MISSION CARE Canada s mission is to serve individuals and families in the poorest communities in the world. Drawing strength from our global diversity, resources and experience, we promote innovative solutions and are advocates for global responsibility. We facilitate lasting change by: strengthening capacity for self-help providing economic opportunity delivering relief in emergencies influencing policy decisions at all levels addressing discrimination in all its forms Guided by the aspirations of local communities, we pursue our mission with both excellence and compassion; the people whom we serve deserve nothing less. VISION We seek a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and people live in dignity and security. CARE Canada will be a global force and a partner of choice within a worldwide movement dedicated to ending poverty. We will be known everywhere for our unshakable commitment to the dignity of people.

OUR STORY BEGAN 70 YEARS AGO. The year 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of when CARE began its emergency relief work by delivering CARE Packages to the people of wartorn Europe during and after World War II. The first 20,000 packages reached the battered port of Le Havre, France on May 11, Some 100 million more CARE packages reached people in need during the next two decades, first in Europe and later in Asia and other parts of the developing world. Today, CARE works in more than 80 countries, to provide life-saving assistance during emergencies; create sustainable food, water and nutrition solutions; improve basic health and education; and develop new economic opportunities in the world s poorest communities. 3

WE CARE The Canadians Care campaign is a national volunteer-driven campaign to engage Canada s philanthropic community to raise critical funds, awareness and support for CARE Canada s international development and emergency response initiatives. Led by co-chairs Hon. John P. Manley and Douglas Stollery, the campaign team is made up of Canadians who share CARE Canada s commitment to tackling the underlying causes of poverty and bringing lasting change to the lives of vulnerable people worldwide. 4

Today, we invite you to join CARE Canada in a unique campaign that will truly make a lasting difference in the lives of mothers, children, families and entire communities around the world. 7 CANADIANS CARE Message from the Campaign Co-Chairs Hon. John P. Manley, Campaign Co-Chair, President and CEO of Canadian Council of Chief Executives, and former Deputy Prime Minister of Canada Douglas Stollery, Q.C., Campaign Co-Chair, Counsel to Reynolds Mirth Richards & Farmer LLP Canadians care deeply about the lives of others. We care about children whose lives have been devastated by natural disasters or armed conflict. We care about women and girls who are denied the opportunity to gain an education. We care about families who suffer from malnutrition or infectious diseases. Compassion is part of the fabric of our society. The Canadians Care campaign is an opportunity for all Canadians to show that they care and to make a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in some of the most challenging parts of the world. From delivering emergency CARE Packages to wartorn Europe to spearheading innovative development approaches, CARE has long been trusted to care for the world s most vulnerable people, regardless of religion, nationality or political affiliation. In addition to its ongoing work throughout the developing world, CARE Canada is undertaking several projects under a special funding arrangement with the Government of Canada. These projects seek to provide long-term solutions to hunger and poverty in some of the world s poorest countries. The funding arrangement with the Government of Canada means that for special projects every dollar donated by Canadians is multiplied for greater impact, provided that we act now. Across Canada, people are joining forces to help us meet our ambitious fundraising targets. To succeed, we need the support of Canadians with a strong global conscience and a steadfast determination - Canadians who care enough to make a difference. With your support, CARE Canada s development projects will touch the lives of more than 2.5 million people by 2016 while its emergency work has the potential to reach thousands more during times of crisis. Please join us today. 7

SUPPORT 8

HEALTHY MOMS, HEALTHY BABIES, HEALTHY FUTURE Financial Objective: $2 million by June 2015 YOUR GIFT MULTIPLIES! A healthy mom has the potential to raise a healthy child who may one day lift an entire community out of poverty. CARE Canada has long advocated that fighting poverty means ensuring the needs of women are properly addressed. This is not to the exclusion of men, but with an effort to improve gender equality so both have an opportunity to become self-reliant and thrive. Sadly, ignoring the health of women and girls means a shocking number die each year from complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Over half a million women die each year from pregnancy and childbirth-related causes. Simply becoming a mother should not put a woman s life at serious risk. By our estimation, 90 per cent of maternal deaths can be prevented through simple, cost-effective interventions. Every mother has a right to a safe childbirth. We need your help to realize this vision. CARE Canada s maternal and child health projects are based on the premise that healthy women can be healthy mothers who raise healthy children. Our projects focus on improving health services and education for women while also helping boost the nutrition of mothers and children with the benefits extending across entire communities. Overall, these projects will impact the lives of more than 2.3 million people. In Tanzania, CARE Canada is working to improve the maternal and reproductive health of vulnerable women and adolescent girls in Tabora region, which has the highest maternal mortality rates in the country. This campaign will help: Bring quality health services and equipment closer to the women and girls who need them most; Train health care workers and improve maternal and reproductive services available at health facilities; Empower women and adolescent girls with greater knowledge of their reproductive health; and Build the capacity of regional and national authorities to better respond to the needs of women and adolescent girls. In Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Malawi, CARE Canada is focused on improving the nutrition of mothers and children in areas where chronic malnutrition and maternal and infant mortality rates are high. Your support will: Improve the nutrition practices of mothers and children through local health workers and cooking demonstrations; Increase access to a nutritious and healthy diet through seed communities and backyard gardens; Improve the health and nutrition services available to communities; Address factors that affect the health and nutrition of communities (e.g. water, hygiene and sanitation); and Empower women with a greater voice to make decisions on what food to buy and consume in the household. 9

Small family farms contribute 50% of food grown worldwide. CARE Canada works with families to produce vegetable gardens and staple food crops so they can grow their own healthy food. GROWTH 10

FIGHTING HUNGER ESSENTIAL TO FIGHTING POVERTY Financial Objective: $1.5 million by June 2016 YOUR GIFT MULTIPLIES! You cannot move forward if you re held back by hunger. It is a startling fact that hunger and malnutrition kill more people worldwide than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. According to the United Nations, 842 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. The reasons behind this are varied from not enough food available to not having access to the seeds or tools to grow food or money to pay for a healthy diet. While CARE Canada will provide life-saving food aid in an emergency, we re seeking long-term answers to these endemic problems. Your support is needed to help communities develop sustainable food and nutrition solutions so hungry people can afford the food they need or be better prepared to respond to a poor harvest or changing climate. CARE s LINKAGES Project Across four countries, CARE Canada s multi-faceted program Linking Initiatives, Stakeholders and Knowledge to Achieve Gender-Sensitive Livelihood Security (commonly referred to as LINKAGES) is working to strengthen local economies, increase access to nutritious food and improve equality between women and men. Overall, LINKAGES will reach 147,000 people in Bolivia, Ethiopia, Ghana and Mali. This campaign will help: Improve women s access to and control over food and agricultural resources; Allow farmers, particularly women, to produce more healthy and nutritious food; Whether we re talking about maternal health, access to food or emergency response, engaging communities is central to CARE Canada s approach. We want our results to be sustainable, so it s critical we work with local women and men to continue changing lives well after the project is finished. Work with communities to increase access to healthy food and build a better understanding of the importance of good nutrition; Enhance access to affordable financial services and economic opportunities for local community members, associations and businesses; and Encourage women and men to have a stronger voice in the crafting of economic regulations and policies at a local, regional and national level. Jacquelyn Wright Vice-President of International Programs CARE Canada 11

When Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines in November 2013, CARE s emergency team quickly responded. Days after the storm devastated part of the country, CARE and its local partners were on the ground delivering food aid to survivors. CARE s response later extended to shelter support and livelihood assistance to help families affected by this deadly typhoon rebuild and recover. Here, Nicolas Bardalo hammers a nail into corrugated sheeting provided by CARE on the roof of his new home. RECOVERY 12

READY TO RESPOND IN AN EMERGENCY Financial Objective: $500,000 by June 2016 YOUR GIFT SAVES LIVES! In an emergency, timing is crucial. That s why it is important we have the resources available to respond quickly to deal with major crises. Your gift will allow CARE Canada s rapid response team to help prepare for disaster and respond immediately to a large or small-scale emergency. Whether responding to a famine or supporting refugees fleeing from conflict, CARE Canada s experienced emergency team focuses on ensuring people have enough food to eat, access to clean water and proper sanitation, a roof over their heads, safety from violence, and basic health needs. How do we do it? Monies raised for the Emergency Response Fund are flexible donations used to support all aspects of CARE Canada s humanitarian work. Because the support is not restricted to any one program or country, your help will allow us to quickly direct resources to the most immediate needs when an emergency strikes. Immediate response and long-term recovery CARE is among the first to arrive and the last to leave, helping communities recover and rebuild when disaster strikes. And save more lives. Refugee support Meeting emergency life-saving needs and providing longer-term development assistance, CARE works with refugees, internally-displaced persons and local populations who face the sudden influx of people in their community. A special focus on women and girls Women and girls are particularly vulnerable during an emergency. CARE ensures their unique security, food and health needs are met. Preparing in advance Our teams are on the ground right now working to prepare the most vulnerable communities should a disaster strike. We re proud to be one of the few international organizations in Canada with a deployable team ready to respond at a moment s notice. With your help, we can expand our capacity so we can reach even more people in an emergency. Gillian Barth President and CEO CARE Canada 13

Since 1945, CARE Canada has brought lasting improvements to the lives of millions of people worldwide. This solid track record should give confidence to donors that their gift will make a difference for years to come. Louise Fréchette Chair of CARE Canada Board of Directors and former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations JOIN US We are proud the Canadian government and other institutional partners have trusted CARE Canada for many decades to deliver high-calibre programming. We are prouder still to represent Canada abroad with our work to empower people in some of the world s poorest communities. But if we want our efforts to be sustainable, to truly leave a lasting impact, then we need your support. Mothers deserve an opportunity to hear their baby s first cry. Poverty can be fought one vegetable garden at a time. We all have a collective interest in helping countries rebuild from turmoil. To learn more about the many ways you can support this campaign, contact: Sylvie Madely Vice-President of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications, CARE Canada sylvie.madely@care.ca CARE Canada s Canadians Care campaign is your opportunity to help create a hopeful world, where people live in dignity and have the chance to build a better life for their families and create stronger, empowered communities. 15
