...A Heart for the Community Burdette Beckmann, Inc., also known as BBI, is a 62-year-old food brokerage company based in Hollywood, Florida. Founded by Bob and Sherry Taylor, BBI has grown from a mom and pop storefront operation to a national sales company with several hundred associates and offices around the nation. Robert Taylor, Jr., assumed the leadership of BBI when his father retired. From the earliest days of the company, BBI has been committed to giving back and honoring God and the community. As BBI grew, its charitable giving widened to include several worthy causes. When looking for a new charity to support in 2012, Robert Taylor, Jr. quickly realized that Habitat for Humanity of Broward was an ideal fit for BBI: The fundamental focus on providing housing to the needy and giving shelter to families resonated within our company and quickly became the axis for company meetings and events so that our team could participate. We are grateful to be allowed to be a part of Habitat for Humanity and are deeply committed to continuing to give toward new homes. Robert Taylor, Jr. BBI Owner Robert Taylor, Jr. 3
A Heart for Service Through Volunteerism BBI sponsored the construction of a new home in Miramar. The BBI team enthusiastically supported the cause by volunteering on the job site throughout the building process of their first sponsored home, which was completed on Sept. 25,
A Heart for People While the impact of BBI s home sponsorship is immediate, its effects are everlasting. BBI not only provided the bricks and mortar to build the house, but gave William and Cynthia Torres, their Habitat partner family, the hand up they needed to build a better life for their children. Each of their girls now have a room of their own and a yard in which to play. Most importantly, they have stability that may only be achieved through the dream of affordable homeownership. BBI has given my family hope, accomplishment, joy, comfort, strength and united us as one. THANK YOU for working with Habitat Broward in making the Torres family s dream come true! The Torres Family on Dedication Day Cynthia Torres Homeowner 5
A Heart for Habitat for Humanity of Broward Since establishing a partnership with Habitat Broward in 2012, BBI has generously invested numerous resources in our mission, including: Funding for two homes A home in Miramar that was completed in late 2013 A townhome in Hallandale Beach that will be completed and sold to a low income family in early 2015 Gifts-in-kind of candy and other snack food items to be sold in the Habitat ReStore, administrative offices and given to our volunteers on construction sites Launched Habitat Broward s Inaugural Clay Shooting Tournament in 2013 raising over $16,000 Robert Taylor, Jr. also invests his time by serving on the Board of Directors of Habitat Broward since 2013 BBI has been, and continues to be, one of our most inspirational sponsors. Robert and his team truly embody the core philosophy of Habitat Broward: That a small group of dedicated and selfless people can tremendously impact Broward County by building homes, stabilizing families and revitalizing neighborhoods. Perry Ecton, Executive Director Habitat Broward 100% of candy & snack proceeds go into Habitat Broward s mission 6

Over a Decade of Giving Wells Fargo s relationship with Habitat Broward started over a decade ago in With a shared philosophy that everyone deserves decent, safe and affordable housing and goal to promote affordable homeownership opportunities for low income people, Wells Fargo and Habitat Broward were a good fit from the outset. Since making its first gift in 2000, Wells Fargo has donated nearly $850,000 to Habitat Broward s mission. By strategically partnering and sharing resources, Wells Fargo and Habitat Broward accomplished far more together than they ever could alone. Cynthia Martin A simple thank you does not suffice given the level of commitment and dedication that Wells Fargo has made to Habitat for Humanity. Habitat Broward thanks you and looks forward to continuing our partnership to provide affordable homeownership opportunities to Broward County residents. Cynthia Martin, Business Training Consultant II with Wells Fargo s South Florida Learning & Development, represents Wells Fargo on Habitat Broward s young professionals group (HYP), Volunteer Committee, Women Build Committee and Board of Directors. 15 Revitalizing Communities Habitat Broward received a $100,000 Leading the Way Home Program Priority Markets Initiative Grant, a $35,000 Homeownership Grant and a $15,000 Team Member Volunteer Program Grant from Wells Fargo for a revitalization project in Hallandale Beach. Through its participation in Hallandale Beach s Neighborhood Stabilization Program, Habitat Broward acquired and demolished a small, foreclosed multi-family apartment complex that is located in an area targeted for redevelopment. Funding provided by Wells Fargo and other community partners will be used to build seven beautiful, new townhomes that will be sold to low income families in need of decent, affordable housing. In addition to these grants, Habitat Broward was awarded a Wells Fargo UrbanLIFT Grant in the amount of $313,730 to be used to renovate seven townhomes acquired in Oakland Park that had been abandoned by the original developer prior to completion. The finished townhomes will be sold to low income families. In 2013, Wells Fargo committed $463,730 in grants to support revitalization of distressed properties in Broward County. Both of these revitalization projects are in the pre-development phase and will start in the spring of

Nearly Two Decades of Giving Publix Super Markets Charities has a long-standing tradition of supporting Habitat for Humanity throughout their five-state market. They have supported Habitat Broward since 1995, granting more than $800,000 to improve housing opportunities in our community. With these funds, Habitat Broward has empowered 13 families to date to become selfsufficient homeowners in Dania Beach, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Miramar, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach and Unincorporated Broward. Publix has also funded two additional homes in townhome communities that are in the planning phase and will break ground in the near future. As an organization, Publix is committed to serving the homeless and hungry. In doing so, they recognize that to be successful, families must have access to both nutritious food and stable housing. Habitat for Humanity is proud to partner with Publix not only here in Broward County, but across their service area, to eliminate substandard housing. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Publix to build a better Broward one home and family at a time. Perry Ecton, Executive Director Habitat Broward 15

Building Hope and Changing Lives, One Family at a Time The road to homeownership was a long one for Sylvia Adams, and it started when she was a little girl. I grew up in a tiny two-bedroom apartment with my mom and dad, and six brothers and sisters, she says. And my parents were the kind of people that, if somebody didn t have a place to go cousins, nieces, nephews, whatever they took them in, making the family s close quarters even more so. It was cramped, recalls Adams, laughing. A yearning for a space of her own took hold, and held fast throughout her adolescence and early adulthood, when as a single mother of three young children, the desire for her own home became even more intense. I wanted a place that was safe, in a good neighborhood where I could raise my kids and give them something I didn t have when I was growing up. The struggling mom thought she d finally found the answer when she was given the opportunity to rent a house directly from its owners. The plan was to lease the home for a year, with the intention of using the collected rent as a down payment for purchase. The rent placed a huge financial burden on Adams, but she managed to fulfill her end of the deal each and every month. Then, as the twelve-month mark approached, she received crushing news: It was all a scam. They were never going to sell me that house. Devastated, Adams and her children moved into a small apartment in Fort Lauderdale. It would be their home for the next ten years. 17
A decade later, Adams, now a campus security officer for Broward County Public Schools, and her children were sharing their apartment with Adams dad, who had come to live with them after Adams mother passed away from breast cancer. With a home that was bursting at the seams, Adams began to feel a tiny pinprick of hope when a friend mentioned Habitat Broward, and encouraged her to apply. It was such a long wait to even apply, she says. I was pacing back and forth and I almost walked out at one point, but I prayed and I waited and I prayed some more, because I knew that if I were given the opportunity to apply I would be accepted. I just knew it. She was right. Adams future home, made possible by Habitat and very generous sponsorships from Publix and American Express, would take a short eight months to complete, thanks to the family s contributed sweat equity hours and scores of volunteers. It was amazing, says an almost reverential Adams. To see all of those people taking the time to help someone out that they didn t even know; it made me feel real good. And you know, we had a lot of fun building the house together, too! Adams and her family moved into their home in December 2010; Christmas was especially sweet that year. We got to put up the tree in our very own house for the first time, says Adams. The joy was overwhelming. And it is joy she still feels three years later. I grew up in the hood, says Adams, but I wanted to show my children that you can have more. That if you work hard and do what you re supposed to, you can make a good life for yourself. Because of Habitat Broward, my sponsors Publix and American Express and our own hard work, that is what my family has been able to do. Now, I know that my children will always have a place to come home to. This story, Familiar Places, was written by Elisa Chemayne Agostinho, a professional writer and Habitat volunteer. 18

Keys to a New Life Through their generous gifts, Publix Super Markets Charities gives keys to a brand new life to low income families. Before moving into their new homes, Publix s partner families were living in substandard rental housing. Now, they own a simple, decent home of their own that is made affordable through Habitat s interest-free loan. Brick by brick, stone by stone We built a place to call our own Gonna fill it up with laughter Write my happy ever after 'Cause for the first time in my life I'm holding the key To a brand new life waiting on me That's what makes a house a home That's what makes a house a home Publix makes home dedications just a lil bit sweeter for our partner families and guests From A House, A Home, A song specially written for Habitat for Humanity by Anna Wilson 20
Gifts in Kind Culinary experts from Publix Aprons Cooking School have whipped up delicious dishes for a few of Habitat Broward s signature events in recent years. Sliders and other yummy appetizers were enjoyed by guests when the Habitat ReStore celebrated its 10 th anniversary in Publix also donated fruit and hosted a BBQ for the women (and men!) who participated in the 2012 Women Build. 21

Did You KNOW? 43% of working households in South Florida are considered severely burdened by housing costs (the highest rate in the US). For example, a family in Fort Lauderdale spends a greater portion of their income on housing than a comparable family living in New York City or Los Angeles. Federal/state funding for affordable housing in Broward County has decreased by 60% since 2006, making private funding sources of central importance. That in addition to benefitting individual families, Habitat Broward boosts the property tax base by $200K and contributes over $4 million to the local economy annually. Proceeds from our ReStore cover all administrative and fundraising costs, allowing 100% of every sponsorship dollar raised to be used in the construction of homes. The impact of your sponsorship is immediate, but the effects are everlasting. Beyond moving a family into an affordable and stable home, your gift makes the children of Habitat homeowners 116% more likely to graduate college and 59% more likely to become homeowners themselves.
