2 1. A Report on IPR awareness program conducted by PIC-KSCST at Bapuji Institute of Technology, Davanagere on 6 th April,. Patent Information Centre conducted a half day IPR awareness program at Bapuji Institute of Technology, Davanagere Dr.B.E.Rangaswamy, Dean R&D and HOD of Department of Biotechnology, initiated and coordinated the program. The first technical session was presented by Mr.C.R Pradeep, who initially talked about KSCST and its ongoing projects and activities. He highlighted about the SPP program and the IPR implications on the SPP Projects. He also highlighted the activities of PIC. Later he began the technical presentation on Introduction to IPR Spectrum for about 45 minutes. The session was also followed by Q&A. The Second session was delivered by Mr. Madhusudhan, on Prior Art, drafting and Patenting Mechanism to Indian Patent Law. The session went for about one and half hour. Later, three faculty members who were curious to know about patenting discussed about their projects being supported by the college. The Workshop was concluded with vote of thanks by Mr.Niranjan.MN. 3 2. a Report on Workshop to commemorate World IP Day on 26 th April, at the IP Cell of Acharya Institute of Technology, Bengaluru. Patent Information Centre in collaboration with Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC) conducted a half day IPR program at Acharya Institute of Technology, Bangalore to celebrate the World IP Day. Dr.Iqbal Ahmed, Deputy Director, Training initiated and coordinated the program with KSCST and VTPC. A brief inaugural function was held to begin the event. Dr.Iqbal Ahmed welcomed the participants, and guests, speakers from KSCST and VTPC. He highlighted the initiation of the IP Cell and thanked KSCST and VTPC for their support in the same. He also mentioned that few innovative projects are already in the pipeline to proceed for applying Patent. It was also mentioned that the IP Policy of the institution was almost in the final stages. The Principal of Acharya Pharmacy College Dr.Goli, spoke briefly, about the importance of IPR especially Patent in the present world and appreciated KSCST s role to spread the concept of IPR and the support for their IP Cell which as initiated last year. Mr.C.R. Pradeep was the guest of honour and talked about importance of IPR Day. He mentioned about the sustainability of the IP Cell, with regular guest lectures and workshops. He also pointed out that the final year Engineering projects, which are really patent worthy and not able to continue in the concept or prototype, to be documented in the IP Cell library. Such projects can be taken forward by seniors or outside start ups or incubation centres for commercialisation etc. Mr.Pradeep also suggested locating separate budget for the activities of the IP Cell. The first technical session was presented by Ms.Bhavya.K.B, on Introduction to IPR Spectrum for about 45 minutes. The session was also followed by Q&A. The Second session was delivered by Ms.Brinda Varma, on IPR issues w.r.t Transnational Research.The session was for about one hour. Later, three faculty members who were curious to know about collaboration agreements with the college, and discussed about their projects. The third session was delivered by Mr.V.Raghuram, on Technology and IP Commercialisation for about 45 minutes followed by Q&A. Senior faculty members posed questions on Commercial aspects of innovated projects from the colleges. 3

A Report on the visit to BNM Institute of Technology, Banashankari by Patent Information Centre (PIC), KSCST to assess the Project Prototypes with regard to IP and Commercialization conducted on 17 th May. Dr.Jayashree HOD CSE of BNMIT invited PIC, KSCST to visit the exhibits of the prototype of products that was developed by the students of few departments of the college. The theme of the Exhibited prototypes developed by the students was mainly for the Especially able persons. PIC staff was also accompanied by Mr.Shashidhara of GIZ organisation. The main objective of PIC and GIZ to visit the exhibits was to guide the students to take their Project further for commercialisation or think in view of IP value, in case the concepts are Patent worthy or can proceed with Registration of copyright, design etc. There were totally about 25 prototypes displayed at the exhibition Mr. Shashidhar will be guiding the students with a view to commercialise the product and also try to link the project with MSME s (mainly electronics industry) to proceed further in improving or technical advancement related to industries It was observed that most of the prototype were at the initial stages or half done.the project and the prototypes were developed by students from 2 nd Semester to 8 th semester. This is an advantage so that the project can be continued further during their study period.the exhibited prototypes will be shortlisted by PIC and GIZ,keeping in view the IP and commercialisation aspects. It is suggested to invite students /guides of the shortlisted Projects to KSCST for a detail presentation which will be assessed by the subject experts. Report on IPR Workshop for Incubation centres and Start ups held on 21st June at Choksi Hall, Indian Institute of Science campus, Bengaluru The Patent Information Centre of Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology (KSCST), Department of Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India jointly organised a one day workshop on IPR for Start ups, Incubation Centres, and MSMEs at Choksi Hall, Indian Institute of Science campus, Bangalore on 21st June. The workshop aimed to provide, the basic information and awareness on IPR spectrum from innovation to Commercialization. Participants from Start Ups, Incubations Centres, Faculty members from Engineering Colleges and MSMEs were invited. This workshop covered a general spectrum on the following topics; *Introduction to IPR, Importance of IPR for Start ups. *Evaluation of Inventions for setting up of business. *Legal aspects in new entities *Focus on Commercialization, funding for new Inventions/Start ups. Technical speakers from National Law School India University, Incubation centre from Engineering College, Patent Attorney and Senior Consultant from Start up Karnataka, GOK were invited for the Workshop. The delegates participated in the workshop were from Engineering Colleges such as SJCIT, SJC, MSRIT and Acharya Institute of Technology. About 9 Start-ups from IISc also participated. Participants from MSMEs such as AWAKE, Fluxgen and Healthcare were also present. The Workshop began with the welcome address by Prof.S. Subramanian, Secretary, KSCST. Prof.S. Subramanian gave a brief welcome address, welcoming the dignitaries on the dais and all the delegates. Inauguration by Prof. T. Ramakrishna, Chair Professor, IPR, National Law School of India University, and Bangalore inaugurated the workshop by lighting the lamp, with the inaugural speech. He mentioned about the integration of IPR in different domains and the latest global development in IPR. He also mentioned about the Patents scenario in China with examples. It was mentioned that Start ups to give more importance to patents, copyright, and Design. Prof.B.Gurumoorthy, the Chief Guest for the workshop is the Chief Executive, Society for Innovation and Development, IISc. Bangalore. He briefly addressed the gathering by mentioning the importance of IPR for manufacturing sector. He also mentioned the importance of Incubation Centre for start-ups. He quoted that Start ups in S&T sectors filed patents from 40 to 60%. He mentioned the importance of patent search before filing for novelty and said that patent gives right to transact, exploit and defend. 7
8 The Guest of Honour for the workshop was Mr.Anil.A.Uppin, MD, and Karnataka Council for Technological Up-gradation, Department of Industries and Commerce, GoK. Mr. Anil Uppin mentioned the Karnataka State IPR Policy which is being drafted in collaboration with NLSIU. He said about 84 inventors were supported financially by KCTU for patent filing. He gave practical examples in start ups by quoting the instance of Dosa making machine which gained popularity in a short time. He also mentioned that an amount up to Rs.75lakhs is being supported to promote women incubators/start-ups. He said KCTU has assisted 90 colleges out of which 27 projects were selected for assistance. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr.S.G.Sreekanteswara Swamy, Executive Secretary of KSCST. He thanked the dignitaries on the stage for their excellent speech involving good information and advices to the participants. He thanked the participants from different domain of industries and start-ups along with the organisers. 11 5. a Report on IPR Entrepreneurship Development program conducted by PIC at Acharya Business School, Bengaluru Patent Information Centre jointly with Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC) conducted a one day IPR Entrepreneurship Development program at Acharya Business School, Bangalore on 18 th July,. Prof. Anil, MBA department initiated and coordinated the program. A brief inaugural function was held where; Prof. Anil introduced the technical speakers. The Director Dr.Venkatesh spoke briefly, about the importance of IPR and entrepreneurship in the present world and appreciated KSCST and VTPC role to spread the concept of IPR. Smt.Prabhavathi Rao, Program Co-ordinator, VTPC Spoke about IP and Entrepreneurship and Key Initiatives from VTPC, Karnataka. Shri.C.R.Pradeep, co-ordinator spoke about Key initiatives at KSCST in IP Promotion. He highlighted about the SPP program and the IPR implications on the SPP Projects. He also highlighted the activities of PIC. The first technical session was presented by Ms.Bhavya, with the technical presentation on Introduction to IPR Spectrum for about 45 minutes. The session was also followed by Q&A. The second session was delivered by Shri.Sudeedra Koushik, Director, Prasu and Smt. Pragya Dixit, Director Prasu with the presentation on The Entrepreneurship Journey The session went for about one and half hour. Later the session was ended by an activity based interactive session. The third session was delivered by Dr.Arvind Vishwanathan, IPR & Technology consultant on IP and Entrepreneurship: Key Insights, core focus of start-ups and case studies. The fourth session was an Interactive session with a successful Innovator Shri.Nivedan Nempe, Innovator & Founder, Mystic Aromas shared his success stories in the ideation and innovation journey. Few students also posed questions mainly on basics of IPR, innovation, start ups and funds for starting start-ups etc.the program was attended by mainly by graduate students.
