The San Francisco Conservation Corps motivates and connects youth with inspiring work, quality education, and a better future. Annual Report
DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS, Looking back on this past year, there were so many moments that served as vivid reminders of the important challenges our young people are up against, as well as the work that the San Francisco Conservation Corps does with our community partners to change Corpsmembers lives. It s hard to believe that it s been 35 years that the San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) has been serving the disconnected and at-risk youth in our community. Founded in a moment of inspiration as the first urban youth corps in the nation by then-mayor Dianne Feinstein and the Honorable Justice J. Anthony Kline, SFCC continues to pave the way as one of the most impactful programs in San Francisco. For 35 years, SFCC has created intimate moments of change for young adults through paid job training, high school diploma attainment, career development, and comprehensive case management. Our services ensure that transitional age youth gain the knowledge and skills necessary to secure employment and exit poverty. SFCC s program emphasizes developing the essential foundational skills needed to become jobready, self-sufficient and productive young adults. The San Francisco Conservation Corps motivates and connects youth with inspiring work, quality education, and a better future. Our job-skills and career readiness training program prepares young adults to enter the 21st century labor force and ensures the prosperity of not just themselves but of our community. I know you will be as inspired as I am with both the successes of SFCC s participants and its impact as an organization. Please remember that without you, neither would be possible. Greenest regards, Debra Gore-Mann Executive Director
OUR PROGRAM The San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) has facilitated economic independence and strengthened families. Our model, with its strong emphasis on academic support, case management, barrier removal, and comprehensive career services, addresses the multiple challenges disconnected youth face, and provides the individualized support necessary to accomplish their goals. SFCC creates jobs and accelerates training opportunities to move Corpsmembers into living wage jobs with opportunities for advancement, collaborating with a wide-range of partners, secondary education institutions, training programs, and municipal programs to provide employment placement connections that enable our young adults to achieve their academic and career goals.
THE STRENGTH OF OUR PROGRAM IS EMPHASIZED FROM A COMPREHENSIVE STRATEGY THAT INCLUDES: EDUCATION Our on-site John Muir Charter School is a fully accredited California high school, providing daily classes designed for young adults who have had a tough time succeeding in traditional public high schools. Highly-skilled, energetic teachers work closely with each student, linking academics to work experience, and motivating students to earn their high school diplomas. PAID WORK OPPORTUNITIES SFCC offers paid work opportunities so that Corpsmembers can earn while they learn. We work with various agencies in San Francisco (Port of San Francisco, Department of Public Works, SF Environment, Public Utilities Commission, etc.) to provide paid job training and the opportunity for Corpsmembers to acquire and practice essential job preparation skills. CASE MANAGEMENT Case Management is designed to increase retention and to assist Corpsmembers with obtaining employment. Case Managers conduct barrier removal assessments, provide one-on-one case conferencing, develop barrier removal plans, and work with other Community-Based Organizations and City agencies to make referrals for resources for Corpsmembers. CAREER DEVELOPMENT Career Development staff creates individual career plans with all participants based on their vocational assessments and aptitudes, and develops tangible goals to enter into employment or other accredited vocational training programs. Corpsmembers can work with the Career Development Manager to complete the Job Portfolio or develop applications for enrollment into post-secondary education or advanced training programs upon graduation.
SFCC gives young adults the opportunity to make their lives better and to reach their goals. I am more responsible now than I was before and, for the first time, I m thinking where I want to go in life. Lena Im Corpsmember Alumnus
RECYCLING PROJECTS The San Francisco Conservation Corps partners with volunteers, public agencies and other non-profits to achieve our goals of resource conservation, improved environmental sustainability, and advocacy. SFCC transitioned a special events recycling project into a thriving social enterprise. Our zero waste events team offers recycling services for businesses and small or large public events throughout San Francisco. In just the past 12 months, Corpsmembers have: - WORKED 562 EVENT DAYS ACROSS SAN FRANCISCO - RECYCLED 212 TONS OF BEVERAGE CONTAINERS AND 1,127 TONS OF COMPOST - ACHIEVED AN AVERAGE LANDFILL DIVERSION RATE OF 83% - OUTREACHED TO AND EDUCATED 1.28 MILLION EVENT ATTENDEES Corpsmembers on recycling crews work with their supervisors to run most aspects of our recycling business, learning valuable work skills and conservation techniques while they are on the job. They collect recycling on routes throughout the city, sort recyclables, drop off and sell recyclables, and educate San Francisco businesses, non-profits and special event producers and attendees about best recycling practices. We are proud to be an integral part of San Francisco s zero waste effort. Our recycling crews participate in innovative recycling programs through partnerships with public agencies, local organizations, and private companies. Essentially, SFCC provides services that assist in reducing the waste going to our landfills, improve the environment, and beautify our communities. 6
