10 Local Manufacturers Nominated for State-wide Award M anufacturing Appreciation Week (MAW) was developed by the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) and the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEC). Manufacturing Appreciation Week will be celebrated April 18-22, The Awards Luncheon will be held April 21st at the Georgia International Convention Center where awards winners will be announced for three categories: Small Manufacturer (1-150 employees), Medium Manufacturer ( ), and Large Manufacturer (500+ employees) of the Year. Each year, individual colleges within the TCSG are asked to nominate local manufacturers they feel have met the criteria set forth by the state-wide committee. To be considered, a company must have demonstrated corporate responsibility through initiatives such as: company-sponsored community involvement efforts, civic involvement, educational partnerships, and corporate citizenship honors from industry, government, or community groups. Additionally, they should have also demonstrated economic growth through their years in the community and economic impact related to revenues, capital investments, growth of new jobs, or other impact. Finally, businesses should make evident a commitment to workforce excellence through programs which help employees balance work and family life issues, employee education programs, diversity awareness, and employee recognition / awards programs. This year s local nominees are: American Textile Company American Textile Company (ATC) opened its 218,000 square foot, GA manufacturing and distribution operation in In August 2014, the company expanded significantly, building a second facility that doubled its square footage in the region. These two state-of-theart facilities are engaged in three critical activities for the company: producing millions of bed pillows annually; warehousing the entire line of mattress and pillow encasements, sheets, comforters, blankets, and mattress pads; and housing a new, fully-automated pick and pack facility built in 2016 that services the company s direct-to-consumer ecommerce business. In building and bringing the operation online, ATC s capital investment for plant and equipment is in excess of $10 million. ATC s economic impact of its existing facility on the region is significant. With 248 employees and a payroll of over $5 million, the impact on local merchants, service providers, and other business approaches $50 million per annum. With the 2014 expansion and significant further growth expected, ATC views, GA as a long term partner in growth. Cives Steel Founded in 1981, Cives (si-vay) Steel has grown from a small, local fabrication company to where they are today: generating annual sales of $40 million on a variety of large-scale, construction projects throughout the United States and employing 145 full-time, fully-benefitted workers. Because the company is able to perform the majority of fabrication on these out-of-state projects in, they bring revenue that might otherwise go to other states into Thomas County. Cives has an annual local payroll of approximately $5.5 million dollars that is pumped directly into the Southwest Georgia economy and draws employees from any surrounding counties. All Cives jobs are full-time, fully benefitted professional and skilled positions that demand higher wages. Cives buys as many materials, supplies, and consumables locally, when possible. Raw material is often purchased from, consumables from, and supplies from several surrounding areas. In the past several years Cives has expanded their workforce by increasing production shop personnel by approximately 15.6% over the past three years and administrative support staff by 6.6% during the same period. Stable employment is a hallmark of Cives company culture. They have been able to control their workforce to sustainable levels while working within a highly turbulent, cyclical construction industry. A testament to their stability, Cives has been able to withstand the Great Recession and collapse of the housing market without having to lay off a single

11 employee. Flowers Baking Company Flowers Baking Company, headquartered in, Ga. since its first bakery was opened by the Flowers family in 1919, is today one of the largest producers of packaged bakery foods in the United States generating $3.8 billion in sales in fiscal year The company maintains some of the most efficient and technologically advanced bakeries in the country and has a team of outstanding employees and associates. Each bakery operates as a separate subsidiary of the company and has its own president, human resources director, and controller Fresh breads, buns, rolls, snack cakes, and tortillas are available to approximately 80% of the U.S. population through the company s directstory delivery (DSD) network. This network covers the Northeast, South, southern Midwest, Southwest, and California. Independent distributor partners are in supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurants delivering and merchandising these fresh bakery foods every day. The company operates more than 40 highly efficient bakeries that produce a wide range of bakery food for retail and foodservice customers in the U.S. The facilities proves employment opportunities for over 485 people and generates more than $18 million in annual payroll. Graco Fertilizer Company Founded in a 1954 partnership between H.T. LeGette and Robert Johnson, Graco Fertilizer was predominately a fertilizer manufacturer and cotton gin. Today, Graco has evolved into a leader in the production of specialty fertilizer and potting soil because of the vision of Tom LeGette, who became president of the company in As the horticultural and turf industry grew, so did Graco, with an emphasis on specialty fertilizers and custom potting soil. In the early eighties, a new generation of LeGettes joined the family business. Today, Ken and Bob LeGette carry on the vision of their father and grandfathers. Based in Cairo, Georgia for the past 31 years, Graco is a privately owned corporation whose production facilities are located in Cairo and Grady County with distribution centers in Plant City, Florida and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The employs 42 individuals on a full-time basis and is a regular contributor to the communities they serve. Lauri Jo s Southern Style Canning In the summer of 2009, Lauri Jo Bennett began researching what it would take to begin to produce and sell three products she had become well-known for producing locally: salsa, pepper jelly, and green tomato pickles. She started at the local Extension Office where she found the guidance she needed to help turn a hobby into a thriving business. When the business started in 2009, Lauri Jo s utilized the services of a co-packer. In January of 2010, Lauri Jo s held a ribbon cutting on their first facility, and in May of 2010, she brought all production in house. In January 2011, Lauri Jo s became a licensed co-packer facility listed with the University of Georgia. In October of 2011, the company opened a new 4000 square foot production facility with a retail front, and in 2012, they became an official agritourism destination. In 2014, Lauri Jo s added 8 new products and began offering Zeigler s Honey (Stockton, GA) under the Lauri Jo label for a total of 17 new products. They added three new team members that year. Also in 2014, Lauri Jo s pickle line went nation-wide with Fresh Market Grocery and the company added 150 Kroger stores with the full line. Lauri Jo s products are sold in Kroger Stores, Sprouts Farmer s Markets, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Earth Fare, and Harvey s along with many specialty retail and gift shops across the country. Lauri Jo s is proud to be a provider of Georgia products to US Naval Bases around the world and has six products featured in use at the Food Network Café in Concourse D at Hartsfield- Jackson International Airport. The company added eight new products in 2015 and is now selling southern favorites in 41 states and counting. Lauri Jo and husband, Mike personally oversees all aspects production from selecting choice, local produce to final processing and shipping. National Beef - National Beef has grown from a single beef plant in 1992 to the fourth largest beef processor in the U.S. Our goal is to ensure that our customers have the tools they need to drive their own growth in the marketplace. We are a leading beef processor dedicated to providing fresh, chilled and further processed beef and beef by-products for our customers. Our focus is to expand our branded boxed beef, case ready beef, portion control beef and wet blue leather businesses to continue to meet and exceed the growing needs of our customers. Since its inception in 2002, the plant in has grown to an annual payroll of just under $10 million and employs 295 individuals. The plant is a major employer in Colquitt County and rural Southwest Georgia with local sales and property taxes paid by the plant providing a tremendous boost to city and county governments and the local school system. Phoenix Wood Products Since their origin in 1992, Phoenix Wood Products has emerged as one of the largest new pallet and crate manufacturers in all of the Southeastern United States. Our senior management team has more than 70 years of combined industry experience catapulting us to the top of our industry. When the Phoenix facility opened in Ashburn, GA 14 years ago they had 8 employees. Today, they have 91 full-time personnel and in 2015 invested over $600,000 into their facility on Interstate 75 for capital expansions. Phoenix Wood Products has participated in a voluntary OSHA Safety Consultation Program called SHARP (Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program). This program is offered through the University of South Florida and Georgia Tech. The Ocala, FL facility became SHARP certified in August of 2006 and the Ashburn, GA facility qualified for SHARP certification in June 2007.
