1 Awagami AIR - Artist in Residence Conditions In carrying out this program, host and artists are bound by a contract that includes the following terms: 1. Items relating to arrival (1) Support for Travel Expenses The host will provide support for the artists travel expenses. -Artists based outside Japan: maximum of 150,000 yen -Artists based in Japan: maximum of 60,000 yen Actual cost of one round trip from the station/airport closest to the artists residence to JR Awa Yamakawa Station and back will be supported. (Cost of going home and returning during the residence will not be supported) Taxi fare is not eligible for support. (Staff will drive artists between Yamakawa Station and Awagami) Any costs exceeding the maximum allowance will be borne by the artist. Any portion of the trip for which there is no receipt will not be eligible for reimbursement. Foreign exchange rate will be calculated based on the rate on the day the ticket was purchased, as indicated on the receipt. Cash payment (in Yen) will be made upon arrival. 2 Items relating to the residency (For details, see the attached AIR Guidelines ) (1) Daily Expenses The host will pay the artists a 5,000 Yen a day per-diem for daily expenses during the residency. Absences due to participation in events not related to the program, domestic travel hotels, and unrelated trips will not be eligible for a per diem. Daily per-diem expenses will be paid in installments (in Japanese yen) While the host will pay for an insurance contract covering injury for the artists during the residency, artists are requested to purchase health, etc. insurance. (2) Housing The host will rent accommodation to the artists for the duration of the program at a house or facility near Awagami at a daily rate. (On days when artist is away, the room may still be used to store their luggage, so an accommodation fee will be collected.)

2 House Apartment Location 109 Tateishi, Yudate, Rent (per day) 900 yen 900 yen *Awagami Factory will decide which house will be used by which artist(s). Accommodation fee includes all utilities. Please pay the accommodation fee at the end of the residency period (Japanese yen/one cash payment) Please understand the accommodation may be shared (bathroom and kitchen). Artists are responsible for cleaning their room, bathroom and kitchen after use. Accommodation must be returned to its original state following the residency. Third party guests are not allowed to stay overnight at the accommodation or workspaces without prior permission. Artists may choose to find their own alternative accommodations, however any contracts, research and travel expenses incurred are the sole responsibility of the artist. (3) Internet The following 2 facilities below offer free Wi-Fi. There is currently no wifi available at the accommodations or the workspaces. There is free wifi at Awagami Factory and the Amenity Center. Awagami Factory Amenity Center Location 141 Kawahigashi, 95-1 Okidai, Open Hours 9:00-17:00 (closed on Mondays) 9:00-21:30 (closed on Wednesdays) 3. Art Production and Display The artist is required to make art, submit pieces for an exhibition and participate in exchange programs (see attached) during the residency. (1) Production Expenses The host will provide a maximum of 30,000 yen to pay for production expenses (research, materials, exhibition installation & removal, etc.) deemed necessary by the host.

3 Washi and washi fibers required for artist production will be provided at no cost. However, the artist must consult with the host regarding the work so as to determine approximate washi / fiber needs. (2) Workspaces (for details, see the AIR Guidelines) Limited to the program period, the following facilities will be rented out to artists at the nominal costs listed below. Workspaces are all shared. There are no private rooms. Please pay the cost of using the facilities at the end of the residency (Japanese yen/one cash payment) Permission for use of the workspaces outside of open hours will be determined on a case-by-case basis. The exhibition shall run for 5-7 days following the residency As a general rule, the exhibition will be a solo show and the mounting of artworks shall be done by the artists themselves. Following of the exhibition, artworks must be removed by the artists themselves A subsidy of up to 20,000 yen will be provided to cover the cost of mailing artworks back home (actual cost).

4 (4) Record of Activities The artists must submit a personal profile and a report of their activities during the residence. The report should be two A4 pages, and include the content listed above. (After this year s program end, the host will make an AIR Program Report of which 20 copies of will be provided to each artist. Data must be submitted to the AIR office within 20 days of the end of the program. If the artist fails to submit a report, the host will request that all expenses paid out during the residency be paid back. 4. Items related to Exchange Programs The artist must participate in the following programs. The host will provide all necessary materials and bear all expenses relating to the listed programs. 1. Welcome Party A welcome party will be held over dinner. Artist should prepare a three-minute self-introduction speech. 2. Courtesy Visit A visit to Hall and Kamojima Rotary Club to report on artists arrival and planned activities. Please prepare to give a three-minute self-introduction and speech. 3. Artist Lecture Allotted Time: 40 minutes per artist Target: Members of International Exchange Association Content: Personal profile and activity history, plans for work during the residency. A projector will be available to use 4. Outreach Allotted Time: 9:30 10:15 (45 minutes) Target: Kawata Elementary School students aged 9-12 *Artists will either teach A Class (20 students, grades 3-4) or B Class (20 students, grades 5-6) Content: Craft, art or sculpture using washi - help local children understand the fun and wonder of art. (Host will provide all necessary washi and related materials) 5. Open Atelier Open workspace to the public Be present during the time, and explain work to visitors Target: Local residents, general participants 6. Exhibition see 3.3 for reference

5 7. Artist Talk Allotted Time: 40 min Target: About 20 local residents, general participants Content: Artist s profile and work history, works made, future plans, etc... A projector is available. 8. Farewell Party A farewell party will be held over dinner. Prepare a three-minute speech. 5. Other (1) Copyright Copyrights for works created during this program shall reside with the artist, but the host will reserve the right to use photos and video, etc. for documentation purposes and publicity. Additionally, the host and people who have gained the permission of the host will be able to use these without compensation. (2) Cooperation with the Press The artist will cooperate as much as possible with requests for interviews from the press, including press conferences arranged by the host. However, if it seems that press coverage will interfere with the artist's work or privacy, the artist will be able to ask the host to turn down interview requests. (3) Support System In the Supporter Center will be office staff and volunteers who will be available during the residency to help with production, translation and everyday life needs. The type of support available will be discussed with the host when necessary. Note: If an artist from a country that does not have a tax treaty with Japan, the production costs and living expenses will have 20% deducted for income tax. Thank you for understanding.
