4 Guest of Honor MICHEL R. LUPANT, a retired professor of geography, is the 5th President of the Fédération Internationale des Associations Vexillologiques. An accomplished flag author, he edits the Gaceta de Banderas in collaboration with the Spanish Vexillological Association and prefaced the French Navy Hydrographic Service s Album des Pavillons, the only remaining official flag book still in publication. Professor Lupant founded the Centre Belgo-Européen d'etudes des Drapeaux (Belgian-European Flags Studies Centre) with a flag library and archives considered to be one of the most important in Europe. Professor Lupant was named to the Belgian Order of Merit by King Albert II and was also named Knight of the Cross of Merit, Robert de Caluwé International Heraldry Award in the category of vexillology at Helsinki. He lives in Belgium. Keynote Speaker ROBERT T. MABERRY, JR., PH.D., D.D.S., is author of Texas Flags and was the guest curator for the exhibition Texas Flags: at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He also served as the director of the Historical Flags of Texas Project, a conservation effort sponsored by the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission. Dr. Maberry received his doctorate in history from Texas Christian University, where he has taught U.S. and Civil War history. A practicing dentist as well, he lives in Fort Worth, Texas. 3

6 The Driver Award Created in 1979, the Captain William Driver Award honors the best presentation at a NAVA convention. Named in honor of Captain William Driver, who christened the United States flag Old Glory, the award is generously underwritten by the commercial members of NAVA.The NAVA Executive Board selects the winner based on pre-determined criteria emphasizing originality and accuracy. The award is a certificate accompanied by a honorarium of $250 USD. The winning presentation is usually printed in Raven: A Journal of Vexillology. that established the Lone Star Flag as the national flag of the Republic of Texas.

The design of the NAVA 42 flag is especially appropriate because NAVA 42 celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Lone Star Flag's official

7 Nava 42 Flag For the NAVA 42 flag, the convention committee selected a historical design originally drawn by Peter Krag. The NAVA 42 flag is a rectangular variant of the Texas revenue service flag, which is a square naval auxiliary flag authorized by the 1839 act that established the Lone Star Flag as the national flag of the Republic of Texas. Krag drew the official art for both the Lone Star Flag and the auxiliary naval flags. The design of the NAVA 42 flag is especially appropriate because NAVA 42 celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Lone Star Flag's official re-adoption in The proportions are 2:3.
