1 Wrestling DIVISION II Highlights Hometown Notre Dame (Ohio) takes national title: Notre Dame (Ohio) claimed the team title at the 2014 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in emphatic fashion March 15, with four wrestlers winning individual titles. Jonatan Rivera, Eric Burgey, Joey Davis and Garrett Lineberger won for the Falcons, who were competing close to campus at the Cleveland Public Auditorium. Rivera won at 157 pounds with a 5-2 decision over previously unbeaten defending champion Cory Dauphin from Central Oklahoma. Burgey, a senior competing at 165 pounds, won a 4-2 decision over Chris Watson from Central Oklahoma. Burgey becomes a two-time NCAA champion, having won the title at 174 pounds in Sophomore Davis completed his second unbeaten season with a 4-1 victory at 174 pounds over Adam Walters from Findlay. Davis, the 2013 champion at 165 pounds, has a collegiate record of Lineberger, a freshman, defeated Travis McKillop from Pitt-Johnstown with a pin at the 4:54 mark, and was the only wrestler in the tournament to record a pin in the championship finals. Notre Dame (Ohio) head coach Frank Romano guided the Falcons to the Division II championship in the school s second year of NCAA eligibility, and the school s first NCAA title in any sport. The Falcons amassed 99.5 points to beat two-time defending champion Nebraska-Kearney by 35 points. Maryville University finished third with 58.5 points, Ouachita Baptist finished fourth with 56 points and Central Oklahoma rounded out the top five with 54.5 points. The NCAA championship completes a unique double for the Falcons, who also claimed the NWCA National Duals title in January Central Oklahoma senior Casy Rowell defeated defending 133-pound champion Daniel DeShazer of Nebraska-Kearney 3-2 in a gritty overtime contest and was named the meet s Outstanding Wrestler. Kutztown junior Ziad Haddad completed an undefeated season (25-0) with a 5-4 decision over Jacob Mitchell of California Baptist to win the heavyweight class crown. He was named Division II National Wrestler of the Year a week later by a vote by Division II coaches TEAM STANDINGS 1. Notre Dame (OH)... 99½ 2. Nebraska-Kearney... 64½ 3. Maryville (MO)... 58½ 4.
