MUNSTER TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY Story so far...
Past Where have we come from?
The Journey to Date National Strategy for Higher Education to 2030 (Hunt Report) released. Higher Education Landscape Document provided detail on the process and criteria for TU designation. Joint supplementary submission to the Landscape Document (Stage 1). Stage 2 submission completed and approved by the HEA and International Panel (Stage 3). MTU Integration Agreement approved by both Governing Bodies. MTU Project Office established and Project Management Framework created ongoing MTU Governance Board established and personnel recruited.
Commitments Made - MTU Integration Agreement (2015) Quality of the Student Experience An essential foundation ethos of the new university is that there is parity of esteem between two campuses in Cork and Kerry, and having regard to the variety of the student body in the future, that the quality of the student experience in both major campuses, supported by appropriate levels of student services, will be consistent with one another. Staff as a Key Stakeholder The MTU will continue as directed by the Minster to honour all nationally negotiated contracts and national agreements with respect to the terms and conditions of staff. There will be no compulsory redundancies and there will be no compulsory redeployment between the Cork and Kerry campuses. To read the full MTU Integration Agreement visit
Commitments Made - MTU Integration Agreement (2015) University Culture To ensure the creation of a single Student Brand Experience across the Kerry and Cork campuses, we recognise the need to protect the unique ethos of both campuses and their ability to respond to regional needs. The parties see this as being one of the key enablers of MTU. To read the full MTU Integration Agreement visit
Present Where are we now?
Current State MTU project is taking shape. Preparatory and planning work in progress and PMO established. Project Sponsors and Leaders appointed with some positions yet to be filled. Step change in the level of communication and interaction in respect of the project. Aim to be ready to prepare Stage 4 submission by the end of June Earliest possible date for MTU is September 2019.
DOES and HEA Commitment to TU Sector Mary Mitchell O Connor TD appointed Minister of State at the Department of Education and Skills with special responsibility for Higher Education in June 2017 Funding allocated from HEA Awards : Strategic Innovation and Development Fund 100, : Merger Fund 766, : Merger Fund 400,000 Total: 1,266,667 Ongoing high level engagement with senior government officials Cabinet has approved progression of the TU Bill (7 th November) to the Education Committee on 15 th November
Government Commitment Technological Universities have a key role to play in driving job creation and regional development. My plan focuses on creating strong regional competitive advantage based on technological innovation and skills, including multi-campus Technological Universities, research access and enterprise partnership. I look forward to progressing this important legislation and working with stakeholders on the development of technological universities. The technological university model provides the opportunity to drive regional development, provide more opportunities for students, and create a step change in the impact and influence of these institutions regionally, nationally and internationally.
