With this growth comes a unique set of needs and concerns, challenges and opportunities. The CBICC s Business and Industry Partnership was formed specifically to help address business needs, be it facility, workforce, regulatory or other. In the following pages, you ll learn more about the CBICC s business retention efforts. In addition, you ll find information about other aspects of the Chamber s three-pronged economic development mission, carried out in partnership with Centre County Economic Development Partnership stakeholders public and private entities that support efforts to strengthen the local economy. 3 Ground broken for new economic development project at Innovation Park On Friday, June 9, ground was broken at Innovation Park for a new building that will house UK-based Morgan Advanced Materials new Carbon Science Center of Excellence (COE). The facility will be the company s first CEO in North America. The project is Penn State University s first global partnership under Invent Penn State. It is also an example of the university and community working collectively and collaboratively to strengthen the local economy. The CBICC, on behalf of its Centre County Economic Development Partnership stakeholders, represented the community throughout discussions with Penn State University and Morgan Advanced Materials. At the time of the project announcement last July, Morgan officials said support from the university, the state and the CBICC, on behalf of its Centre County Economic Development Partnership stakeholders, was vital in making the center a reality. Morgan s investment here will result in between 20 and 25 full-time, wide-ranging and highquality research and laboratory technician jobs. It will also pay off in the way of homes purchased and intellectual property developed, not to mention the potential for future investment in Centre County. In fact, the company is already in dialogue with other companies to join them in the 27,500-square-foot building. CBICC President and CEO Vern Squier addresses the audience at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Carbon Science Center of Excellence. Proactive work to grow and bring balance to the local economy through recruitment; taking care of our own; or entrepreneurial support is paying off. The dedication to partnership in the local community is critical to these efforts moving forward. To that end, the CBICC wishes to thank Centre County; State College Borough; College Township; Ferguson Township; Patton Township; Spring Township; Half Moon Township and Bellefonte Borough for their commitment to this project and economic development efforts that ultimately benefit the entire county. The building is expected to be completed by December. The CBICC and Centre County Economic Development Partnership stakeholders celebrate progress on the Carbon Science Center of Excellence project. 6 IN Brief Economic Development CBICC joins state DCED at MedTech industry event CBICC Vice President of Economic Development Jennifer Myers recently represented Centre County at MD&M East, the world s largest MedTech event on the East Coast. This conference was an opportunity to connect with engineers and executives, as well as hundreds of leading medical device and related suppliers.
