3 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement Seeking to put God s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, community and hope. Background Statement Lexington Habitat s mission to provide affordable housing differs from other housing organizations in that it s a homeownership program. At the conclusion of a Lexington Habitat home build, families own an affordable home. Lexington Habitat is a hand up, not a hand out and families are partners in the process from the moment they enter the program. They perform sweat equity volunteer hours building their own home. This partnership continues even after families close on their homes, as their affordable 0% interest monthly mortgage payments are used by the affiliate to fund home builds in subsequent years. Lexington Habitat builds homes per year in Lexington, and since 1986 has helped over 425 low-income families achieve homeownership. By adding to the base of homeowners in the Lexington community, Lexington Habitat s work additionally benefits the wider community significantly by improving whole neighborhoods, replacing vacant eye-sore lots with decent homes, removing vacant, dilapidated, and dangerous structures, and adding to the property tax base in the city. Lexington Habitat accomplishes its mission because of the generosity of a multitude of groups including leading businesses, churches, a wide variety of individuals, and assorted grant funders who share the belief in the need for affordable housing. Additionally, Lexington Habitat relies on scores of volunteers contributing tens of thousands of hours of volunteer labor in service to Lexington Habitat and its partner families. Also unique to Lexington Habitat is the ReStore located at 451 Southland Drive. The store is open to the public selling donated new or gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories and building supplies. Donations may be dropped off or a pick-up service is available. Additionally, the ReStore diverts reusable materials out of Lexington s waste stream. Impact Statement We are grateful for the many accomplishments that our organization achieved in 2016 because of the dedicated staff, partner families, volunteers, Board, and the generosity of our financial supporters. However, some of the most notable are the following: To date, we have built over 425 homes with low-income families in Lexington. For every home built in Lexington, we tithe funds to build a home internationally. In 2016, 11 families achieved homeownership. In 2016, 10 homes were built using energy-efficient techniques. In 2015, we implemented the Love Your Neighborhood program which focuses on neighborhood revitalization through home preservation, critical home repair and neighborhood clean up projects. In 2013 we completed our first Owner Occupied home renovation project. It was sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Lexington's Remodelers Council. In 2017 we will continue work on improving our infrastructure and efficiency, with particular attention to family recruitment, fundraising and volunteer recruitment and a streamlined build calendar. 3

4 Needs Statement 1. Financial Donations (donations may be made in honor or memory of someone and may be designated for specific projects). 2.In-Kind Donations ( HVAC, Electric, Roofing, Drywall, Flooring) If your company is interested in donating any of these services please call Lexington Habitat's Construction Director at x Tools (Lexington Habitat has a wide variety of tool needs such as paint brushes, cordless drills, hammers, etc.) 4. Home Sponsorships (A full home sponsorship for a Lexington Habitat home is $60,000 and may be divided among many businesses and/or individuals) 5. Volunteers are needed to assist with build site construction, office tasks, graphic design, photography, special events, working at the ReStore, etc. 6. Build-able Property located in Fayette County. CEO/Executive Director Statement Together... building a better tomorrow that is our theme at Lexington Habitat for Humanity. We bring together community partners to help build a better tomorrow for families in need of simple, decent, affordable housing; for streets and neighborhoods in need of transformation; and for individuals and organizations who are looking for ways to serve others in this community and around the world. Families Our families are hardworking folks whose incomes fall below 60% of area median income. Families do not qualify for traditional mortgages. We offer them the opportunity to build the home they will purchase alongside donors and volunteers. Families must first undergo financial screening, home visits, and approval by our Board of Directors. Once in the program, the families participate in hours of homeownership training and education. Families must also commit to serving hours of sweat equity! We have served over 425 families in Lexington. As part of our partnership with Habitat International, we send tithe funds for each house we build. Our tithe funds currently go to Malawi Habitat for Humanity, the Orphans and Vulnerable Groups fund and the Global Mission Fund. In 2014 we achieved a huge milestone - tithing over $1 million dollars. Because of the compassion and dedication of this community, more nearly 700 families worldwide now live in simple, decent, affordable housing. Streets and Neighborhoods Lexington Habitat has traditionally built on in-fill lots in downtown Lexington (east and west ends), the Georgetown street area and in Winburn. One house at a time, one street at a time, we are working with the generous folks of Lexington to help improve our community. You We accomplish our mission through partnerships. We offer opportunities for folks to share their resources in many ways: Donations are always appreciated in the form of cash, in-kind products and services, or new and gently used home goods and building materials to the ReStore. Volunteers of all skill levels and interests are the foundation of our program. We need volunteers to hammer and paint, serve on committees, take pictures, work in the ReStore, etc. We are an ecumenical Christian ministry, founded on a principle we believe Jesus modeled for us: love one another. We accept as supporters and families without regard to faith or belief. We do appreciate the undergirding of prayer which keeps us going when times are challenging and joyful. Lexington Habitat changes the lives of those who serve with us it reaches in and grabs your heart and doesn t let go. Come, join the family! Our programs success is tracked through surveys, notes, and follow-up interviews. 6

7 Examples of Program Success MEET ONE OF OUR HOMEOWNER S Our true assessment of our return on investment will come with satisfaction surveys, and stories like these: One tangible example that exemplifies the beauty and purpose of our organization is the story of Jackie Boone. Lexington Habitat for Humanity was only the beginning for Jackie Boone. A recovered drug addict who overcome major obstacles and became a homeowner, Everybody calls me a crybaby, but I cry every time I think about how much my life has changed, she said. The people at Habitat believed in me, so I can t help but believe in myself. I thank God for them. Pink roses dot the landscaping in front of Jackie Boone s Habitat house. From the first nail to the finishing touches, Jackie had Lexington Habitat staff, volunteers and donors by her side helping her gain the skills and confidence she needed to become a first time homeowner. It was important to Jackie to have a home for her grandchildren. Since becoming a homeowner in 2008, Jackie has been promoted to team leader at her job and she has maintained spotless credit. She learned the importance of financial management during Lexington Habitat homeownership classes. She is a shining example of Habitat s emphasis on homeowner education paving the way for successful homeownership. On any given day sweat, tears, and joy are all around us. In the Construction Department, a first wall is going up in a home for all in the community to see. In the office, development staff are soliciting donations, family services is taking calls for those who need a home and providing them with excitement about their future. On any given day, a family is turning the key to more than a door, but a new life that exceeds all their dreams. What we do is more than just providing a house for someone, it is providing a new way of living that spreads throughout a community and in turn takes an area from hopelessness and despair to vibrancy and joy. Love Your Neighborhood Description In 2015 Lexington Habitat launched Love Your Neighborhood Critical Home Repair & Home Preservation. This program helps low-income homeowners make needed repairs so they can live in a safe, healthy and affordable home. Critical Home Repair is part of a Habitat for Humanity nation-wide effort to serve homeowners who are affected by age, disability or family circumstances and struggle to maintain the integrity of their homes. Through extensive interior or exterior work, critical health, life and/or safety and affordability issues are alleviated. Population Served,, Lexington Habitat s Love Your Neighborhood Critical Home Repair & Home Preservation program requires an affordable payment from the homeowner for a small portion of the repair costs. The program focuses on both exterior and interior home repair services such as roof repairs and replacement, wall repairs, floor systems, weatherization, electrical, plumbing and HVAC, and handicap accessibility issues. Program Comments CEO Comments One of my assignments while studying at Lexington Theological Seminary many years ago was to write an essay on how I understood the term Gospel (good news). For me the message is clear and unequivocal: we 7

8 are to love God and love each other. It is that simple. It is that difficult. The letter to the Galatians says it like this: For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.... Bear one another s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill that law. Decent housing is a burden for thousands in our community and millions around the world. One of the things we have learned in almost 30 years of ministry is that a decent place to live includes more than the structures we inhabit. A decent place to live includes the street, neighborhood and community as a whole. The burden of housing is tied to other burdens: health, financial ability to support family and community, safety, educational success, relationships, satisfaction with life, happiness... hope. While decent, affordable housing is at the center of our mission, our vision that everyone has a decent place to live led us to recognize these other factors. We are proud of our history of offering homeownership to more than 425 families. We are proud of our vision, expanding into new ways to serve more families and our community as a whole. The Love Your Neighborhood projects are the essence of this expansion. These projects include street clean-ups which improve safety and make the streets more attractive. Home repair projects offer minor exterior repairs which improve the safety and quality of homes; critical home repairs offer homeowners the opportunity to make needed improvements with structural issues affecting safety, health and energy efficiency. While proud and grateful for these and other accomplishments, we know there is more to be done. In 2015 we embarked on a strategic planning process to inform how we should continue to serve this generous and compassionate community. I am excited about what God is showing and teaching us through this process. I pray that we will be open and faithful to whatever it is God desires for this Affiliate for the next five, ten... and fifty years. God has used a myriad of unique and gifted folks to share God s love with a new voice which has echoed through the centuries. Listen, can you hear it? I can... and what I hear it saying is that God has and will continue to use willing and steadfast people to help ensure we all have a decent place to live and, if we listen, God will continue to show us how. 8
