The committee is tentatively planning a dedication or grand opening celebration during Riverfest and the "Simply the Best"... Dam River September Park Beautification Clean-Up Plan: The Parks and Recreation Department will continue to work with Wartburg students on various park clean-up projects. Mural Project: Sub-committee continues to meet to develop plans for murals to be completed in Information will be presented to property owners and prospective sponsors. Art in the Park: The committee purchased a sculpture titled "American Graffiti" from Jerry Cowger to place permanently in Kohlmann Park. The sculpture arrived May 9. Thanks to sub-committee members Art Simpson, Tab Ray, Lynn Montague and Larry Kurtz for their hard work on the project. The plaque and lighting will be installed soon. A separate sub-committee is also researching additional public art projects. Engelbrecht Center (Santa's House): The building is in need of repair. The committee budgeted for minor improvements. Volunteers will complete the work this fall/summer. Facade Grant: The committee will offer a $500 grant for facade improvements. Details will be finalized and applications will be distributed. Downtown Trash Receptacles: Committee discussed ideas for the design of downtown trash receptacles. Downtown Tree Grates: Thanks to the Boy Scouts for completing the maintenance on the West Bremer Avenue tree grates. Waverly Post Office Beautification Project: The committee is researching opportunities to assist with facade and landscaping enhancements at the Waverly Post Office. Committee members also continue to talk with current downtown businesses about expanding. Committee makes recruitment visits the 4 th Tuesday of alternating months. Market Analysis for Main Street Training Series: After the initial Market Analysis ICN training May 2, the committee determined that it would be best for WADG staff and volunteers to complete the Market Analysis process in Staff and volunteers will attend the upcoming ICN trainings to gather information about the process, but the assignments will not be completed this year. Iowa Downtown Summit: The Summit is scheduled for August 23 and 24 in Clinton, Iowa. Representatives from designated Main Street Iowa communities are required to attend. The summit, sponsored by the Iowa Department of Economic Development and the Federal Home Loan Bank, offers interesting and informative presentations by nationally-recognized experts and local practitioners about rural and urban communities' efforts in revitalizing their city centers. Big Blue Project: Sub-committee will develop conceptual plans/ideas and meet with developers and prospects. Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA): The application was just released by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Golfwaverly,c9m: The committee purchased three additional ads that were placed in the Davenport/Quad City Times, the Dubuque Telegraph Herald and the Rochester Post-Bulletin. Staff has received several calls regarding the ads, Tourism: Monthly meeting continue to be held at the Waverly Area Development Group Office. Staff continues to encourage new ideas. 4 Committee Assistance: Design and layout work is being done for the Investor Directory that will be distributed through the Insider in October. Weekly Coffee: "Coffee and Conversation" continues every Tuesday, 9:30 to 10 a.m., at the Waverly Home Bakery. Waverly Coupon Book: Waverly Area Development Group investors had the opportunity to advertise in a new coupon book. Each coupon costs $200. The 10,000 coupon books will be distributed in goodie bags and to the community throughout the year. Customer Appreciation Month: Scheduled for the month of September. Plans are underway to develop a campaign similar to the "Backstage Pass" Promotion used during the Sidewalk Project. Customers would receive an entry form with each purchase at participating businesses. We would then draw a winner every day from the slips returned to the two designated locations. Holiday Open House: Surveys were sent to retail businesses requesting input about the date for the Holiday Open House. It was determined that the Open House will be Sunday, December 4, 12 to 4 p.m. (This is a change from past years.) Riverfest Special Promotions; The committee discussed promotional ideas to organize for Riverfest Saturday, September 17. Todate, 204 Businesses have invested (and 35 past business investors increased contributions). Thirty-nine businesses have also invested for the first time this year. Eight new members joined after being contacted during the Investment Blitz. Project: LEAD: The program will begin in September. The class will be held one Thursday night each month thru May. Fourteen participants have already committed. Seminar Opportunities: Waverly Area Development Group will host speaker Margie Johnson September 21. Because of Waverly's status as an Iowa Main Street Community, the program will only be charged $500 for the program rather than $3250. Ambassador Visits: July Ambassador visits included: Volunteer Center of Greater Waverly, Janet Ladage New Volunteer Center Coordinator (Progress Award); Serenity Massages, Dawn Sieck (New Business); Casey's General Store, Brenda Hulbert New Manager (Progress Award); Network Control, New Location (Progress Award); Gym 24 (New Business); and Waverly Bowl Inn, Keith and Mary-Anna Denton New Managers (Progress Award). Business Investor Directory: The Waverly Area Development Group Board approved plans to partner with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier to produce and distribute a Business Investor Directory (alphabetical and categorical) to 16,000 households at the end of October. Only Business Investors will be listed in the directory. There will be no cost to Waverly Area Development Group. Business Investors will have the opportunity to purchase advertisements, but will not be required to purchase advertising in order to be listed. Santa's Arrival: Santa will arrive this year on Saturday, December 3. Several fun activities for kids are being planned for that afternoon as well. Christmas Greetings on Main: Work has begun for the 2005 event. Several new ideas are being looked at to add to the success of the past years. Christmas Greetings on Main 2005 will be held on Thursday, December :11 AM 09/19/05
5 Christmas in Kohlmann: Plans are underway for a new event that will be held on Thursday, December 15 in Kohlmann Park. This event will combine two events ("Simply the Best" Stocking Suffer Extravaganza and "Simply the Best" Caroling Contest) that were created in Children will be able to collect goodies throughout Kohlmann Park in their stockings and visit Santa at his house. Parents will be able to enjoy the caroling contest. Winter games, an ice sculptor and various other activities will also be held in the park. Committee shared the film "Waverly A Legacy of Giving" at the Palace Theatre on August 11 th during the "Great Places" initiative. Committee sponsored the July 7 th Courtyard Bash distributing WQOLF brochures along with lemonade and pop corn. The Bremer County Foundation was organized on March 31 st. and will receive the State of Iowa non-gaming county revenue of an estimated $55,000.
