3 POWER reframed! November 8, 2017 Dear Friends, We need to talk about power. As philanthropists, power can sometimes be uncomfortable to talk about explicitly. There s no question that collectively, the attendees of today s event are a powerful and influential group of individuals and institutions. At the same time, it s clear that the traditional narratives of power in our society are changing. New grassroots movements are driving change and shifting how we think about power what it is, how it operates, and why some have more of it than others. This moment in our history poses both a challenge and an opportunity to philanthropy. Funders are uniquely positioned to use both their financial resources, as well as their voice and influence, to support movements for justice and equity and to disrupt the established systems of power that perpetuate inequity. Reframing how we think about power is the first step in this work. We hope you leave here with new ideas about philanthropy s role your role in building citizen power to advance social change. Tamara Lucas Copeland President, Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers Lynn Tadlock Chair, WRAG Board of Directors Deputy Executive Director of Giving Claude Moore Charitable Foundation

7 TO OUR ARTISTS LIFE PIECES TO MASTERPIECES Our purpose is to provide opportunities to African American males ages 3 25 to discover and activate their innate creative abilities to change challenges into possibilities. Our programs provide critical out-of-school time for apprentices to engage in the arts, develop resiliency, as well as to practice key academic components. Our Saturday Academy provides college and career readiness training, as well as black male development, to high school apprentices who are preparing for post-secondary success. Our Education Architects program provides a path towards a post-secondary tract, including certificate programs, career programs or entry into a 2- or 4-year college program. TARATIBU YOUTH ASSOCIATION Taratibu Youth Association is a performing arts company that focuses on African and African American culture. Taratibu ( slow and orderly in Ki-Swahili) is a Pan- African drill fused with contemporary and military movement along with African dance. TYA also uses traditional and contemporary songs to teach principles of community building, self-determination, and spirituality. Over our 10-year span, TYA has traveled to Ghana, Togo, Benin, South Africa, Haiti, St. Croix, and Senegal to expose youth to their culture and provide global awareness. TYA is based in Mount Rainier, MD with members ranging from years old. WILFREDO VALLADARES Born in Trujillo Colon, Honduras, Wilfredo is an artist and educator. It was due to his challenging of perceptions as a teacher during a time of conflict that it became necessary for Wilfredo to seek political asylum in the U.S. Wilfredo arrived in the early 1990s, and continued his journey as an artist by attending Montgomery College, then Maryland Institute College of Art, earning a BFA in sculpture, then an MFA in sculpture at the University of Maryland. He has been part of numerous artistic and educational events, such as group shows, solo exhibits, workshops, and environmental installations. In 1997, Wilfredo had his first international sculpture show in Milan, Italy. Wilfredo s work is designed to cross boundaries and to move beyond the traditional paradigm of cross-cultural art.

8 Richard Rothstein Research Associate, Economic Policy Institute Richard Rothstein is a research associate of the Economic Policy Institute and a fellow at the Thurgood Marshall Institute of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and of the Haas Institute at the University of California (Berkeley). He is the author of The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America. The book recovers a forgotten history of how federal, state, and local policy explicitly segregated metropolitan areas nationwide, creating racially homogenous neighborhoods in patterns that violate the Constitution and require remediation. He is also the author of Grading Education: Getting Accountability Right (2008); Class and Schools: Using Social, Economic and Educational Reform to Close the Black- White Achievement Gap (2004); and The Way We Were? Myths and Realities of America s Student Achievement (1998). Other recent books include The Charter School Dust-Up: Examining the Evidence on Enrollment and Achievement (co-authored in 2005), and All Else Equal: Are Public and Private Schools Different? (co-authored in 2003).

9 Eric Liu CEO, Citizen Eric Liu is an author, educator, and civic entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of Citizen University, which promotes and teaches the art of powerful citizenship through a portfolio of national programs (citizenuniversity.us), and the executive director of the Aspen Institute Citizenship and American Identity Program. His books include the national bestsellers The Gardens of Democracy, and The True Patriot, co-authored with Nick Hanauer. Eric s most recent book is You re More Powerful Than You Think: A Citizen s Guide to Making Change Happen. His first book, The Accidental Asian: Notes of a Native Speaker, was a New York Times Notable Book featured in the PBS documentary Matters of Race. Eric served as a White House speechwriter for President Bill Clinton and later as the President s deputy domestic policy adviser. After the White House, he was an executive at the digital media company RealNetworks. Eric lives in Seattle, where he teaches civic leadership at the University of Washington, hosts the award-winning Citizen University TV, and is a regular columnist for CNN.com and a correspondent for TheAtlantic.com. In addition to speaking regularly at venues across the country, Eric is the co-founder of the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility and a board member of the Corporation for National and Community Service and other nonprofit and civic boards.
