Head coach Michael Burcin (BURsin) was named the men s golf coach at Wisconsin on May 31, 2011, after seven years at the University of South Carolina. The Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style competition for teams of collegiate golfers from the United States and Europe which square off in a threeday match play event. My family and I are excited to come to Madison, Burcin said. Wisconsin is certainly a sleeping giant and I am looking forward to connecting with the golf community in the city and around the state. My No. 1 priority is to recruit the state hard and keep the best players within the borders. If you are able to do that, it usually leads to big things. My goal is to develop a program that competes at a high level in the Big Ten Conference. If you are able to do that, because of the quality of the conference, you set yourself up to be a player on the national scene. In Burcin s time on the men s staff, South Carolina was a major player on the national scene. The Gamecocks made six-straight NCAA regional appearances ( ), including winning the school s first NCAA regional title in They advanced to the NCAA championship three times in Burcin s seven seasons, with their top finish being a share of 11th place in In , Burcin helped South Carolina win a school-record four tournament titles. During Burcin s time at South Carolina, four Gamecocks earned All- America honors and seven earned All-SEC honors. In addition to assisting coaches with day-to-day coaching duties, Burcin s primary role at South Carolina was to implement and coordinate a recruiting program conducive to winning championships. Burcin was also the men s golf liaison for the academic staff, and the team achieved at least a 3.3 grade point average in each semester and combined for a team-record 3.54 GPA in the fall of Before going to South Carolina, Burcin spent seven years as a golf professional in Lancaster, Pa. His last stop in Pennsylvania involved developing an indoor teaching program at a retail golf store in Lancaster. 9 History of Golf at Wisconsin The Coaches Prior to 1922 Wisconsin did not have a varsity golf team, but competition thrived at the club level. The golf club represented the university at some of the Western Conference Championship matches, placing third in 1906 and 1913, and fourth in Golf became a varsity sport in 1922, but Wisconsin did not have a coach until 1926 when Joe Steinauer was appointed for one year. George Levis took over in 1927 for a year, Andy Leith coached in 1928, and Levis returned for Steinauer then returned in 1932 and coached the golf team until his retirement in His dual meet record for 19 years was 100 wins, 61 losses and 6 ties (.617). JOHN JAMIESON IN UW ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME Wisconsin State Junior Golf Champion in 1934, at the age of 15; prominent player in amateur golf circles from Wisconsin State Amateur Golf Champion, 1951 Graduated from the UW Madison with a degree in economics and political science, 1938 Named the University of Wisconsin- Madison Varsity Golf Coach, ; coached the 1957 badger team to its first-ever Big Ten championship John Steinauer John Jamieson Coached three Big Ten medalists in 1952,1955 and 1963; had a co-medalist athlete play in the 1958 NCAA Championship Tournament Five Badger Golf Teams participated in the NCAA tournament during his tenure as a coach Compiled a career coaching record of , (.681) in 18 years Worked tirelessly for 36 years on every phase of the UW-Madison golf course project. His teams placed in the Big Ten s first division five times, including a secondplace finish in 1963 (one stroke behind Minnesota) and third-place finishes in 1952, 1955 and Tom Bennett moved into the head coach position after Jamieson s retirement in He would remain at Wisconsin through seven seasons before being replaced by Dennis Tiziani. Tiziani brought the team into upper division status in the Big Ten, winning back-to-back men s conference titles in 1993 and 1994, UW s first Big Ten titles since Besides the two Wisconsin individuals that advanced to the NCAA championships, he led three squads to the NCAA regional championship, two of which advanced to the national championship.
