1 News & Notes VOLUNTEER NEWSLETTER January 2018 San Diego Cares Blood Drive: Thank you again to our volunteers that were at our first Holiday Blood Drive! Below are a few pictures of the event. Trevor (middle) is one of our blood recipients, due to several open heart surgeries. Coming February 8th! We re having a blood drive on Thursday, February 8th, from 8am-6pm. The location will be announced at a later time, however it will most likely be at our Gateway Donor Center or SDCCU (Qualcomm) Stadium. And we ll have more than 1 shift available since it ll be a long drive. We will have more information soon but if you re interested in signing up now, please contact Mayra to be added to our volunteer list. Gateway Canteen: Please note, our Saturday morning shift is still available until further notice. Also, our Friday afternoon shift is now available, you can sign up with Mayra for any of those shifts.

4 News and Notes Continued In 2018 our focus will be on improving our donors experience through the entire process. We recently asked donors, volunteers and staff what they think the donor is thinking, feeling and doing at 21 touchpoints. Staff identified the top 5 Moments of Truth. Moments of Truth is when a donor decides whether they are in or out. Sixty percent of our donors donate once a year. As mobile greeters you are the first impression and canteen hosts you are the first (when they walk through the door by greeting them) and the last. As you can see you play a vital role in their experience. Acknowledging, engaging and making donors feel welcome is just the beginning. More to come in the New Year! Patient Spotlight Mercedes Mercedes Renee is alive today thanks to the generosity of blood and marrow donors. When she was diagnosed with leukemia, she required regular blood transfusions to keep her alive. She was fortunate to receive a bone marrow transplant that ultimately saved her life. Mercedes now shares her story with the community in the hopes of inspiring others to donate as well. She is a regular volunteer at the San Diego Blood Bank, and she enjoys spending quality time with her Mother and being involved with the Rock Church.

5 Bloodmobile Greeter Schedule - January 2018 The average time for blood drives is approximately 4 to 6 hours. To ensure that your time is respected, you can choose a 4 hour shift. Please indicate if you would like a 4 hour shift when signing up for blood drives. Procedures number listed following the blood drive time corresponds to the donor projection for that particular drive. Please note, the blood drive schedule is subject to change. If you have already signed up for a drive in January it will NOT be listed unless it needs more than one volunteer. If anyone needs a list of what drives they signed up for and/or has any questions please give us a call.
