1 Alabama History Portfolios Over the course of the year you will work on an ongoing Alabama History project. Students will be required to gather information on Alabama to create a portfolio. The cover should be designed by the student. The project will count as one test grade each quarter. There will be four checks during the year and the final project check will be in May. The checks will be graded on content, accuracy, creativity, and neatness. Portfolios should be turned in on time. For each day it is late, 10 points will be deducted from the grade. The portfolio is to be in a separate inch binder with each activity in a sheet protector. Each section should be separated using dividers. Option A Creative cover for the binder Title page- Include: Name, Due Date (final) and teacher s name Table of Contents The cover, title page and table of contents will not be graded until the final check in May. Section I: Maps and Symbols (Due Friday, September 25, 2015) Symbols: State Flag State Flower State Bird State Seal State Tree Each page for a symbol should be set up as follows. Name of Symbol Image of Symbol Drawn or printed and colored Write 2-3 sentences about the symbol Maps: Each map should have a heading. (Due Friday, September 25, 2015) Map of United States with Alabama colored. Map of Alabama - Place a star where Montgomery is located. Section II: History of Alabama (Due Date: Friday, December 4, 2015) Early Indian Tribes Choose 3 of the Early Indian Tribes: Paleo Indians, Archaic Indians, Woodland Indians, Mississippian Indians, Cherokee Indians, Creek Indians, Choctaw Indians, or Chickasaw Indians. Write 2-3 paragraphs about the tribe. Include information about: customs, where in Alabama they settled, foods, weapons, and any other interesting facts about the tribe. Include a picture to go with the paragraph. Include a map of the location of Indian villages. Show at least two for each Indian Tribe - Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, and Chickasaw - a total of eight villages. This information can be found on page 78. Do not make a photocopy of the map from the book. Use a blank map of Alabama and mark at least two tribal locations for each tribe. Include a map that shows the Indian Lands in Alabama. This can be found on page 57.Do not photocopy from textbook, use a blank copy of and color the regions.

2 Alabama Becomes a State Chapter 3 (Due Date: Friday, December 4, 2015) Write an explanation of how and when Alabama became a state. Capitals of Alabama Chapter 3 (Due Date: Friday, December 4, 2015) Make a list of the different capitals. Include the name of the city, and the time span that the city was the capital. Map showing the location of each of the previous capitals. Mark the location and tell when it was the capital. Section III: Notable Alabamians (Due Date: Friday, February 19, 2016) There are many notable faces from our great state. Research eight famous Alabamians. Identify each person you select and write a paragraph about him/her. Include information such as: where they were born, what they are known for, and important events in their life. Include pictures with a description. Pictures can be drawn or printed from the computer. Name Written information about Alabamian. Picture of Alabamian Section IV: Due Date: Friday, February 19, 2016 State Capital Include a picture of the capital city and the date that it became the capital. Find pictures of important landmarks in Montgomery. Include at least two in your binder. Name the landmark and include a picture. Local Government Mayor of Montgomery List the name of the Mayor of Montgomery and include a picture. City Council List the members of the City Council and include a picture. Section V: Agriculture and Industry Chapter 12 ( Due Date: Friday, May 6, 2016) Choose one agricultural product that is important to Alabama. Name the product. Tell where the product is found (grown or raised). Write one-two paragraphs telling why the product is important to the state and how it is used. Draw a picture of the product. Draw an outline of the state of Alabama, and place pictures in the correct location to stand for agriculture found in the state. Items 1-4 can be done on the same page. 3 Section VI: Landmarks ( Due Date: Friday, May 6, 2016) Visit two famous Alabama Landmarks. Write two-three paragraphs about the landmark. Tell what you saw while there and what you learned. As you write about what you learned you should address the importance the landmark plays in the history of Alabama. Include brochures and any other information from the landmarks. Some landmarks will not have brochures; you can include any other information that you might know or come across about the location. Include at least one picture of yourself at the landmark. See list of landmarks, after option B, for ideas. Each should be done on a separate page. Name of Landmark Two-three paragraphs about the landmark. Wording should be in each student s own words. 50 points will be deducted for articles printed directly from the computer.) 4 Option B Option B is to visit eight famous landmarks in Alabama, collect brochures, take pictures, and write a summary of what you learned and what you saw at each site. A sample of landmarks is listed below. The landmark visits must be placed in a separate inch binder in in the order they were visited. The pages must be put in clear, plastic page dividers. Each visit should be separated with a divider. Binder Requirements: Creative cover for the binder Title page- Include: Name, Due Date (final) and teacher s name Table of Contents Each landmark visit should be documented as follows: 2 complete paragraphs must be written based on the experience. The paragraphs must be at least 5 complete sentences each. The first paragraph should be what the student saw there, and the second paragraph should include what was learned. As they write about what they learned they should address the importance the landmark plays in the history of Alabama. At least one picture must be taken of the child at the particular landmark. Brochures and other information provided by the landmark must be turned in with the assignment. Some landmarks will not have brochures; you can include any other information that you might know or come across about the location. (Old Alabama Town November & Department of Archives and History usually in September or October scheduled by the district so I don t have the date yet.)
