4 Where is Gyeongju? Gyeongju (under new English expression rule, Kyongju is changed to Gyeongju) is located in the south-eastern area of the Korean peninsula. It is placed 360 km from Seoul, the Capital city of Korea, and 30 km away from Pohang. On a fertile plain surrounded by mountains, Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Dynasty (57 BC AD). It has a great concentration of historic buildings, temples, grottos, royal tombs, and artifacts. Thus, this area is called a Museum without Walls. The UNESCO declared this area as a Human Heritage. Bomun Resort is located about 6 km away from downtown Gyeongju. The 2,750 acre resort area has a tourist center, five luxurious hotels, three golf courses, shopping arcades, a family amusement park, and folk villages.

8 How about weather? The weather during October is very pleasant. The fall season, with clear blue sky and gentle sunshine, is among the most favorable times to travel to Korea. The average maximum and minimum temperatures vary from 20 o C to 10 o C with a median humidity of 65%.

9 Where is Pohang? Pohang is located in the south-eastern tip of the Korean peninsula. It is famous for the home city of POSCO which is the second largest steel producer in the world. It takes one hour from Seoul Gimpo (Kimpo) Airport by airplane. There are 24 flights between Seoul and Pohang everyday.

10 POSTECH Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) is a private university sponsored by POSTECH Foundation. The university opened at the end of 1986 as Korea s first researchoriented institution of higher learning in science and technology. At present, 1,200 undergraduate and 1,500 graduate students, and 220 faculty members are carrying out their researches in four departments of science, six departments of engineering, and many other research laboratories including Pohang Accelerator Laboratory. 12 Pohang Accelerator Laboratory Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) has completed the Pohang Light Source (PLS) project on December 7, The PLS consists of a 2-GeV low-emittance storage ring and a 2-GeV electron linear accelerator. The PLS is the first major accelerator facility in Korea, and is being served as a national research facility. During the construction, Pohang Iron & Steel Company (POSCO) contributed 60% of total budget, or about U$180 million, and the government funded the balance. 14 Other R&D Facilities Korea Basic Science Institute is constructing KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) at in Daeduk Science Town (160 km south of Seoul) and will start fusion research from Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute is carrying out the high power proton accelerator project named KOMAC (Korea Multi-purpose Accelerator Complex).
