Proof of Concept (PoC) in South Eastern Europe Best Practices, Challenges and Opportunities for Promoting Technology Transfer and Innovation Knowledge Transfer, Technology transfer. Technology innovation IP Commercialization Challenges for Universities Creating markets from research Research and Development (R&D) Institutions in Western Balkans
3 CREATING MARKETS FROM RESEARCH RESULTS Can we do it in Macedonia, Western Balkan Countries, SEE!? YES! Because KNOLWEDGE IS GROWING, TECHNOLOGY IS ALWAYS CHANGING, NEW CHALENGES from day to day! BUT What about the ExisHng LegislaHon, Funding and Challenges of Establishing Public Private Partnerships
4 Looking back: Macedonia and the region of Western Balkans in the past years, or since 1991 Structurally weak Relying mainly on basic industry Unemployment Demotivation Resignation Brain Drain
5 WB s Philosophy!? 5 companies with 200 employees are safer than 1 company with 1000 employees and 100 businesses with 10 employees are more flexible than 10 businesses with 100 employees New business fields and new technologies
Evolution of Academic Philosophy: From Basic Research to Technology Transfer 6 DefiniHon: Technology transfer is the process of taking an inven]on from its incep]on in a laboratory to a commercialized product. [1] Obstacles to EffecHve Technology Transfer: In the tradi]onal view, overt commercializa]on is in contradic]on to the pure goal of scien]fic enquiry. Private universi]es with large endowments have been concerned that engaging in commercializa]on may subject them to the lawsuits [1] prof. Thomas George, University of Missouri, St.Louis
7 TRADITIONAL UNIVERSITIES in SEE!? Protected places for research and teaching looking for truth Public funding Tuition fees State subventions Challenges and changes in recent decades IN WESTERN BALKANS: Mass increase ( massification ) of higher education institutions Wide access to the population Growing number of higher education institutes ( PUBLIC AND PRIVATE) Other sources of income Accountability of Public value Economic value
