2 Minutes of the August Meeting Keith Miller The Meeting was called to order with the Pledge of Allegiance at 7:07. Board members present were the President, Secretary and Treasurer. There were a total of 19 members present. New Members and Guests: None this month. Approval of Meeting Minutes: M/S/P to approve the minutes from last month s meeting. Treasury Report: M/S/P to approve the Treasurer s Report. The treasury is roughly $300 ahead of the balance this time last year. Beginning Balance: $5, Income: $ Expenses: $ Ending Balance: $ 5, Safe and Sound: We had a visit from our easterly neighbor regarding one particular model that was too loud. The model was subsequently measured and confirmed to conform to the club s limitation of 96 db at 10 feet (measured in at 94 db). We re doing our job! Old Business: Bulletin Board In response to our request for club member volunteers to build an upgraded bulletin board (May meeting), Bob Muhleman stepped up and offered to use materials he has laying around to provide a more centralized and protected bulletin board. Thanks, Bob! Gate Locks To clear up confusion, we drew a map on a white-board to show where we have gates with locks, and which ones need to be opened during flying sessions. The main entrance, pin/safety box and gate to the river bed need to be unlocked by the first person at the field, and locked again by the last person to leave. The gate to the river bed must be unlocked during flying sessions to permit rapid access to potential fire hazards. The East and West personnel gates stay locked, however if members need to access areas outside of the fenced area, they re reminded to re-lock the gates. All combinations are the same. The gate in the new 3-wire fence has no lock. Sand Buckets Ted recommends putting additional buckets close to the river bed access gate. Existing sand buckets in the pits can be used to cool off any damaged LiPos, while the ones at the gate will be readily available for quick response. The President and Safety Officer will execute this plan it s a good one! Thanks, Ted. Pool noodles and fence visibility Ideas are still bouncing around whether we need visibility markers on the 3-wire fence. Discussion included whether or not we need high contrasting tape, foam noodles, or anything at all for the top of the fence. One member mentioned that it may be a bit harsh on the otherwise serene color pallet. The topic was tabled pending further discussions. New Business: Lance Edmunson (in absentia) asked the club to reserve the last Saturday in August to host another electric pylon race event (featuring the E-Flite Mini Sticks and T-28 Trojans see the January 2011 issue of Hangar News) on 27 August. Carried forward. Since this is inside of our normally published newsletter timeframe, notification will be primarily by . Drawing for Free Membership: Bill Barth sorry, must be present to win. Model Sharing: Rick Mathews brings us yet another masterpiece. This month he presented his Top Flite RC Nobler. The kit was so old, he had to replace all wing sheeting and some of the formers. To boot, the plans shrank! The drawings no longer matched the parts! The cowl is fully carved balsa, and Page 2

3 the only plastic on the model is the canopy. It s painted with Home Depot spray paint (primer red, black and yellow, not enamel), and finished off with an automotive clear coat urethane. Power is electric. Beautiful!! it all with pattern quality hardware. The supplied hardware had only two wood screws on the rudder horn that didn t even penetrate the depth of the wood! Tom used servo lead mounts (that jet pilots use) to keep servo wiring clean. Demonstrations: None this month. For the Good of the Order: None this month Story Time: None this month Electric Seminar: Keith conducted the seminar this month for one member. Tom McCart showed off his Great Planes Reactor bipe. Tom loves building, but resorted to ARFs when CA and balsa dust allergies became problem. He loves the long tail moment of the Reactor. He raved about this ARFs construction, as each joint inside is thoroughly CA d (not just held together by intermittent blobs of hot glue). He even checked deep inside with flashlight. Tom uses an OS 95 four stroke for power, and even with a RAM glow driver on a dedicated 1500 mah battery, it s still light at 7.5 lbs. One downside the hardware was undesirable, not suited for such an aerobatic plane. He replaced Raffle: Ted just broke even this month, probably due to the thin turnout on such a hot evening. As always, Ted provided a wide selection of neat and useful items, as well as some donated items. Larry Kosta Black and Decker hand screwdriver set Keith MDS 40 engine Scott Graupmann Dynamite hand tool kit Scott Graupmann Fox hand launch glider Dave Mathews Zona hand saw Bob Muhleman Gallon of Cool Power, epoxy Bob Muhleman passed Dave Mathews Hobbico AccuCycle charger (later returned) Ryan Crutchfield Electrifly 4 pack LiPo charger Tom McCart Café 67 meal ticket Bob Muhleman passed Lee Main Café 67 meal ticket Bob again passed Art Flores Helping hands with magnifying glass Fred Miller glow driver Art Flores glow driver Fred Miller passed (the AccuCycle) Vic Pretto passed (the AccuCycle) Rich Crutchfield kept the AccuCycle! The Meeting adjourned 7:53. Page 3

4 President s Message It is hard to believe that another summer is just about over. September is almost upon us, and soon it will be Fall. Unfortunately, October in San Diego has come to mean fire season, so we need to be especially mindful of our safety rules and procedures while out at the field. At the beginning of the year, in support of our Charter as an AMA Gold Leader Club, I asked the club to schedule a fund-raising event for October 8. Over the past several years I have become familiar with The Crime Victims Fund(CVF) of San Diego, a volunteer organization devoted to providing immediate assistance to victims of violent crimes. You can read about the work of this outstanding organization at: Ms. Patti Colston, Executive Director of CVF, has accepted my invitation to attend the September meeting and to describe the organization and what it does. I think you will find this to be a very interesting presentation. For the October 8 th event, I plan for us to sponsor an auction of model airplane merchandise, possibly a swap meet (to be discussed), a Fun-Fly, and a barbecue. I have been collecting some donations already: Five vintage control-line scale warbird kits via Don Madison s estate liquidation service, several R/C kits from my own collection, at least one complete but unflown electric sport ARF and one original sport ARF, both from my shelf I will be offering these as receiver-ready, etc. Many of us have a lot of new but surplus stuff that is too valuable to let go at a swap meet, but might generate some reasonable bids at an auction. I will be calling on you to donate some goods after you hear what CVF is all about. And I have been offered professional consulting assistance to secure media coverage for the day of the event. My personal goal is to raise $500 for CVF while presenting the club and the hobby to the public in a very positive light. I am passing along a notice I received from Mr. Art Roper, from Birmingham Alabama. Art is an R/C hobbyist who has developed a proposal to serve hospitalized children through R/C demonstrations. He is entering his proposal in the Pepsi Refresh competition, which is a nationwide effort of Pepsico to award grants to deserving projects, based on popular voting results on the internet. You can read all about Pepsi Refresh at You can read about Art s project at Art is requesting us all to look for his project to be posted on the Pepsi Refresh site September 1, and then to vote for his project to be funded. Finally, I am reminding the membership that October is the time to nominate candidates for the Club Officer election in November. You will need to elect a new president, as well as several other officer positions. The outgoing officers will remain on the Board of Directors for at least one year, and so we expect to maintain strong continuity within the new Board. I have taken considerable satisfaction from having had the opportunity to work with the current Board in overcoming a number of challenges that our club has faced during the past four years. Now I need to devote my time and attention to other pursuits. It should be a very interesting meeting on the 6th. Please come with ideas, questions, and nominees in mind. Happy Skies, Ben Newkirk Page 4
