W Thu March 6 DII Region final - Pima 7:30 Tue-Sat March DII NJCAA Nationals Mesa Community College Women s Basketball TBA Game Notes Another Mesa-Pima Regional Final: For the sixth straight year it will be Mesa versus Pima for the Region I, Division II title. Pima won the first three and MCC has taken the last two. Last Time Out - In a somewhat inconsistent performance, Mesa downed South Mountain, 74-54, to win the regional semi-final. MCC jumped to a 20-4 lead, saw the Cougars close to with two and then opened a 14-point halftime margin. Madi Austin and Peace Amukamara each scored 16. Mariah Willadsen added 13 and Kylie Herd had a career-high 14 rebounds along with eight points. Pima defeated Chandler-Gilbert in its semi-final, 79-65, after being tied at halftime, Melody McLaughlin scored 18 points and Raja Moreno-Ross had 17. Now No. 8: Mesa bounced back to No. 8 in the NJCAA Division II poll with its good showing in the last week of the regular season. Vs. Madi Austin had a career-high 26 points and Mariah Willadsen added 20. For PCC, Felicia Foster led five in double figures with 19 and Rachel Williams scored 15. In February the Aztecs took an OT win as Alicia Jones drained a long three-pointer at the OT buzzer to prevent a second extra period and give Pima a win. She was the only Aztec player in double figures with 26 points. Peace Amukamara paced MCC with 20. Three ACCAC Players of the Week: Mariah Willadsen was named ACCAC Division II Player of the Week three weeks ago. She was the third Mesa player to receive the honor. Peace Amukamara and Madi Austin have also won the award this season. Career scorers: With her first two points in a recent game with Eastern Arizona, Peace Amukamara went over 500 points in her Mesa career. She now has 660. Two of her teammates, Madi Austin (811) and Mariah Willadsen (731) have already gone over the 500 mark, roughly the junior college version of scoring 1,000 in a four-year career. Up Next: The winner moves on to the NJCAA national championship tournament. It will begin March 18 at Jones County in Kansas. 20 Wins, Again: The T-Birds have won 20 games for the sixth consecutive season. Coach Kori Stephenson s teams had previously won at least that many in each of the past five years. Two years ago they were 27-8, won the Regional Division II championship and finished fifth in the NJCAA national tournament. The T-Birds, featuring a very young lineup with four freshman starters, finished the season with a 27-7 record and No. 2 national ranking. After capturing their second straight Region I title they then won their first three games at the NJCAA finals before finally falling. Stephenson is the face of MCC Women s basketball, having served the program as an assistant since She just completed her seventh season as head coach of the T-Birds. She has compiled a record in her seven years and her teams have won at least 20 games for the last five years in a row. Originally from Forsyth, Montana, she graduated from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City, SD in 1998, earning a BA in Interdisciplinary Sciences. As a member of the Hardrocker s women s basketball team, she played for longtime head coach Barb Felderman, earning first-team NAIA All-American honors, three NAIA national tournament appearances and holding the all-time scoring record from with 1,934 points. She had been the top assistant at Mesa since 1999 during which time the Lady Thunderbirds finished seventh in the nation in at Hagerstown, MD and fifth in in Phoenix, fifth in and second this past season. During Stephenson s tenure at Mesa more than 30 players have gone to play at NCAA Division I, II and NAIA schools throughout the country. With extensive recruiting efforts throughout the Valley she has established a range of upcoming talent. Coach Stephenson will look to take her Lady Thunderbirds to the playoffs for the eighth consecutive time this season. Coach Kori lives in Mesa with her husband Brian and their two sons.
