Last year the T-Birds went all the way to the title game before falling to Louisburg, The previous year MCC finished fifth. Last Time Out -In a thriller, the T-Birds pulled out a win over Pima in the sixth consecutive year the two have met for the Region I title. MCC trailed by ten in the first half and then nine in the second period. Down, 64-63, MCC forced a PCC turnover and Peace Amukamara found Madi Austin under the basket with the inbounds pass with 14.1 seconds left for the winning basket. Amukamara, who was named regional MVP for the second straight year, scored a career-high 29 points. Mariah Willadsen added 15. Mercyhurst defeated Jamestown, 66-59, with Brea Forney leading with 19 points and Jalin Steel adding 14. MCC was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the pre-season poll, but lost unexpectedly to Phoenix early in the year. It was Mesa s only Division II loss other than a split with rival Pima, both games in OT. The T-Birds other losses were to DI No. 3 Hutchinson and twice to DI No. 5 Central Arizona, one game in OT and the other by four points. MCC has ten DI victories. Vs. Mercyhurst North East: These two schools have never before met. Three ACCAC Players of the Week: Mariah Willadsen, Peace Amukamara and Madi Austin each were named ACCAC Players of the Week during the season. Player highlights: Madi Austin was named to the all-tournament team at nationals last year along with teammate Nicole Tsosie. She is a first team all-region I choice and has verbally committed to Grand Canyon University. Peace Amukamara, sister of New York Giants defensive back Prince Amukamara, was Region I, DII Player of the Year. She is verbally committed to Arizona State. Mariah Willadsen was a first team all-region I selection and is verbally committed to Northern Arizona University. 20 Wins, Again: The T-Birds have won 20 games for the sixth consecutive season. Coach Kori Stephenson s teams had previously won at least that many in each of the past five years. Two years ago they were 27-8, won the Regional Division II championship and finished fifth in the NJCAA national tournament. The T-Birds, featuring a very young lineup with four freshman starters, finished the season with a 27-7 record and No. 2 national ranking. After capturing their second straight Region I title they then won their first three games at the NJCAA finals before finally falling. Stephenson is the face of MCC Women s basketball, having served the program as an assistant since She just completed her seventh season as head coach of the T-Birds. She has compiled a record in her seven years and her teams have won at least 20 games for the last five years in a row. Originally from Forsyth, Montana, she graduated from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City, SD in 1998, earning a BA in Interdisciplinary Sciences. As a member of the Hardrocker s women s basketball team, she played for longtime head coach Barb Felderman, earning first-team NAIA All-American honors, three NAIA national tournament appearances and holding the all-time scoring record from with 1,934 points. She had been the top assistant at Mesa since 1999 during which time the Lady Thunderbirds finished seventh in the nation in at Hagerstown, MD and fifth in in Phoenix, fifth in and second this past season. During Stephenson s tenure at Mesa more than 30 players have gone to play at NCAA Division I, II and NAIA schools throughout the country. With extensive recruiting efforts throughout the Valley she has established a range of upcoming talent. Coach Stephenson will look to take her Lady Thunderbirds to the playoffs for the eighth consecutive time this season. Coach Kori lives in Mesa with her husband Brian and their two sons.
