2 Research News Updates The Research Development Group on myportfolio This has been created to provide additional information and support for Massey University staff engaging in research-related activities. The Research Development Group provides a one-stop-shop for applicants applying to particular funding rounds where funder application templates and guidelines can be found, along with RMS internal forms and processes, all handily located in the same place. Regular updates will be posted and site visitors are able to ask questions/post feedback online. What is myportfolio? myportfolio is an online portfolio and collaborative environment available to all Massey University staff and students. myportfolio is based on an open source project called Mahara, which started in 2006 as a collaborative venture funded by New Zealand's Tertiary Education Commission's e-learning Collaborative Development Fund. The venture involved Massey University, Auckland University of Technology, The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, and Victoria University of Wellington. Many Massey University staff and students use this environment as a personal learning environment to record and showcase evidence of achievement, manage development plans, set goals, and create online learning communities. The Research Development Advisors have created a number of groups and pages in myportfolio in order to provide enhanced support for the research community at Massey University. How do I access the pages? Currently available are pages for MSI and HRC. MSI: HRC: The links for upcoming funding opportunities will be published in these regular FOPS newsletters, and will also appear under Funding Opportunities on the RMS website. Under this programme AGMARDT provides seed funding for businesses, researchers and industry groups to develop and evaluate innovative ideas to a stage where they can attract other funding for further development through to commercialisation. AGMARDT offers grants of up to $150,000. There is an expectation that the applicant / group will provide funding of at least 40% of the total project costs. This is an indication of commitment to the project. The Trustees reserve the right to allocate a smaller amount than originally requested by the applicant. Grants of up to $20,000 are available to applicants, without co-funding, for preliminary investigation or demonstration purposes Sponsor: The Agricultural and Marketing Research and Development Trust (AGMARDT) RDA contact: Kate Nolan extn Understanding Special Education from the perspectives of Pasifika families 3 rd April, 2012 The Ministry of Education (the Ministry) is seeking proposals to undertake in-depth qualitative interviews in order to better understand Special Education from the perspectives of Pasifika families. The research will identify the strengths of current service provision, as well as areas which could be improved to increase engagement and satisfaction for Pasifika families of young people with Special Education needs. The Ministry is about to publish a document outlining research priorities for Pasifika 1 research in education in Aotearoa New Zealand. One of the priority questions identified in the document is: How can we better understand Special Education from the perspectives of Pasifika families? The research will explore this topic with the goal of improving engagement and satisfaction with Special Education (SE) services for Pasifika young people and their families. Pasifika engagement with Special Education (SE) services is low. Increasing engagement with these services 2, particularly Early Intervention services, is essential for improving outcomes for Pasifika young people with special education needs. SE within the Ministry runs an annual Client Satisfaction Survey to measure satisfaction with services delivered to young people in Aotearoa New Zealand. Response rates from parents of Pasifika children receiving SE services have been low. The proposed research is expected to address this information gap, and inform SE about what works for Pasifika young people and what barriers exist to engagement with these services. 1 Pasifika is a collective term used to refer to people of Pacific heritage or ancestry who have migrated or been born here in Aotearoa New Zealand. Pasifika people have multiple world views with diverse cultural identities (from the Pasifika Education Plan , Ministry of Education, 2008). 2 SE provides a wide range of services to young people in New Zealand; in early childhood, and primary and secondary school settings. These services include speech and language support, severe behaviour support, assistive technologies, etc. For more information about services provided by SE see:

7 Sponsor: Ministry of Education Accounting and Finance Research Grants 20 th April, 2012 The Annual Grants Programme is designed to encourage and support AFAANZ members by providing funding for research projects. The grants are competitive, and are primarily intended to support small-scale projects of up to one year's duration, or to assist in seed funding for larger scale projects. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to conduct the research proposed and show how the project will benefit the research profile of the individual and the discipline. The 2012 round will focus on quality projects that address or respond to contemporary and future challenges to, or have implications for, accounting and finance practice, policy and/or the professions. All applications must be focused on "mentoring of developing researchers," and must involve at least two applicants - the first applicant will be the "developing researcher" while the second applicant will be an "established researcher," taking on the role of research mentor in the context of the grant proposal. A developing researcher is someone who does not have more than two publications in refereed journals (including accepted for publication). All areas of accounting and finance research are encouraged. Grants up to $10,000 ex GST will be considered. Time and resource support will be permitted, including teaching relief. Funds will be available for twelve months after the award of the grant from July 1, 2012, to June 30, 2013, and must be fully expended within that period. Conference attendance will not be funded Applications must clearly indicate if they have been submitted elsewhere for funding. The application must include written support from the Dean/Head of the relevant organisational unit. A maximum of three grants in total per institution are permitted, therefore it is important to contact RMS if you are considering applying. Sponsor: The Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ) Research Fund Animal Welfare Grants 24 th April, 2012 The foundation was established to improve the status of animals worldwide through studies of the science and philosophy of animal welfare and rights and to reduce, through practical efforts and initiatives, the suffering and harm inflicted on animals by human beings. The Grants Committee makes grants to individual scholars pursuing work consistent with the goals of the Trust founders. Organisations may receive funds for capital projects, for general operating expenses, or for specific projects. Doctoral or post-doctoral candidates may receive funds to support a specific research project. Capital and general grants are usually awarded for no more than US$5,000. Specific project awards are usually no more than US$10,000. Sponsor: William and Charlotte Parks Foundation for Animal Welfare, Relation between Education and Social Opportunity 26 th April, 2012 The Spencer Foundation provides funding for research projects that study education in the United States and abroad. The foundation seeks to shed light on the role education plays in reducing economic and social inequalities - as well as, sometimes, reinforcing them - and to find ways to more fully realise education's potential to promote more equal opportunity. Expanded opportunity is important not only to a society's economic well-being but to the character of its civic, cultural, and social life as well. Education enriches and expands people's lives in many ways, including through their employment opportunities, their civic and political involvements, and the quality of their personal lives. The foundation's interests therefore extend to studies that examine the ways in which differences in educational experiences (including quality and character of schooling as well as number of years in school) translate into differences in employment, earnings, and civic and social outcomes. Such work can help identify ways to change schooling investments and outcomes in the interests of a more just and prosperous society.

8 The foundation awards Small Grants of $0-$40,000, and Major Grants of $40,001-$500,000. Investigators of projects with budgets over $40,000 may submit a preliminary proposal at any time. Sponsor: Spencer Foundation Awards in Oral History 26 th May, 2012 These awards provide financial help for the recording of interviews relating to the history of New Zealand/Aotearoa and its close connections with the Pacific. Projects submitted for consideration should contribute significantly to an understanding of New Zealand's past and its people. Preference will be given to oral historians with proven experience of successfully completing oral history projects or who have completed training in oral history. Awards are given as a contribution towards the recording of interviews for oral history projects. This can include money for training, travel and other expenses and buying good quality recording equipment. If the project is not completed at the end of one year, the remainder of the grant will be forfeited and the money will return to the Oral History Trust Fund - unless prior approval has been granted for an extended deadline. Valued at up to US$32,500, plus travel. Sponsor: Fulbright New Zealand Special Programme on Security, Society, and the State 20 th July, 2012 Is the nation state losing its significance? "Failing states" as safe havens for terrorists and an increase in transnational organised crime in conflict regions seem to indicate this. Yet the multi-layered nature of security problems is also leading to an increase in the importance of the state in some areas. This special programme "Security, Society, and the State," addresses these contradictory developments. Proposals are invited for existing research projects. The Foundation generally only accepts applications for research project grants from postdoctoral scholars. The applicants must be actively involved in the research work of the project. Experienced researchers have the opportunity to work intensively on a particular research aspect for a limited period of time and encourage younger scholars to address unconventional yet central questions. The programme is aimed at humanities scholars and social scientists from all disciplines. Types of funding mainly include grants for research projects, but also conferences and workshops. Doctoral fellowships are granted only if connected to a research project. Research projects should be closely related to one or more of the five fields of research. The Gerda Henkel Foundation supports research projects under the following five headings: 1. Cyber Security as a Governmental Task 2. Public Administration and Human Security 3. Patterns of Conflict Resolution between the State and Traditional Actors 4. Non-Governmental Actors as Partners and Contenders of the State 5. Security Strategies between Doctrine Formation and Implementation The grants for research projects involve, depending on the type of project, research and PhD fellowships for project participants, travel and material expenses as well as academic conferences and workshops. The costs incurred by visiting (foreign) scholars can also be financed as part of a research project. The payment of fellowships is based on Gerda Henkel Foundation's usual rates. The Foundation provides up to annually for the "Security, Society, and the State" programme. The maximum amount of funding is per project application. Sponsor: Gerda Henkel Foundation NZJEP (New Zealand Japan Exchange Programme) 28 th July, 2012 This is a grants programme funded by the New Zealand Government with the aim of deepening understanding between New Zealand and Japan on a broad educational and cultural basis.
