John Shimkus (R-Ill.) much-ballyhooed Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act, intended to boost the long-awaited Yucca Mountain waste repository in Nevada, was voted out of the House nearly a year after being introduced. Its chances in the Senate remain uncertain, and a number of other bills on management of the nation s nuclear waste haven t even gotten to a committee vote. Speakers will offer an outlook on these bills chances in the last few month of the current Congress and what might come next. 10:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. State and Local Involvement in Waste Management 12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. Networking Lunch Like politics, radioactive waste is local at least as long as it remains near dozens of communities throughout the United States. Officials from state and local governments will discuss their role in determining how radioactive waste is managed. 1:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m. Consolidated Interim Storage 2:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Networking Break Consent-based siting of nuclear waste as an official policy might be dead, but community assent remains a hotly debated topic. Nevada remains strongly opposed to building the Yucca Mountain repository, while communities in southeastern New Mexico have formally partnered with Holtec International to develop a consolidated interim storage facility for used reactor fuel. Meanwhile, Waste Control Specialists and Orano aim to revive plans for a facility in West Texas.
