3 FROM THE BOARD CHAIR & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SAGE took significant steps in 2011 to expand programs that will advance the organization s goals, with the support of our dedicated Board of Directors, many of whom are continuing their Board service in We are committed to serving as a growth engine for new and existing Eastside businesses, and expanded programs to reflect that commitment in The Store-Front Grant Program provides qualified businesses an opportunity to improve their businesses with matching grants. The program launched in July 2010 with grants up to $10,000. In 2011, that doubled to $20,000 as SAGE expanded to meet community needs. As the Store- Front Grant Program grew in 2011, it replaced funding provided by the Economic Development Incentive Fund Program, which had also supported building renovation, expansion or improvements. Our ability to develop partnerships and alliances allowed us to leverage resources in Mayor Julian Castro and Councilwoman Ivy Taylor continue to support our mission through Eastside summits and new partnerships. Our joint venture in late 2010 with the City of San Antonio s Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization (NCR) Program formed the Government Hill NCR Partnership (GHNCR). In January 2011, the GHNCR was officially recognized by the City of San Antonio and awarded a planning grant focusing on strengthening and supporting business development in the Government Hill area to provide more business ownership and employment opportunities. We look forward to working together throughout 2012, focusing on expanding the Store-Front Grant Program, identifying and pursuing public and private economic development projects, identifying and developing relationships with major Eastside employers and building a citywide coalition of support for economic development projects, including the New Braunfels Avenue Revitalization. 4 MISSION & VISION MISSION SAGE is a non-profit organization, governed by an 11-member board of directors. Through our partnerships, alliances and leveraging resources, SAGE serves as an economic development resource for current business owners and potential new businesses moving into our community. As a standalone 501(c)3, we receive funding from both public and private sources including the City of San Antonio. We identify the needs of the Eastside business community and provide assistance to businesses that already have a foothold in our commercial corridor. VISION The organization s goal is to champion our business community and help support the successes that exist and help create new opportunity. Our four driving principles are: Advocate for efficient, sustainable growth for San Antonio s Eastside Champion small business development Maintain and promote the area s history and culture Provide innovative, progressive solutions to East Side challenges. ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY At the midpoint of the first decade of the new century, San Antonio began to experience an economic renaissance. While development and growth was taking place, there was and continues to be an overwhelming concern that something equitable needs to be done to include the Eastside Community in the growing prosperity. There was consensus that the area needed a credible economic development organization (EDO) to formulate a plan of action that would include all facets of the Eastside. There was at that time an organization called the Community Economic Revitalization Agency (CERA) that was in the process of disintegrating. It was decided that CERA needed to be revised or a new EDO was needed to fulfill promises from the past and chart a new mission for the future. 6 STORE-FRONT GRANT RECIPIENTS The Store-Front Grant Program provides qualified businesses with matching grants of up to $20,000. Each of the following grant recipients provided an equal amount to fund their improvements. Store-Front Grants are only available to businesses that own their property. AAMCO Southeast, 5038 Rigsby: Family-owned service center. Use of grant: Expanded the garage to accommodate more customers, installed new bay doors and increased work area. Appliance Liquidation Outlet, 500 Carolina Street: Family-owned retail business. Use of grant: Painted the exterior of the 1950s building with ecofriendly paint and constructed a fence behind the facility. Atlas Body Shop, 922 E. Carson Street: Family-owned business since Use of grant: Improved landscaping. Big Lou s Pizza, 2014 S. W.W. White Road and Big Lou s Burgers & BBQ, 2048 S. W.W. White Road: Family-owned restaurants. Use of grant: Improved signs and lighting, helped open Big Lou s Burgers & BBQ. Dr. James Brown, DDS, PA, 3030 Rigsby Ave: Dental practice. Use of grant: Installed landscaping around the new facility, specifically the parking lot area and courtyard Cameo Theatre Corp, 1123, 1127, 1131 E. Commerce: Historic theater since the 1940s. Use of grant: Repainted the outside entrance, fixed a leak in the theater roof and helped restore columns and an outside porch. CMD Holdings, LLC, 2030 E. Houston: Owner of Capital Electric and other business interests. Use of grant: Interior and exteriors renovations to building, allowing staff to relocate from a former office. 7 Fashion & Mart/Murf s Better Burgers, 1103 Mason Street: Neighborhood retail outlet. Use of grant: Built a patio for the new restaurant Murf s Better Burgers. Johnny s Seafood Restaurant, 1816 N. New Braunfels: Now Ma Harper s Creole Kitchen. Use of grant: Improvements to the façade and roof work on the historic building. Fatty s Burgers & More, 1624 E. Commerce: Restaurant. Use of grant: Replaced awning, added new windows and a wood staircase on the side of the building. Created a second customer entrance with a new canopy. Morrison Properties, 1921, 1923 & 1925 Rigsby: Houses Training Wheels Learning Center and VIP Adult Daycare. Use of grant: New outside lighting and signs, exterior painting and repaving the parking lots. Flowers by Mary, 544 S. W.W. White Road: Family-owned flower shop. Use of grant: Renovated parking lot and grounds to improve drainage, renovated a building behind the business for storage. Golden Arch, 734 N. New Braunfels: Neighborhood business center, barber shop, mini-grocery and BBQ restaurant. Use of grant: Restored windows and doors at the historic former Grandview Food Center. GM&N Auto Title, GM&N Auto Insurance and J&S Bail Bond, 223 N. New Braunfels: Family-owned financial services. Use of grant: Renovated three buildings to house all services. Mr. & Mrs. G s Home Cooking, 2222 S. W.W. White Road: Family-owned restaurant since Use of grant: Exterior improvements including painting the building and enhancing the parking lot. Webb Eye Associates, PA, 1720 S. WW White Rd: Optometrist office. Use of grant: New signage installed at the clinic. 430 Austin, LLC, 430 Austin Street: Real estate investor. Use of grant: Restored windows on the second floor of the historic main building (built in 1893), and windows in an attached building.

8 COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION PARTNERSHIPS At SAGE, we believe that the revitalization of the Eastside of San Antonio, like any community, calls for a three-pronged approach. Community Revitalization is our ultimate goal. It is like a threelegged stool. One leg is Education, the second leg is Housing (Healthy Neighborhoods) and the third is Economic Development. It takes each leg for the whole to stand. EASTSIDE REVITALIZATION While SAGE is primarily responsible for the Economic Development prong, we will never be successful without the other two. With that in mind, SAGE formed strategic alliances in 2011 with organizations whose core competencies address the other two issues. In the Education arena, SAGE is working closely with the United Way of San Antonio and the San Antonio Independent School District on the $25 million Promise Neighborhood Initiative. EDUCATION ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT On the housing front, SAGE is working with the San Antonio Housing Authority on its Choice Neighborhood Grant application that will be submitted in HOUSING Additionally, SAGE is working with Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS), other housing non-profits and developers to develop an infill housing strategy to bring market-rate housing to the area. SAGE s work with these other organizations partnering to build the three-legged stool of community revitalization is critical to our success and the transformation of San Antonio s Eastside. 9 SAGE 2012 PROGRAM FOCI SAGE will have 5 program foci for Continue and expand the Storefront Grant program. The program currently provides matching grants up to $20,000 for façade improvements to businesses within City of San Antonio s City Council District 2. Existing requirements and provisions of the program remain the same. Development of the program includes offering matching grants in amounts more than $20,000 based on economic development criteria, such as the number of new jobs created. Build a Citywide Coalition of Support for economic development projects on the eastside. Prepare proposals/presentations to attract and encourage new businesses to San Antonio to locate on the Eastside. Identify and develop relationships with the major employers on the eastside.
