1 THE GREEN & GOLD GAZETTE Principal s Message April 2018 Happy Easter! I hope that your Easter celebrations are a time of prayer, family and renewal. For those who get to take a break, I hope that your time off is restful. Noteworthy items: Class Retreats: The Sophomore Class Retreat will be held on campus on April 16 th and the Junior Retreat will be held off campus on April 23 rd. The school expectation is that ALL students attend the retreats. Knowledge Bowl Team: Congrats to the Knowledge Bowl team for their second place finish in the Ventura County competition. Student-Athlete Scholar Recognition: Congratulations to all of our students who compete in athletics. All eighteen teams had a cumulative Grade Point Average over 3.0 for the first semester this year. This is an outstanding accomplishment since seventy five percent of our students participate in sports. Science Fair: Twenty students participating in eight categories received first or second place awards in the Ventura County Science Fair. Congratulations! Re-registration Forms: Class selection forms for next year are overdue. Please turn them in ASAP. Please contact the school if you are planning to attend another school next year. Registration fees are also due at this time. Texas Hold Em Tournament: Our Annual fundraising card playing event will be held on April 14 th either in the parish hall at OLA or the Seraph Athletic Center. 2 Message from the Dean of Curriculum Our March Faculty Meeting began with some interesting information about students and distractions in the classroom using technology. Keeping students on task while on any type of electronic device is a challenge in the classroom, and from what you have told us, at home as well. A lot of times, students think they can keep up with everything educational, personal, technological, through a class period; multi-tasking through class lectures and assignments, group work, Facebook posts, Instagram, texting friends. The idea of multi-tasking is great when trying to accomplish many tasks in a short time period, that don t require you to build a foundation and recall at a later date. Current classroom studies show that students focusing on one task at a time, will then retain that information and be able to apply it at a higher level. Keeping students focused on a subject or concept being taught can become a challenge when competing with social media pop-ups, alerts and texts. We can help students self-monitor themselves, teaching them to stay focused and engaged throughout the lesson, lecture or assignment. Understanding objectives and the meaning of the lesson for a specific period keeps students informed and gives that lesson purpose. Keeping the objective of the lesson interesting and the length to the lesson appropriate, can help students stay on task in the classroom. Asking students to turn off or delete social media, so that these outside technology distractions do not become a distraction in the classroom can help as well. Monitoring this at home while your student is completing homework will support what we are trying to do in the classroom. This is currently an ongoing discussion with the faculty as we aim to enhance and support student learning. We will continue this discussion, and help students use technology to their benefit and to use it responsibly. Below is a graphic taken from Scholastic magazine. 3 Counseling Center News We are so proud of this year s senior class! They will be moving on to a wide variety of colleges and universities around the country. The list of acceptances so far includes: Azusa Pacific University, California State University at Channel Islands, University of San Francisco, Belmont University, UNLV, Humboldt State University, Chico State University, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, University of Northern Colorado, University of Colorado at Boulder, University of California at Santa Barbara, University of California at Irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Santa Cruz, Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona, Johns Hopkins University, Santa Clara University, California Lutheran University, Loyola Marymount University, Northwestern College, ASU, Colorado School of Mines, Alabama, Pepperdine University, Texas Christian University, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Ventura, Moorpark and Santa Barbara City College. As April comes to a close, we will have the complete list (students have until May 1 to commit to a college). SAT/ACT REGISTRATION DATES: Juniors should begin taking the SAT/ACT in the spring. SAT ACT May 5 - Register by April 6 June 9 - Register by May 4 June 2 Register by May 3 July 14 Register by June 15 JUNIORS JUMP START YOUR COLLEGE PLANNING The last half of the junior year is here and that means it s time to spring into action. Ideally, you ve already been thinking about college and investigating your choices, but now is the time for action. Just ask any senior; time goes by very quickly. Continue to take challenging courses. When registering for senior year, don t just sign up for easy courses, because that will hurt your chances for college admission and you ll pay when you arrive at college and can t handle the coursework. Begin to make a preliminary list of colleges you would like to investigate further. Surf the Internet and use college resources in the Counseling Office or Library. Fill out a college comparison worksheet. You can download one at comparison/pdf. Make plans to visit colleges this spring (when classes are in session) or summer. Start or update an academic resume. If you don t have a Social Security number, get one as soon as you can. You ll need it for college applications. If you have one but don t know what it is, ask your parents. Register for the SAT and/or the ACT now. You should be academically ready for it in May and/or June. If not, plan to take it in the fall, as it will be given every month, beginning in September & October. Check into applying to colleges online. Investigate scholarship opportunities. The game was played at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The team has since won a State Championship. Congrats!
