4 academics utah Kenneth P. Burbidge Jr. Athletics Academic Center The student in student-hlete got a big boost in spring 2001, when the stunning Kenneth P. Burbidge Jr. Family Athletics Academic Center opened on the U. campus. Designed solely to accommode the U. s varsity student-hletes, the Burbidge Center is without peer in terms of aesthetics, technology and academic service. The 10,000-square-foot facility is already a campus landmark, with its sweeping floor to ceiling, curved glass wall on the two-story north side. Its locion is ideal for the populion it serves: Situed between the U. Norium and the Huntsman Center, the Burbidge Center is central to Utah s classrooms and hletic venues. The full-service academic facility, utilized by all 19 varsity Utah hletic teams, was underwritten by a generous $2 million gift from the Kenneth P. Burbidge Jr. family. The center consolided Utah s hletic-academic efforts, both in terms of computer labs and study space, and academic counseling. The upper level also provides a social ghering place for the student-hletes. Academic Support Programs the U. Study Table Required of all freshman hletes their first semester. Open to all hletes, regardless of year or GPA. Study table is offered both the Burbidge Athletics Academic Center and the Heritage Commons Residence Halls. Testing Center Offers student-hletes informion on possible career choices through the Strong Interest Inventory given to all freshmen in the Life Skills class. Internships The Partnering with U. program offers career mentoring, shadowing and internship opportunities with area businesses. Fifth-Year Senior Program Provides financial assistance to those no longer on hletic scholarship (have finished their four-year hletic career), but who wish to get their degrees. Summer School Financial aid for summer school is available to Ute hletes who meet the criteria. 5 on-campus living University of Utah students live in exquisite surroundings in Heritage Commons, which opened amid gre fanfare in Heritage Commons received world-wide acclaim in 2002 when it served as the Athletes Village during the XIX Olympic Winter and Paralympic Games, hosted by Salt Lake City. The living-learning community, now home to some 3,500 students, is the heart of campus activity and exudes a vibrant, energetic college town mosphere. Game and exercise rooms, computer labs, Internet connections in every room, and a dining room th is open all day and serves up freshly cooked meals on request are some of the reasons behind the School of the Year award delivered by the Intermountain Affilie of College and University Residence Halls. Residence hall students also thrive academically Utah: More than half of them maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Situed in historic Fort Douglas the mouth of Red Butte Canyon and loced on 70 acres of land, the expansive 912,000 square foot residential complex boasts picturesque views of Salt Lake City and the surrounding mountain ranges. Heritage Commons consists of 21 buildings 20 residential and one for dining and support services. Eight of the buildings are apartment style, with 235 one, two and three-bedroom apartments. First-year students live in Geway Heights, a hall with furnished, double semi-suites, an advanced telecommunicions system (voice, video and da), an ethernet connection to the U. student computer system, cable TV connections, a large community lounge, study rooms and indoor bike storage. Each floor has a kitchenette. Chapel Glen is home to both first-year students and upperclassmen and offers the same amenities as Geway Heights, along with a fitness area. Sage Point is reserved for upper division students and has single, double and deluxe suites. Sage Point also has computer and technology labs and an internional area. The U.T.E. program is housed in Chapel Glen and Sage Point. An acronym for Undergradue Tradition of Excellence Program, its goal is to broaden students appreciion for tolering various lifestyles, cultures, titudes and values. Benchmark Plaza is an apartment complex alloced for single students who have earned 60-plus credit hours. Shoreline Ridge, which offers both furnished and unfurnished apartment units, is reserved for students with families and single gradue students. The Chase N. Peterson Heritage Center, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week during peak demand periods, is the hub of activity in the student housing village. It contains a central dining facility th ses 600, a convenience store, computer and technology labs, fitness and game rooms, four multipurpose rooms, a mail center and more. The student village also contains a University Bookstore branch, University Copy Center and the University Guest House, an on-campus hotel. Transportion is another benefit of Heritage Commons. A U of U parking permit allows residents to park close to their hall, but a car is not necessary. Free campus shuttles run every 10 minutes and the Utah Transit Authority and light rail (TRAX), free to U. students, combine to traverse 21 routes to and from campus. TRAX extends to downtown Salt Lake and outlying areas as well. The residence halls are also easily accessible to main campus by foot and are connected via the ste-of-the-art George S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge. 6 administrion/staff Dr. Chris Hill Director of Athletics 19th Year Rutgers ( 72) Dr. Chris Hill, Utah s director of hletics and special assistant to the president of the University of Utah, has carried Utah hletics into nional prominence. Hill was just 37 years old when he was named director of hletics back in October of His vision reaches beyond the hletics department. Since 1998, he has been the special assistant to the U. of U. president and a member of the University s senior administrive cabinet. On a nional level, Hill was the NCAA-appointed chairman of the powerful Championships/Competition Cabinet from He now serves as the Mountain West Conference representive on the NCAA Management Council and is on the Management Council s administrive committee. In , he was elected to the executive committee of the Nional Associion of Collegie Athletics Directors (NACDA). But his biggest strides have come on campus, where his tenure has been charged with capital improvements, an emphasis on studenthlete support, academics, and winning programs. In the March 18 issue of U.S.News & World Report, Utah was ranked among the top 20 hletics programs in the nion, based on winning percentage, graduion re, number of sports and gender equity. Hill is the driving force behind Utah s hletics success and its numerous nional-caliber facilities. His fund-raising efforts reached an internional stage when beautiful $50 million Rice-Eccles Stadium hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games. Also close to Hill s heart is the new Kenneth P. Burbidge Jr. Family Athletics Academic Center. its Degree Completion and Outreach and Community Service Honor Award. As an undergradue, Hill lettered three years and was co-captain of the Rutgers basketball team. His bachelor s degree from Rutgers is in mh educion (1972). He also has a master s in educion (Utah, 1974), and a Ph.D. in educional administrion (Utah, 1982). Hill taught in the University s special educion department from Hill, 54, is married to the former Khy Cronin, a member of the faculty in the U. department of special educion. Hill positioned himself for the top hletics job after two highly successful years as the director of development for the Crimson Club. The New Jersey nive first came to the U. as a gradue assistant basketball coach ( ) under Bill Foster. He was an assistant under Jerry Pimm from Among his many awards are a 1981 Milton Bennion Fellowship, 1984 Utah Recreion Therapy Associion Outstanding Service award and 1996 Utah MS Sportsperson of the Year award. He was a 1998 inductee into the Jersey Shore Hall of Fame. Hill currently serves on the Regence BlueCross BlueShield Board of Directors.
