2 Cover: A Dodge County girl learns about the importance of saving money. What is Money Smart Week? Dear Friends: OCTOBER Money Smart Week helps people better manage their personal finances. It is a financial literacy campaign that delivers hundreds of educational programs, classes and activities to consumers of all ages and income levels. Financial institutions, non-profit groups, government agencies, schools and libraries work together to carry out these events. These can vary from a class on the basics of buying a home to a fair with booths staffed by organizations offering free financial education services. Launched in Chicago in 2002, Money Smart Weeks are now held in more than 50 small to large cities in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin. In addition, Money Smart Week continues to spread beyond the Midwest in places like Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Nebraska, Washington, Oregon, New Jersey and West Virginia. Bringing together a wide variety of partners to offer classes and programs on money management showcases available educational resources, strengthens private-public partnerships, engages the media and connects people with those who can help them learn. The Chicago Fed coordinates the effort because individuals, communities and the overall economy benefit when consumers are making well-informed decisions about their personal finances. Money Smart Week continues to grow and help people manage their personal finances. We are very proud of the partners efforts in making it such a success. Charles L. Evans, President & Chief Executive Officer, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Congratulations on an outstanding 2010 Money Smart Week Wisconsin! We have much to be proud of on our fifth anniversary. It is amazing that in five years nearly 50,000 Wisconsin citizens of all ages, from young students to retirees, have taken part and improved their personal finance skills. We now have 27 regional planning committees that organize an average of 600 events annually with over 2,800 volunteer partnering organizations statewide. I appreciate your work for financial education! Especially in light of the continuing challenging financial times, I urge you to continue your efforts. There is a strong need, and you are making a real difference. I hope this report energizes you as you plan for the next Money Smart Week. Your spirit of cooperation, unbelievable support, and positive attitude form the heart of the campaign. Your communities greatly benefit from your actions. I know we are all very grateful to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for their outstanding support. It has been a pleasure to serve as your honorary chair for the past several years. I wish you continued success in the years to come. Thank you for your contribution to excellence in financial literacy! Sincerely, Jessica Doyle First Lady of Wisconsin Money Smart Week is a registered service mark of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
