1 RESEARCH AND ENTERPRISE SERVICES INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY MANAGER (Maternity Cover) Ref: ALC247 The Post The post-holder will specialise in the delivery of services relating to UEA intellectual property including technology transfer via licensing, spin-out and consultancy activities. The precise duties will be agreed in discussion with the Manager. Person Specification The person specification for this post is attached as Appendix B. GENERAL Salary Salary will be 38,907 to 45,053 per annum, on Grade 8 on the single salary spine. The normal expectation is that starting salary will be at the minimum of the advertised salary scale. Starting date The post is available from April 2014 on a full-time basis for a fixed term period to cover the Maternity leave of the current post holder. This appointment will be terminated with a minimum of 4 weeks notice. 2 Relocation Expenses Relocation expenses are reimbursable under certain conditions. Residence The University is strongly committed to providing an excellent student experience and research environment, and it is expected that all staff will be available on campus to carry out their duties during the working week in support of these goals. Absences for significant periods are by agreement with the Head of School or Head of Division. Annual Leave Entitlement There is an annual holiday entitlement of six weeks plus statutory (8 days) and customary (6 days) holidays. Superannuation The post is superannuable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme. 5 APPENDIX A Role Title: Intellectual Property Manager Grade: 8 School/Division: Reporting to: Research and Enterprise Services (REN) Assistant Director of Research and Enterprise Services Role function/purpose: The post-holder will specialise in the delivery of services relating to UEA intellectual property including technology transfer via licensing, spin-out and consultancy activities. The post holder will have a particular focus on the transfer of technology through licensing but is also likely to have a role to play in the formation and support of spin-out companies particularly when UEA intellectual property is being licensed or assigned to these new entities. The post holder will be expected to work as part of a project team delivering successful commercial outcomes and to contribute to the active management of UEA s intellectual property to generate economic and societal impact. Key Responsibilities Management of a licensing/commercialisation project caseload o Developing commercialisation project plans. o Actions with respect to patent and other deadlines. o Dissemination of patent status to commercialisation project teams (including inventors). o Liaise with specialist legal service providers e.g. patent attorneys. o Maintaining appropriate commercial project files. o Identifying, engaging, reaching agreement with and monitoring relationships with licensees. Delivery of services relating to UEA intellectual property (IP)/licensing/transfer o Providing specialist advice to academic and other staff on IP issues including protection of IP, patenting etc. o IP awareness raising for staff. o IP due diligence for commercialisation projects contractual analysis/3 rd party interests/freedom to operate investigations. o Drafting, advising and negotiating/renegotiating IP clauses/licenses in research contracts and collaboration agreements. o Working within Commercialisation Project Teams to identify and evaluate the potential of UEA IP to create economic and societal impact. o The provision of licensing/spin-out services to academics o Managing external relationships with licensees/investors/commercial partners. o Identifying projects for possible proof-of-concept, translational and seed-corn funding applications and assisting in preparing bids in collaboration with academics. o License/option/assignment deal structuring and agreement drafting.
6 o Preparing plans for spin-out formation and early stage support for spin-out companies. o Providing information for and acting on requests from patent agents. o Maintaining and updating UEA s technology offerings on appropriate external networks and websites. o General divisional duties as agreed by the Assistant Director Research and Enterprise Services. Other o Assisting in budget setting for IP protection expenditure. o Providing draft forecasts of income from licensing. o Taking part in promotional events for UEA. o Advise on IP clauses/licenses in research contracts. o Assist in the protection of the Universities IP by putting in place appropriate non-disclosure agreements and material transfer agreements with other parties. o Other Office responsibilities that may arise from time-to-time. Key Contacts and Communication The post holder will communicate regularly (both formally and informally) with colleagues in REN and at all levels within UEA and commercial and public sector partner organisations. He or she will forge and manage commercial relationships between academics at UEA and external organisations of all kinds and at all levels of seniority, drawing on persuasive communication, and be able to offer clients a consistent, high-quality and professional service. Complexity, problem solving and decision making The role involves the management of a number of strands of activity engaging with a wide range of internal and external clients. A large number of cases will be overseen at any given time and these contain complex legal and commercial issues. The post holder will typically work with other members of the Commercialisation team when working on large-scale or particularly complex projects. Prioritisation, project management and team working are therefore key issues. Decisions and recommendations will be made on commercialisation/licensing strategies for individual cases, e.g. whether to license/transfer, contractual terms, risk analysis. Decisions with wide reaching implications for UEA will be referred upwards. January 2014

Substantial experience of working in a similar or transferable role Experience in identifying and developing opportunities for commercial application across a broad range of sectors and promote opportunities to potential commercial partners Experience of initiating and fostering effective networks and relationships in order to forge agreements or bring benefit to an organisation Experience of working closely with staff at all levels across an organisation Previous experience of working at the interface of academia and industry A higher degree in a relevant subject Experience/knowledge of company formation Experience/knowledge of winning venture capital funds Skills & Knowledge Special Circumstances Demonstrable communication skills in English language Good working knowledge of intellectual property rules and able to manage the patenting and licensing process end-toend Able to draft, assess and negotiate legal agreements Able to conduct due diligence and market research Good communications and influencing skills Good project management skills Good standard office IT and database skills Technical insight to understand expertise of staff in working in different disciplines The post may require some travel around the eastern region and (occasionally) beyond.
