7 Attending Arizona State University was the best decision of my life. There was something about ASU that I just had to stay home for. Dirk Koetter is one of the best coaches I have ever learned from. Not only did he teach me the game of football, but he also taught me the game of life. He developed me into a complete player and a complete person. Left tackle Levi Jones, a walk-on who went on to become a first-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals, visits with head coach Dirk Koetter and former defensive coordinator Brent Guy. -- Terrell Suggs, Former ASU Defensive End Baltimore Ravens Tight end Todd Heap and Terrell Suggs, both first- round draft picks by the Baltimore Ravens, found a moment to reminisce on their playing days at Arizona State. Over 100 former Sun Devils returned to campus for the Washington State game last year as ASU retired Pat Tillman s No. 42 jersey. Walk-Ons at ASU Arizona State has a long tradition of walk-ons who have earned their scholarship and gone onto successful careers in professional football. An Academic All-American and three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection, Tillman graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University s W.P. Carey School of Business with a B.S. in marketing on Dec. 19, Tillman s No. 42 jersey was retired at halftime of the Washington State game last season and Pat Tillman Sr. visited the locker room after the game. 18 Grayling Love (with his mother, Cathy) was a 2005 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete. Love has already earned his undergraduate degree in finance and was one of just two players in the Pac-10 to earn first-team all-league honors on the field and in the classroom last year. More than 20 Sun Devils have graduated in the last three years, including seven student-athletes on the 2005 roster who have already earned their undergraduate degrees. 18 ARIZONA STATE FOOTBALL 2005

19 ASU is the only school in the nation to honor its student-athletes for academic performance with patches on the players jerseys. A school-record total of 41 student athletes were named Scholar Ballers for turning in GPA s of 3.0 or higher last year. Skyler Fulton, who signed as a free agent with the Indianapolis Colts, earned his degree in elementary education in Arizona State has some of the finest academic facilities in the country with numerous study and tutoring rooms on the second floor of the Carson Center. The APS Learning Center features 44 computers for student athletes to use, and the Norris Quiet Study, provides space for intense study in a library-like setting. In addition to being a student and athlete, Sun Devils also engage in several hours of community outreach each semester. Past projects have included community clean- up days, book and food drives, speaking at schools, and volunteering at the MS Walk on the Wild Side in 2002 and Wide receiver Michael Jones works with tutor Corinne Corte, one of the many tutors, managers and academic coordinators in the Student-Athlete Development department available to the Sun Devil football student-athletes throughout their careers. 20 Nadine & Ed Carson Student-Athlete Center The Nadine and Ed Carson Student- Athlete Center gives Arizona State one of the finest student-athlete centers in the country. Located in the south end of Sun Devil Stadium and completely renovated in 2003, the $28 million, 165,000-square-foot Carson Center houses the entire athletic department and allows a student-athlete to accomplish everything he needs to do in a given day from meeting with an academic adviser to taping and treatment to get ready for practice without leaving the building. 21 Lattie & Elva Coor Student-Athlete Study Lounge The Wally Kelly Student-Athlete Lounge features three big-screen televisions, PlayStation video games, plush leather couches and chairs and a pool table and is the perfect place for student-athletes to mingle and relax between academic meeting, classes, treatment and practice. The suite features offices for the coaches, 10 position and staff meeting rooms and the 150-seat Dutson Theater, which can house the entire football team at one time. Student-athletes and coaches can also watch game film in every meeting room through a closed intranet set system. ARIZONA STATE FOOTBALL

22 Arizona State has one of the finest weight rooms in the country in the state-of-the-art Nap and Barbara Lawrence Strength and Conditioning Center. The weight room features 16,000 square feet of weight equipment, cardio machines and a 40-yard track in addition to a nutrition area. It includes $650,000 in equipment, including 24 multi-station Powerlift units, which include 660 pounds of Olympic bumper plates as well as Olympic and Powerlift bars. Joe Kenn, the Director of ASU s Sports Performance program, was the 2002 National Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year as voted on by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Kenn and his staff help prepare the Sun Devils for the mental and physical demands of top athletic performance with an Athletic Based Training program geared specifically to the game of football. Our facilities and coaches are as good as you re going to find anywhere in the country. As a player, you have the opportunity to do everything that you ever wanted to accomplish in the weight room. Our workouts are player-and position-specific which is awesome because you are working out to make yourself better as a football player, not just to work out. -Former Sun Devil Skyler Fulton, Indianapolis Colts free agent signee 22 ARIZONA STATE FOOTBALL 2005

23 The facilities at ASU are probably unmatched by any others in the country, as well as the dedication and commitment that the treatment and weight room staff have for the athletes. My own personal growth and dramatic increase in both speed and strength are a testament to Joe Kenn, his staff and the sports performance program at Arizona State Former Sun Devil Drew Hodgdon, Houston Texans draft pick Twenty eight Sun Devils were named Hard Hat Players in 2005 for their dedication and hard work during ASU s Winter Developmental Program. Grayling Love and Jordan Hill shared Hard Hat co-champion honors. I tell all of our recruits that maybe the most important person in a college program is the strength and conditioning coach because you work with him every single day. At ASU, we not only have the best weight room in the country according to Sports Illustrated, but we also have the top strength coach in the country in Joe Big House Kenn, as voted on by his peers. The results we get from our strength program speak for themselves. I could not be happier with what we are doing in this area of the overall program. ASU s weight room was featured in Sports Illustrated as the top weight room in the country in the Ultimate Facilities section of its 2002 College Football Preview issue. -Head Coach Dirk Koetter ARIZONA STATE FOOTBALL

28 Having worked with Dirk Koetter for seven years, I have a hard time believing that there is any better football mind, at any level, than Dirk s. Andy Reid, Head Coach, Philadelphia Eagles Coach Koetter is a great person and he helped me grow as a man. He was always there for me. ASU is a great place to have the college experience. It is a beautiful place to live. The teammates I met here will be friends for life. I would not have changed my decision to attend Arizona State University for anything. Jimmy Verdon, Former ASU Defensive End, New Orleans Saints I think that watching Dirk s offense he is on the cutting edge in college football in terms of the passing game. I love the multiplicity of what he does. It also happens that he has stepped up his defense as well. He s done a terrific job at Arizona State. Mike Martz, Head Coach, St. Louis Rams 28 Dirk is doing a fine job at a high profile institution in Arizona State University. He s done a great job of identifying fine players and has properly identified the right people, especially the right kind of player to compete well in the Pac-10. Marvin Lewis, Head Coach Cincinnati Bengals Coach Koetter was able to prepare me for the NFL at the collegiate level. His system asks a lot of quarterbacks, and all quarterbacks should want that opportunity. He was always there for me when I needed the best advice. ASU provided me the opportunity to receive an education as well as play the great game of football. Tempe is a great town with great fans. Knowing what I know now, I would not have gone to school anywhere else. Andrew Walter, Former ASU Quarterback, Oakland Raiders I have as high a regard for Dirk as any coach I have been around. I played for Dirk in high school and a lot of the knowledge of the game of football I have is based upon what I learned from him. Merrill Hoge, ESPN NFL Analyst and former NFL fullback For quite a few years now, there have been whispers in the football community that Dirk Koetter was a rising star in the coaching ranks. They re not whispering anymore. Koetter has arrived and the secret s out. Chris Mortensen, ESPN NFL Analyst Coach Koetter s offensive system was great for showcasing my talents as a wide receiver. He helped me grow as a person. The ASU environment was the perfect place for a student-athlete. I was a local product and attending ASU and playing in front of the hometown fans was the best decision I ever made. Shaun McDonald, Former ASU Wide Receiver, St. Louis Rams I believe Dirk Koetter has all of the characteristics to be one of the next outstanding coaches in football, period. Dan Henning, Offensive Coordinator Quarterbacks Coach, Carolina Panthers; former Head Coach, Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers, Boston College Dirk Koetter is the total package. While he s a brilliant offensive mind, his knowledge of the defensive side is excellent. His recruiting skills are among the best in the country. Mike Gottfried, ESPN College Football Analyst Dirk has brought a renewed sense of energy and commitment to the program. He s a coach that people have an eye on. As a former quarterback, I love the fact that he s aggressive offensively and is always in the attack mode. He has transferred his youth and enthusiasm into the program Mark Malone, Former ASU Quarterback, ESPN NFL Analyst Dirk Koetter is nothing but great, because he s an Idaho boy. He s a great coach and is doing a great job at my alma mater. Jake Plummer, Former ASU Quarterback, Quarterback, Denver Broncos
