2 Your BBB Foundation Mission To support your BBB s vision of an ethical marketplace through community education and recognition programs. Your BBB Foundation The Better Business Bureau Foundation of Northwest Florida is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization formed to support your BBB s efforts to provide community education and recognition programs. Your BBB Foundation supports BBB s vision of an ethical marketplace, where buyers and sellers can trust one another. Our service area includes Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton and Washington counties in northwest Florida. How you can help Your BBB Foundation looks to individual donors, businesses and organizations to sustain funding for its community education and recognition programs. How your support of our efforts to protect, educate and inform our community by making a taxdeductable contribution. Businesses and community organizations interested in sponsoring a specific activity such as our Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics Customer Service Excellence Student Ethics Scholarship event, Military Line programs or educational outreach efforts may receive recognition through a variety of outlets. 3 Education Programs Secure Your ID Day As identity theft continues to be a growing problem (Florida jumped to #3 in the nation, per capita, for identity theft victims in a 2009 report from the Consumer Sentinel), your BBB Foundation has partnered with BBB Accredited Business Gilmore Services to offer free document shredding for individuals with up to 50 pounds of sensitive documents to be responsibly destroyed. In 2009, your BBB Foundation, along with its partners Gilmore Services, WEARTV, Cat County 98.7 FM, Qantum Communications and WJHGTV, helped 3,762 people shred over 100,000 pounds of sensitive documents, keeping them out of the hands of potential identity thieves. Community Education To further our mission of supporting your BBB s vision of an ethical marketplace, your BBB Foundation seeks to educate businesses, charities and consumers to make wise buying and giving decisions. Your BBB Foundation believes that empowering individuals to make informed decisions helps combat fraud and unethical behavior, championing BBB s mission to be the leader in advancing marketplace trust. We reach out to our local community in a number of ways: Presentations In 2009, your BBB Foundation gave 16 presentations to civic groups (such as Rotary and Lions Clubs), senior groups (such as those in churches and congregate meal sites), professional organizations (including the Association of Fundraising Professionals) and more. A total of 299 people were able to learn about BBB programs, understand how common scams target consumers, ask questions about their unique situations and come away as empowered consumers and/or business leaders. Publications Over the years, your BBB Foundation has responded to demand in the local marketplace and produced publications to meet those needs. In 2008, your BBB Foundation created the first Charity Giving Guide, distributed electronically. In 2009, your BBB Foundation printed the guide for the first time and before the holiday giving season, distributed it to BBB Accredited Businesses (who may be approached to make a charitable donation around the holidays), the charities in your BBB Northwest Florida s database, community leaders, donors and major philanthropists, and the local media. Tradeshows/Expos Tradeshows and expos provide an excellent opportunity for your BBB Foundation to talk oneonone with individuals about a variety of topics ranging from choosing a contractor, protecting against identity theft, common marketplace scams and more. Last year, your BBB Foundation participated in 14 expos or tradeshows, reaching 2,055 people on an individual level.

4 Recognition Programs Why Recognition? Your BBB Foundation recognizes businesses, charities, individual employees and high school students who make doing the right thing a priority. Your BBB spends a great deal of time alerting the public to scams, frauds and schemes. Recognition programs allow us to celebrate those who insist on making ethics, integrity their way of life. Your BBB Foundation once again held three recognition luncheons throughout its service area to honor those who standout in our community. Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics The Torch Award publicly recognizes businesses and charities that maintain a solid commitment to conducting their business practices in an ethical manner. Your BBB Foundation recognized the following businesses in 2009: District I Pro Clean Fine Rug, Carpet & Tile Care Butler Auto Recycling Coastal Bank & Trust of Florida District II Dental Temps Professional Services Gulf Coast Shutter Customer Service Excellence District III Gulf Coast Tree Specialists Lumley Plumbing & Heating Peaden Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing Your BBB Foundation created this new award in It s presented to an individual at any level of business who goes above and beyond in their customer service activities for the organization. In its inaugural year, this award was presented to Brenda Dukes, WEAR TV 3 and Christel Maples, Walton County Tax Collectors Office. Student Ethics Scholarship The Student Ethics Scholarship recognizes collegebound students who personify high ethics. Awards criteria include leadership, community service, academic achievement and an essay about character building. In 2009, your BBB Foundation honored the following students with a $1,000 scholarship: District I Angelina Malamo, Booker T. The Bureau funds a significant portion of the Foundation s expenses, as the Foundation is not up to full fundraising capacity. The estimated value of staff assistance, office space and shared expenses paid on behalf of the Foundation by the Bureau are shown as InKind contributions in the Statement of Activities. The amount of InKind contributions received from the Bureau totaled $51,808 for the year ending December 31, In addition, the Bureau contributed cash to the Foundation in the amount of $18,000 during the year ended December 31, 2009.
