2 Dear Participant of the 1 st FEMS Congress of European Microbiologists! We are honoured that an important event such as the first congress of European microbiologists is taking place in Ljubljana, especially since this is an entirely new way of bringing researchers in the field of microbiology together. Slovenia is now on the threshold of becoming the full member of European Union and through that become actively involved in European programs. It is our intention to play an active role in the process of broadening the European Research Area with two main purposes: to strengthen the scientific and technological bases for industry and to encourage its international competitiveness while promoting the research activities. 1F FEMS CO O F E U R MICROBIO The 1 st FEMS congress of European Microbiologists is an excellent example of implementation of European Research Area initiative and a good opportunity for the extensive overview of the research work in different scientific fields. On this occasion, it is appropriate to emphasise the fact that the biggest discoveries in the field of microbiology come from Europe. To open new possibilities for European expertise in microbiology to become actively and efficiently involved in problem solving in food, environmental and other industries as well as in health care, we need to bring together researchers and other professionals from different disciplines. During EuroMicroDay2003 we would like to present some of the scientific and research programmes of the European Community, such as the Sixth Framework Programme, INTAS programme, COST programme, NATO science programme and EUREKA programme. Through this, we would especially like to encourage the collaboration of small and medium enterprises and research institutions and stimulate them to jointly participate with new and innovative projects in the Sixth Framework Programme and other European research programmes. A new tool EuroMicroSquare2003 is offering the opportunity for the match - making and for drafting ideas for proposals. In the afternoon workshops important speakers involved with the mentioned programmes, will give their presentations and some practical information such as how to participate in these programmes. We strongly believe that rich and vibrant milieu of the congress will bring about numerous new ideas and promising projects. You are most welcome to join this unique event ant take the opportunity to give, share and receive the state of the art knowledge before and during the 1 st FEMS Congress of European Microbiologists. 3 st NGRESS NGRESS O P E A N LOGISTS General information EuroMicroDay2003 EuroMicroDay2003 will bring together European scientists and entrepreneurs on microbiology to prepare innovative project proposals. Event will be organised in three parts. The first part will be the general presentation of some Scientific and Technological Programmes of the European Union. The second part - EuroMicroSquare will be the poster sessions of innovative and interested ideas for project proposals where potential coordinators will seek for partners (research, technology transfer offers, etc.). The third part of the activity will be conducted as workshops for different project calls. 1 st FEMS Congress of European Microbiologists The association of Federation of European Microbiological Society organizes the congress of European Microbiologist the first time. The main purpose of the congress is to prepare an overview of the research work from different scientific fields but with the connection on the microbiology. At the congress the document "European declaration on microbiology" will be discussed and it will be important piece of writing for future network of microbiologists. EuroMicroDay2003 Objectives Presentation of FP6, COST, INTAS, NATO sciences, EUREKA programmes, etc. Presentation of the project proposals Technology transfer issues Bilateral/multilateral discussions Workshops on how to apply to different programmes' calls Scientific and Technological Programmes of the European Union Scientific and Technological Programmes of the European Union where topics are focused also on microbiology: The 6 th Framework Programme - FP6 The Sixth Framework Programme covers Community activities in the field of research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) for the period 2002 to The budget is MEUR and will be spend on funding of projects. Projects are selected on competitive way based on Calls for Proposals. Detailed information: The COST Programme - European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research Established in 1971, the COST programme is the oldest and the biggest European programme of S&T research. It is coordinated by the European Union. Coordination activities are financed from FP6, the research ones from national resources. Detailed information:

4 The INTAS programme INTAS is an independent International Association formed by the European Community, European Union's Member States and like-minded countries acting to preserve and promote the valuable scientific potential of the NIS (New Independent States of the former Soviet Union) partner countries through East-West Scientific co-operation. Detailed information: The EUREKA programme This programme was established in 1985 by Western European countries and the EU with the aim of promoting industrial and technological development of Europe, based on co-operation of countries in industrial development projects financed exclusively from national sources (private funds stimulated by public co-funding). Detailed information: The NATO Science Programme This programme was founded in 1957 along with the establishment of the NATO Science Committee. The programme's objective is to enhance science and technology through a variety of transatlantic links. The programme is divided into 4 sub-programmes: 1. Science Fellowships: 2. Science for Peace: EuroMicroSquare Poster sessions of innovative and interested project proposals The posters will be clustered: A. Enterprises Corner - Enterprises looking for complementary partners in research arena and researchers offer their findings for technology transfer to enterprises. Participants will be able to present their ideas to potential partners from industry or research institutions. Participants will be able to present their already developed new technologies, new materials, etc. B. Research Corner - Research institutions looking for partners for joint research venture. Participants will be able to present their ideas to potential partners from research institutions or industry for starting new projects. Entrepreneurial spirit will be encouraged in pan-european arena favoured by the philosophy of European Research Area. Bilateral/Multilateral discussions among participants will be organised during the poster session on Sunday 29 th June. If potential partners will need more time for clarification and development of their projects, they should contact the organisers. They will provide meeting rooms on Tuesday afternoon (1 st July) to avoid interference with congress programme. If the coordinators will express the need that some Slovenian experts covering particular European research programme should be present on Tuesday afternoon discussions, the organisers will provide those persons.
