EDUCATING A DIFFERENT KIND OF LAWYER

NOTRE DAME LAW SCHOOL EDUCATING A DIFFERENT KIND OF LAWYER At Notre Dame Law School, students and faculty of diverse backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to broaden their social, spiritual, and personal lives while honing their intellectual and professional skills to serve the good of all. The Notre Dame experience inspires students to examine their studies and practice of law within the context of their responsibilities as a member of the bar, and as a member of various political, social, and faith communities. This perspective encourages robust debate on tough questions of policy, values, and faith both inside and outside of the classroom. Students at Notre Dame Law School not only learn about the technical skills to be successful practicing lawyers they also learn about the values and commitments that shape our laws. NOTRE DAME LAW SCHOOL IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF LAW SCHOOL, EDUCATING A DIFFERENT KIND OF LAWYER. notre dame law 3

THE CURRICULUM JURIS DOCTOR (J.D.) PROGRAM Notre Dame Law School s curriculum integrates rigorous academic standards with an emphasis on ethics and values taught by leading scholars who serve as faculty and mentors. COURSES BLEND OF LEGAL THEORY AND SKILLS-TRAINING COURSES UPPER-DIVISION REQUIREMENTS LEGAL ETHICS, JURISPRUDENCE, SKILLS COURSE, AND WRITING REQUIREMENT J.D. PROGRAM 90 CREDITS What made Notre Dame my top choice was the strong tradition and values that the Law School instills within its students. Although the Law School is known far and wide for its excellence, it is only truly comprehensible upon becoming a student that Notre Dame s mission is carried out in everything that happens on campus. Through the dedication and commitment of faculty, staff, and students, the Notre Dame tradition of ethics, integrity, and education runs as deep as our love of the Blue and Gold. The Notre Dame community has a high standard of ethics that has helped develop and support the extremely close studentteacher relationships. 4 THE CURRICULUM PROGRAMS OF STUDY One reason I chose Notre Dame was to have the opportunity to learn daily from a brilliant, nationally recognized faculty. Their wealth of experience from clerking for the U.S. Supreme Court, to serving within a presidential administration, to holding multiple advanced degrees from acclaimed universities was so impressive to me. And even more impressive were their eager and willing spirits to engage with students outside of the classroom. My favorite course has been Constitutional Law with Professor Kelley. Professor Kelley worked within a presidential administration, and he regularly shared stories of his experiences in the White House. He also clerked for two different Supreme Court justices, so his knowledge of how the Supreme Court actually functions, as well as the culture and relationships among the justices, was really insightful when we read and analyzed cases. student perspective SAMANTHA LYEW Snellville, Ga. 5 THE EXPERIENCE FACULTY I am continuously impressed by the Notre Dame Law School faculty. They are always helpful and never hesitate to take a few moments out of their busy day to help students achieve their goals. All of the faculty intentionally make the time to get to know more about the students. That relationship with the faculty is what has made the difference for me in law school I truly feel as if we are one community. Notre Dame Law School brings a diverse, committed faculty who are not only renowned in their areas of legal expertise, but also have a passion for providing a unique and challenging professional education to their students. This passion for teaching can be seen both inside and outside the classroom, whether through intense legal debate or informal discussions in social settings. The NDLS faculty is a truly one-of-a-kind community of scholars who take pride in educating the future of the profession with values, accountability, and integrity. student perspective LAUREN NOTOLLI Columbia, S.C. A TRULY ONE-OF-A-KIND COMMUNITY OF SCHOLARS 6 notre dame law 37

There are many reasons I chose NDLS, but the most important to me was the school s commitment to forming a different kind of lawyer. I firmly believe that is not a marketing pitch it is a mission statement. It affects every part of the school, from admissions to graduation and beyond. It involves education, service, camaraderie, and opportunities that are second to none. NDLS students study in London, extern in Chicago, provide aid to the indigent, team with the business school to help countries rebuild after war, contribute to human rights, and help build small businesses and that s before graduation! The education, opportunities, and experiences NDLS provides creates lawyers who seek to improve the world, not just get jobs. And who could pass up an opportunity to make a difference in the world? THE EXPERIENCE LEARNING alumni perspective ERIC NICHOLS South Bend, Ind. CLASS OF 2016 Experiential learning is a core component of the Notre Dame Law School curriculum and experience. Experiential programs complement the analytical training of the traditional classroom. Hands-on learning allows students to develop practical skills, to explore potential career paths, to reflect on their personal identity, and to observe how the justice system functions. For students entering in fall 2016 or later, the American Bar Association requires students to complete six credit hours of experiential courses before graduation. 8 notre dame law 39

By participating in Notre Dame s Chicago Program, I gained the best of both worlds: I learned the law in a supportive and challenging academic environment in South Bend, and then was able to apply it and gain practical experience while working in Chicago. I loved having that balance in my law school experience. The Chicago program is unique to Notre Dame because you work full-time, so you are able to take on more responsibilities than part-time externs. For example, during my externship at the U.S. Attorney s Office, I worked on a trial team that allowed me to examine two witnesses in federal district court. It was an enormous opportunity that was available to me because I was in the office every day. THE EXPERIENCE EXTERNSHIPS Notre Dame Law School teaches students to think like lawyers and provides them with myriad opportunities to practice the skills most sought by employers. Notre Dame Law School s broad array of externships allow students to try out virtually any area of law practice and to discover their professional identity by working with real clients, lawyers, and judges. 9 The London program provided the perfect opportunity to explore the outer bounds of the legal profession that are hard to get in a traditional classroom. Beyond just great friendships and once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences, I received a top-notch introduction to international legal subjects I had never thought about before. I toured the Inns of Court, had drinks with Master Mariners, and walked the halls of the legendary Lloyds all for class. Going to London was unquestionably the best decision I have made in law school. alumni perspective ARIELLE SEIDMAN Longmont, Colo. CLASS OF 2015 THE EXPERIENCE INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS Notre Dame Law School values and promotes the global education of legal practices through a variety of opportunities to study and gain practical experience with international law. Whether students wish to practice international law or are simply interested in the field because they recognize that many legal cases have considerations outside of our nation s borders, Notre Dame Law School provides the right kind of education and experiences needed to start a career in international work. Additionally, the South Bend campus houses the Center for Civil and Human Rights, which provides leadership in the field of human rights law and administers the highly respected LL.M. and J.S.D. programs. the concannon programme in london The only ABA-approved, yearlong overseas program offered by an American law school (semester option available as well) Open to NDLS second- and third-year students Study with and learn from prominent American, British, and other European faculty Opportunity to intern with British barristers, solicitors, multinational corporations, and law firms London Law Centre located on Trafalgar Square in Central London summer london Oldest American summer program in London Open to NDLS students and students from other law schools Opportunity to study international and comparative law during a three-week program exchange programs NDLS students have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in: Chile at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile China at Peking University Law School and at Tsinghua University Law School Ireland at the Trinity School of Law Italy at the Università Bocconi Switzerland at the University of Lucerne 14 notre dame law 15 3

What sets Notre Dame apart from other institutions is its vibrant and active alumni network. I remember it being a large feature during Admitted Students Weekend, and after only one year, I could see why. The alumni community here is always looking for ways to give back to the institution they love, frequently offering to give advice and a helping hand to current students. There aren t many law schools that truly carry a national reputation, but NDLS does. That, in large part, is because of the amazing alumni network. student perspective LAVARR BARNETT Ford Heights, Ill. CAREERS A LIFE IN LAW Whether students plan on a future as a litigator, business lawyer, or in public interest work, Notre Dame Law School provides the training and experiential learning opportunities employers are looking for in law school graduates. Thousands of loyal Notre Dame alumni, both of the Law School and of the University, are willing to assist. Our Career Development Office is dedicated to providing students with numerous opportunities throughout the year to hone their job search skills as they identify their desired career path. The office is instrumental in engaging the Notre Dame Lawyer alumni network and arranging on- and off-campus interviews for legal jobs across the country. The Career Development Office is one of the crown jewels of the Law School. Their weekly programming keeps students up to date on all opportunities available to them while their individual counseling meetings provide more personalized advice. From day one, the Career Development staff helps you identify the potential obstacles to a successful legal career but also provides you with the tools for how to overcome them. student perspective ENGAGING THE NOTRE DAME LAWYER ALEXIS MAGUINA Miami, Fla. 16 notre dame law 17 3

I came to Notre Dame with little expectations outside of my academic goals. I predicted that I would spend most of my nights at the library with very little time for a social life. Thankfully, NDLS admits students that not only care about their academics but also care about one another. You don t quite understand the statement Notre Dame family until you experience your first bar review and realize you are not alone in this journey. student perspective 90 MILES TO CHICAGO 30 STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS 21 RESTAURANTS ON CAMPUS The Law School is located at the center of the Notre Dame campus, within steps of the iconic Golden Dome, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and Notre Dame Stadium. 13 APPLY NOTRE DAME LAW SCHOOL Notre Dame Law School is more than a legal education, it is a family. Faculty, staff, and your peers exemplify the values of a different kind of lawyer. From orientation to graduation, you will feel at home knowing that you can count on each and every one to support one another during the crucible that is law school. I have not experienced this level of comradery since leaving the military, and choosing to attend Notre Dame Law School is among the best decisions I have made in life. The Notre Dame Law School Admissions Committee employs a holistic review philosophy to create a class from a large number of highly qualified applicants. We seek multidimensional students with a wide range of talents, backgrounds, experiences, accomplishments, and points of view. We aim to enroll a talented class that will enrich the life of the Law School through their academic skills and leadership abilities.
