1 2017 Qualifying Competitions Central Area Qualifying Competition SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 2017 at HUMBER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY and ADVANCED LEARNING General Information Located in Toronto, Ontario, Humber Institute of Technology, North Campus, will be the host college of the Central Area Qualifying Competition, in which the following school boards are allocated: Durham Catholic District School Board Durham District School Board Peel District School Board Toronto Catholic District School Board Toronto District School Board (All Quadrants) York Catholic District School Board York Region District School Board Humber College Institute of Technology North Campus is easily accessible from Highway 401, and the following map will assist participants in locating the campus: A North Campus map of Humber College Institute of Technology is provided at the end of this document. LOCATIONS OF ACTIVITIES (all rooms subject to change): Parking: Free parking is provided. Please enter through Driveway A, and proceed to Lot #1 Competitor Sign-in: The Concourse (North Campus) Host College Presentation: The Lecture Theatre (Room E135) (North Campus) Awards Presentation: The Lecture Theatre (Room E135) (North Campus) Lunch: Lunch for competitors, contest committee members and judges will be delivered to the contest sites. 2 Central Area Qualifying Competition Agenda of the Day (all rooms subject to change) 8:30-9:00 a.m. Sign-in and Announcements (all contests) To occur in the Concourse (see enclosed map) Mike Auchincloss Associate Dean-School of Applied Technology Welcoming Remarks 9:00 a.m. Technical Committees lead competitors to contest sites Following the morning announcements, Welding competitors are to make their own way to the Centre for Trades and Technology, 110 Carrier Drive (see map on p. 6) 9:10-9:30 a.m. Competitor orientation at contest sites 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Contests 12:00-12:30 p.m. Lunch Lunch will be delivered to competitors at their contest site 12:30-3:00 p.m. Contests continue 3:00-4:30 p.m. Final Judging and Results Compilation Judging completed during this time Results submitted to Skills Ontario staff Skills Ontario staff perform final results tabulation 3:30-4:00 p.m. General Feedback Session for competitors Locations TBA 4:00 p.m. Presentation by Host College To be held in the Lecture Theatre (Room E135) (see enclosed map) *5:30 p.m. Awards Presentation and Advancement Meeting To be held in the Lecture Theatre (Room E135) A brief advancement meeting for those competitors moving on to the Skills Ontario Competition will immediately follow presentation *Please note that the start time of the awards presentation is based on when results are verified and finalized should this be completed earlier than 5:30, staff will make an effort to begin the presentation earlier, but this will be a last minute adjustment. As such, please try to be near by the awards presentation location prior to 5:30 in case an earlier start is possible Humber General Information Page 2 of 7

3 ADVANCEMENT FROM QUALIFYING COMPETITIONS TO SKILLS ONTARIO COMPETITION Advancement to the Skills Ontario Competition for any contest is limited to one ribbon winner per school board per contest. Competitors must also achieve a final score of at least 60% to receive any ribbon. The following numbers of competitors from the Central Area Qualifying Competition are eligible to advance to the 2017 Skills Ontario Competition, taking place May 1-3, 2017 in Toronto: 2D Computer Character Animation (Team of 2) 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd Carpentry Individual 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd Culinary Arts 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd Small Powered Equipment 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd T.V. Video Production (Team of 2) 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd Welding 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd NEW!! Advancement to the Skills Ontario Competition for all Qualifying Competition contests is limited to one ribbon winner per school board per contest at the event. After the event, wildcard spaces will be allocated to the remainder of the top placing competitors/teams regardless of location or existing school board representation. TEACHERS/PARENTS All teachers and parents attending the Qualifying Competitions will be able to purchase lunch at Java Jazz (on campus). In addition, the North Campus of Humber is a short drive to a variety of restaurants. Please see map on page 4 of this document for a list and locations of restaurants.
