1 The Light ACETA The Light Winter Vol. 1 Getting Jazzed: Innovations in Teaching English ACETA s 69 th Annual Conference it seems appropriate to ask humanities scholars statewide to reconsider what we have traditionally defined as English Studies. Auburn University in Montgomery March 3-4, 2017 Over the last decade or so, the field of English studies has been expanding to include texts of all types from the traditional photograph to the Internet meme and from the traditional research essay to the online paper with hyperlinks to video and audio sources. Welcome to this year s ACETA conference, Getting Jazzed: Innovations in Teaching English we hope you are as excited as we are! The conference schedule is on pages 3-5; maps on pages 6 & 7. Be sure to print off the parking pass and park in the main parking lot in front of the Taylor Center. See you there! 2 Alabama Writers Symposium April 20-21, 2017 Every spring Alabama s literary community gathers in Monroeville, Alabama to celebrate the state s rich literary heritage at the Alabama Writers Symposium. Some of Alabama s most celebrated writers and scholars lead discussion sessions, readings and workshops on themes ranging from Literary Gumbo to Murder, Mystery and Mayhem and everything in between. Annual event highlights include the presentation of the Harper Lee Award for Alabama s Distinguished Writer and the Eugene Current-Garcia Award for Alabama s Distinguished Literary Scholar, both made possible through a generous grant from George F. Landegger. Delicious food, art exhibits, music, booksellers and author signings round out the event's entertainment. All events take place in Monroeville on the campus of Coastal Alabama Community, at the Monroeville Community House and the Monroe County Museum downtown. CCCC 2017 March The 2017 Conference on Composition and Communication will be held in Portland, Oregon, March There are special rates for adjuncts, retirees, and veterans. For more information, go to tration NCTE 2017 The National Council of Teachers of English will hold its Annual Convention in St. Louis, Missouri on Nov The theme is Teaching Our Students Today, Tomorrow, Forever: Recapturing Our Voices, Our Agency, Our Mission. Program chair Jocelyn A. Chadwick: As English teachers PreK through graduate school we should all seek the same aim: to inform, to expose, to energize, to foment within our students their lifelong ability and desire to think, write, speak, listen, and act critically, regardless of the obvious and not so obvious impediments.
