In 2017, we applied for and successfully received $16, in Special Fees. How do you plan to publicize your events/programs to the greater Stanford community? Have you registered with Events at Stanford? We typically publicize our events through a variety of means- -CardinalSync, Facebook, Eventbrite, the main Stanford Events listing, flyers, and freshman house meetings--and we plan to continue all of these publicity tools. If you applied for Special Fees last year, is there an increase in the amount you're seeking this year? If so, why? No. If you are an umbrella group, please list the groups for which you are applying for Special Fees, their ASSU account numbers, and contact information for their financial officers. Not applicable Please define the services provided by your group with the Special Fee, as per the ASSU Constitution: brings the music of steel pan and the culture of Trinidad and Tobago to Stanford's campus through our music and events. Particularly for student groups, we provide a free source of performances/music to bolster their other events. For the members of our ensemble, we offer musical/cultural education, countless opportunities to improve one's performance abilities, and a strong, caring community that many of our members cite as their most important support group at Stanford. What are the three largest line item requests in your budget and why? 1. Equipment Purchase. Our group wishes to purchase a double tenor pan (and two stands/cases to be able to store/play the pans) to meet the needs of our growing group. Increasing the number of instruments ensures that every member of our ensemble has an instrument to play. Furthermore, it enables us to more effectively conduct workshops/classes with people outside of our ensemble. This increases our impact on the Stanford and local community. Unfortunately, due to the labor-intensive process of making steel pans, they are just expensive pieces of equipment. 2. Equipment Maintenance. Since steelpans are percussion instruments, they experience a great amount of wear throughout the year. Thus, it is essential for our pans to be consistently tuned so that we can guarantee optimal sound quality and extend their lifespan. What events/programs does your group hold throughout the year for the Stanford Community? Our largest self-run event is our annual Spring Show, where we showcase the music we have been learning all year to the greater Stanford community. However, we also play 5-10 Stanford gigs every quarter, typically for free for other campus groups/organizations. Some of our biggest, most-regular campus gigs include Dance Marathon, Admit Weekend, Faces, Arillaga Nights, and CSA Annual Banquet. When funding allows, we also bring guest performers and hold workshops on campus for the greater Stanford community. For example, last year we invited renowned Jazz pannist Andy Narell to lead a pan workshop and collaborate with us for a concert. We hope to host more events like these in the future. 3. Honoraria. Our instructor, Akwasi Abrefah leads workshops with our group which focus on the cultural elements of steel pan music (history, traditional music styles, etc.). Our student music directors rarely have the expertise to conduct these workshops, given that many of our members do not have prior experience with steel pan. Thus, our instructor's expertise is vital in aiding us achieve our mission of sharing Caribbean music and culture. As it becomes harder for Akwasi to volunteer his time and also pursue other career options, we hope to be able to properly compensate him for the role he plays in our organization. What is the average attendance at your events? The average attendance at our twice-weekly rehearsals is all of our members. The attendance at our annual Spring Show and other major concerts is people, typically. For our smaller events, we typically have an audience of people. - Application [#20229] Page 2 of 5

3 5344 [#20229] Why are you requesting Special Fees? We are requesting special fees because we are interested in expanding the reach of our group. In order for us to accept more ensemble members during auditions and increase our ability to hold workshops/classes within the Stanford community and in the greater local community, we primarily request additional equipment and maintenance of our current instruments. Cardinal Calypso has been using much of the same equipment that was purchased when the group was initiated 10 years ago, but over the past several years, we have increased our size, involvement, and commitment to steel pan culture/education. We hope to use Special Fees to help our group continue to grow and allow us to further spread Trinidadian and steel pan culture. - Application [#20229] Page 3 of 5
