For the kids Children can visit the teddy bear clinic for some first aid pointers, the Eye Unit to design a pair of glasses and decorate eye patches, or test their knowledge of body organs by playing a huge version of the game Operation. Health Hub Those who want a mini health check can visit the Health Hub and have their blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and glucose levels checked, as well as having a respiratory test. Tours You can go behind the scenes of our theatres during the day and see where patients go while asleep during operations. New for this year is the chance to book on to our patient journey tours, where small groups will be taken through a planned day case operation patient journey. There will also be opportunities to find out what happens in our Treatment and Investigation Unit (TIU). And more... 2 Message from the Chair Welcome to the summer edition of FT Focus. Having been in post for around three months now, I have seen, first-hand, the hard work and compassion staff show on a daily basis and I am extremely proud to be part of the Trust. The feedback comments on page 6 are just some examples of the gratitude from patients for their recent care. Our Open Day is just around the corner and is shaping up to be a great day with something for everyone. A life-size Operation game and patient journey tours are new for 2017 and are sure to be popular. The Annual Members Meeting will also take place during the day, which offers another chance to hear first-hand about the work of your hospitals, and our governors will be on hand to talk to you. The official opening of Christchurch Hospital took place in June to celebrate the improvements that have taken place. Staff, patients and the local community came together to see the changes themselves and speak to staff about the difference the changes have made. The new purpose built palliative care unit appeal for the Macmillan Unit is also up and running and it s great to see the Macmillan Team, AKA Sisters with Blisters, joining together to help the appeal. Finally I would like to encourage all members to cast their votes in the upcoming governor elections. All votes must be received by 12noon on 22 August 2017 and you can find out more on page 6. David Moss, Chairperson Clinical Services Review consultation The Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has published a report showing the headline responses to the recent public consultation on proposed changes to healthcare in Dorset. The report has been produced by independent analysts Opinion Research Services (ORS) and details over 18,500 responses submitted during the public consultation as part of the Clinical Services Review. The consultation asked for feedback on site specific options for Dorset County, Poole and the Royal Bournemouth hospitals, the configuration of maternity and paediatrics, changes to community services and the redistribution of beds across the county. Between 1 December 2016 and 28 February 2017, 18,713 questionnaires were submitted along with 245 written submissions. In addition, over 1,900 people attended drop-in events, 14 focus groups took place and 1,005 people took part in telephone surveys. Tony Spotswood, RBCH s CEO, said: The Clinical Services Review is an important opportunity for all providers of health services in Dorset to work together to plan for a sustainable future. This would not be possible without public consultation and Opinion Research Services has done a great job in analysing the data which has come from so many responses. While the CCG uses this to inform its final decision later this year, we shall continue to work closely with colleagues across our region in preparing for any potential changes. The summary report of findings is available on the CCG s new pages at: Website: Tel:

3 Celebrating our new-look Christchurch Hospital Local residents joined staff from Christchurch Hospital in June to celebrate the new-look site, a redevelopment they helped make possible by backing the plans with in The celebration marked the official opening of the hospital by The Worshipful the Mayor and Mayoress of Christchurch, Councillor Nick Geary and Mrs Gillian Geary, and gave visitors the opportunity to see the new facilities, including a dedicated outpatient and x-ray department. The afternoon included a barbecue for staff and residents living next to the site, entertainment from staff band On the Nash and Christchurch Rock Choir, as well as informative health talks and tours of hospital departments. The history of Christchurch Hospital stand proved particularly popular, with many locals recognising the varying facades of the building. Palliative care workers take on sporting challenges for new unit A team of over 20 palliative nurses and support workers are taking on sporting challenges to help raise money for a new purpose built palliative care unit. Running, cycling and swimming challenges have been taken on by the close knit team who care for terminally ill patients at the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital and through home visits at patients homes. All the challenges will take place in October and you can support them at www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ MacSistersWithBlisters 3 FT Focus

4 New diabetes support group for young adults truly valuable A social group to help young adults with type 1 diabetes and their families has been set up by the Royal Bournemouth Hospital s Diabetes Department. The group aims to give peer support to those aged between 16 and 20 and to give them the opportunity to draw on other people s experiences and share common issues. If you would like to attend future meetings, please contact Anne Milsom by ing anne.milsom@ rbch.nhs.uk. Gold, silver and bronze for our Catering Team Our talented team of chefs recently took part in the National Hospital Caterers Salon Culinaire and returned with enough metal to fill a trophy cabinet! Markus Pettit, our Kitchen Manager, Head Chef Chris Bacon and our fantastic chefs, Sam Cox, Elaine Wall and Emma Lumber, all entered the competition with pre-prepared plates of food. The plates were presented to three judges. Markus won silver for the main course category, Chris won gold for his fish starter, Elaine won gold for her cake and biscuits and silver for her afternoon tea and Sam won bronze in the poultry main course category. Emma entered into the fish starter category and while she didn t win, she did incredibly well. 5 A day in the life of Chris Bacon, Head Chef at RBH Chris Bacon started his career at the Trust in 1998 as a catering assistant, plating up food, washing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen. Fast forward to the current day and Chris is now a Head Chef, having worked his way up to managing the kitchen and the 28 staff who work in the team. So what is a typical day in Chris shoes like? He starts his day at 8am with a staff level check and kitchen walk round to make sure there are enough of the team to help run the day s service and that everything is where it should be. Throughout the morning preparations take place for lunchtime, with six large lasagnes - each serving 170 patients - being made on this day. At 11.30am the lunchtime belt starts and Chris helps his team fill the 28 food trollies, feeding up to 650 patients each mealtime. In addition, the food for the restaurant and tea bar is set up and served to staff and visitors. The team take their well-earned lunch at 2pm before starting work on the evening meals. The dinner time food belt starts up at 4.15pm where another 650 meals are prepared and hot food is served to staff and visitors in the restaurant. It s Chris job to ensure there is always hot food available in the restaurant between 7.30am and 7.30pm so staff can refuel before returning to care for their patients and visitors can grab a bite to eat before seeing their relatives/friends. Once the trollies are back from the evening run and have been emptied and cleaned, work starts on anything that can be prepared for breakfast. Chris finishes his busy shift at either 4pm or 6pm depending on when he started. WOW! The RBCH Catering Team served 509,839 meals between April March 2017, an increase of almost 47,000 from the previous year. Every year, the team uses: 672kg of pasta 4620kg of Organic flour 38,112 pints of organic milk 8kg of strawberries are prepared and served everyday 5 FT Focus

6 8 Elections - your vote counts A huge 15 out of 18 public governor posts are up for election this summer, with an additional three staff governor posts available too. This is your chance to vote for the candidate you think will best represent your community. All Foundation Trust members are able to vote for their preferred candidates and will be sent voting packs at the beginning of August either by or post. All votes must be received by 12noon on 22 August Annual Members Meeting The Council of Governors would like to invite you to attend the Trust s Annual Members Meeting on Saturday 9 September at 12noon in the Marquee near the Education Centre at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. The meeting will include an address from our Chair David Moss, an overview of the Annual Report, Quality Report and Financial Accounts by our Chief Executive Tony Spotswood and a report from the Council of Governors. Doors open at 11.45am and light refreshments will be provided. If you wish to attend, please ftmembers@rbch.nhs.uk or call Patient feedback A little bird told us... We get lots of feedback about our staff and services, including on Twitter and Facebook. Join the conversation and find out more about what we re up to by on Twitter, or by liking our Facebook page. Online feedback Frankie - massive thanks for looking after my nan. Hopefully she ll be out in a couple of days. She thinks the nurses are wonderful A M Big thankyou to the A&E night staff such lovely staff. We are so lucky to have such a fab service yet more thanks for looking after my partner after his fall. Respect. Time to talk Meeting members of the public, especially when participating in a listening event, is one of the many privileges of being a governor at RBCH. Listening events occur regularly in our hospitals and are publicised in FT Focus and on noticeboards around the hospital. A couple of governors take it in turns to spend a few hours approaching people and asking if they would like to share their hospital experience and we also invite them to become Trust members. To date nobody has refused to speak with me and by the end of my sessions I ve always managed to sign up a few more members, with all the benefits this entails in terms of receiving current information from the hospital. During the events I gain precious insights into how others view the daily running of the hospital, its routines and systems and listen to their fears, frustrations, joys, relief and gratitude. Mainly I just listen, but where appropriate, I am also able to empathise, reassure, answer questions and redirect people. No two listening events are the same, but they are all invaluable.
