8 Special Topic Prizes - special topic prizes sponsored by industrial and research partners who are searching for innovative solutions in certain satnav related fields - awarded for the first time in 2007 with the aim of better involving the competition s sponsors in its overall theme. They are also intended as a format encouraging joint realisation of the winning idea by the winner and the sponsor. - in 2008, 80% of all participants took advantage of the opportunity to submit their ideas for both regional evaluation and consideration for one of the special topic prizes. - entrants who also submit their innovations for one of the special topic prizes are twice as likely to be nominated. As the example of 2008 triple winner Sci-Tech Systems shows, it is possible for a participant to be nominated as a regional winner, a special topic winner, and as the overall winner, the GALILEO Master.

11 DLR Special Topic Prize Advanced Applications for the Industry and the Public Sector The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR) is Germany s national research centre for aeronautics and space. Objectives: PRECISE, INTERFERENCE- FREE and SECURE these are the distinctive features of the GNSS applications that operate to the sustained benefit of the economy and the public sector. The DLR is looking for creative ideas where these criteria are essential Fields of applications: 1. Applications calling for exact time control 2. GNSS-based applications in public health 3. New methods or applications that improve signal verification and reduce interference susceptibility 4. New methods or applications that enhance the accuracy of GNSS positioning and the speed of data distribution on the ground 5. New applications for Public Regulated Service

12 DLR Special Topic Prize The three best entries will be fully developed and implemented jointly with DLR, leading on to next-generation applications. Prizes: Each of the three winners will receive a voucher for DLR services pertaining to the further development of their ideas, such as feasibility studies, concept studies, and prototype or business development. The prize can therefore lead to direct implementation. 1st prize: a DLR voucher worth EUR 70,000 2nd prize: a DLR voucher worth EUR 50,000 3rd prize: a DLR voucher worth EUR 30,000 (note: EUR 10,000 is equivalent to one man-month)

13 GSA Special Topic Prize The Most Promising EGNOS Application Idea GSA is actively promoting the development of downstream applications that create demand for EGNOS and Galileo and provide economic and social benefits. With EGNOS scheduled to reach the Operations Qualification Review (OQR) in 2009, the focus of the GSA prize will be on EGNOS. Objectives: Raise EGNOS awareness in all user sectors Demonstrate the business potential of EGNOS Stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship in European GNSS markets Prize: The winner of the prize will get the opportunity to realise his/her idea at a suitable incubation centre of choice for up to 12 months.

15 ESA Special Topic Prize ESA Innovation Prize Mission of ESA s Technology Transfer Programme Office (TTPO): To facilitate the use of space technology and space systems for non-space applications To demonstrate the benefit of the European space programmes to European citizens. The TTPO is responsible for defining the overall approach and strategy for the transfer of space technologies including the incubation of start-up companies and their funding.

Prizes: 10,000 Euro an extensive support package for implementing the winning business plan

17 NAVTEQ Special Topic Prize The Most Innovative Location-Based Services Objectives NAVTEQ is looking for developers to submit innovative location-based ideas that work with mobile phones and/or wireless handheld devices using satellite positioning technology and NAVTEQ map data. Here are some suggested categories for your LBS idea submission. Content: use of content from NAVTEQ or third parties that enhances functionality or is the main feature of the solution Enterprise: applications related to helping inventory and people to function efficiently, plus local search advertising, buying, and billing Entertainment / Leisure: gaming, location-based imaging, sport, travel, and tourism Navigation: routing and turn-by-turn directions, POI lookup, and traffic and pedestrian applications Social networking: peer and find-me applications, or applications related to child/senior monitoring, safety alerts

18 NAVTEQ Special Topic Prize Prize: A 12-month incubation programme that consists of one year of free access to NAVTEQ map data, content, and services. Approximately EUR 25,000 worth of promotional activities, including coaching, a business development programme, a personal technical consultant, promotion on NN4D, a press release, etc. A personal technical consultant will assist in seeing the winning idea through to successful implementation. The opportunity to present the winning application to NAVTEQ partners/customers (for example, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, decarta, Telefonica)

20 Baden-Württemberg Special Topic Prize Criteria: Innovative solutions and applications in the field of satellite navigation and mobile IT Proposals along the value chain Solutions for the transfer from existing to new applications as well as radical innovations Prizes: The winner will be offered a platform to present ideas, products and solutions on a special Baden-Wurttemberg event as well as on the upcoming international trade fair POSITIONALE, May 18-20, 2010 in Stuttgart Second and third place: platform to present ideas at the Baden-Wurttemberg event The forum offers cooperative action to develop and promote concepts and ideas with strong and experienced partners

21 Madrid Special Topic Prize Support of Life The Madrid Region and Aerospace Cluster, together with a selected group of Spanish firms and institutions, will award a special prize for civil protection, life support, and other safety-critical applications. Objectives: The aim is to enhance the scope of both the Galileo Control Center and the Safety of Life Center, which will be based in Madrid, allowing a longterm partnership. Prizes: a cash award of up to EUR 20,000 (tbc) the opportunity to realise an innovation project

22 Prizes and Promotion Main Prize The overall winner the GALILEO Master will be chosen from the regional winners and the special topic winners. - grant of EUR 20,000 - chance to enter a 6-months incubation programme in favoured region to realise the awarded idea. Regional Prizes The partner regions are very welcome to offer a prize to its regional winners and finalists. This could be e.g. prize money, an incubation programme, consulting, etc.

23 Prizes and Promotion Benefits for winners and participants - Getting involved in the ESNC gives participants access to an international network of over 100 experts from the fields of industry and research, government officials, foundation centers, and other international organisations. This network s scope and quality truly is unique. All of those involved are focused on driving new developments and realising convincing application ideas. - At the Awards Ceremony in October 2009, the winning ideas are presented before an audience of 450 prominent guests - Experts from up to 20 regions will examine the submitted innovations - Media representatives from all over the world will report on the winning ideas - The continued support of the competition s regional management teams will aid participants in sustaining the long-term development of your solution.
