1 Aga Khan University Engagement in Egypt 7th 18th March, 2018 During March, 2018 Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery East Africa undertook a series of capacity building activities in Aswan and Cairo. These activities were made possible by the support of Global Affairs Canada and delivered in collaboration with visiting experts from Charles Sturt University, NSW, Australia and the Higher Colleges of Technology, United Arab Emirates. Local administrative support was provided by the Om Habibeh Foundation (OHF), Aswan. Emerging Trends in Academic Libraries and Dewey Decimal Classification System Forty-five librarians from Aswan University participated in this interactive workshop delivered by Petit Gatiti. The workshop was designed to build understanding of information literacy, to equip participants to teach and evaluate information skills training courses, search information from bibliographic databases (e.g. PubMed, Egyptian Knowledge Bank), become familiar with the Dewey 1
2 Decimal Classification System (DDCS) for cataloguing, and use the Online Computer Library Center classification service. In groups of five, participants practiced their newly learned skills by identifying the DDCS number and developing call numbers to process newly purchased books donated to the Clinical Education unit at the Aswan University Hospital. Mr Peter Gatiti delivering his workshop presentation with the assistance of a skilled interpreter Application of Competency-based National Academic Reference Standards (NARS) in Nursing Curriculum (II) In April 2017, the Egyptian National Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation (NAQAAE) announced that the national curricula for nursing must be competency-based. Later that year NAQAAE released the National Academic Reference Standards (NARS) outlining the competency domains for BScN level nurses. During 2017, AKU-SONAM EA delivered workshops designed to support the development of competency-based curricula. This workshop building on the 2017 capacity-building activities, was attended by 37 participants, 20 Deans from Faculties of Nursing and 17 Executive Members of NAQAAE. The program focused on the development of competencybased nursing curricular that integrate the NARS throughout to assure graduates meet the required competencies. Group activities and discussions engaged participants in identifying the program and course contents, teaching strategies, learning activities and assessments that can be used to build a strong and effective curriculum. 2
3 Participants from the competency-based workshop March 8th 2nd International Nursing Conference This one-day conference was hosted by the Faculty of Nursing (FoN) at Aswan University (AU) in collaboration with the Om Habibeh Foundation and the Aga Khan University, East Africa. The conference was organized under the patronage of H.E. General Magdy Fouad Hegazy, Governor of Aswan and Professor Ahmed Ghallab, President of Aswan University. Approximately 250 participants attended including the General Manager of the Ministry of Health (MOH) Directorate in Aswan, Heads of Departments in the MOH, the FoN Dean AU, FONDeans from other universities and undergraduate students from FoN, AU. The conference was designed to provide an opportunity for local and international researchers and experts to exchange information and best practice in building competency-based curricula with the purpose of enhancing quality of care and patient safety. Keynote speakers included Professor Sharon Brownie, Associate Professor Rachel Rossiter and Professor Mohammed Hag-Ali from the AKU team. Familiarization and Study Trip: March 12 th 18 th, 2018 Delivery of quality health-care requires nursing educators and leaders with the vision and passion to make a difference in their community. The Children s Cancer Hospital in Cairo is an unparalleled example of what is possible. Dr Sherif Aboelnaga, the founding CEO of the hospital has created an environment that values the nursing profession and understands the importance of nurses as part of the multidisciplinary team to enhance quality of care and patient safety. The Clinical Nursing Education unit leads the comprehensive and continuous teaching, preceptorship and mentoring activities that enable to model nursing excellence. Eight nurses from Aswan were selected to travel to Cairo and undertake a week-long familiarization and study visit at The objectives for this visit were to provide immersion in a hospital with well-structured nursing education programs, to study and observe the role of a clinical instructor, and acquire practical knowledge to support and evaluate nursing students in the clinical setting. A very well organized program prepared by the Clinical Nursing Education unit engaged participants in oral presentations, group activities and discussions and dedicated time to observe clinical practice. A 3
4 formal debriefing session each evening encouraged reflection on the learning each day and the development of strategies for each person to implement upon their return to their workplace. AKU team with the Clinical Nursing Education Managers at Ms Amal Hussein Mohamed is a Head Nurse at Aswan University Hospital and has completed a Bachelor of Science (Nursing). She became a nurse because she wanted to save lives and take care of sick people including her family. She continues to work as a nurse so that she can share her knowledge and experience while providing high quality care. Day 4: We will take an active step in changing the way we think and create new ideas to support service in the hospital. Mr Ahmed Rabea is an Instructor at the Faculty of Nursing, Aswan University and holds a Bachelor of Science (Nursing). He has several years of clinical practice in a private cardiology hospital in Aswan. Day 5: I know about quality care, but I have now learned so much about the importance of continuous clinical practice development, quality improvement and patient safety. Ms Asmaa Abozied is an Instructor at the FON, AU and has completed a Bachelor of Science (Nursing). She initially wanted to be a doctor, however, her high school scores did not meet the minimum requirement to join a medical program. Asmaa then decided to pursue a career in nursing and along the way, discovered nursing has engaged her heart and desire to make a difference in her community. She continues to practice as a nurse because she wants to train the new generation of nurses in providing competency-based nursing care. 4
5 Day 1: Dr Aboelnaga s presentation when he said, we must collaborate together for change really impacted on my thinking. Mr Mohamed Yousef is an Instructor at the FoN, AU. He has completed a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) and currently studying a Masters of Science in Nursing with a specialty in critical care. He became a nurse because of his interest in healthcare and knew that this profession would perfectly match his caring personality. He continues to work as a nurse because he knows what it is like to suffer from a medical condition and wants to help others in similar situations. Day 2: I was assigned to a clinical instructor on the procedure unit and was astounded by the thoroughness taken to ensure patient safety before any procedure. I now understand the correlation between following hospital policies and procedures to enhance quality of care and patient safety. Ms Sabreen Yousef is an Instructor at the FoN, AU and has completed a Bachelor of Science (Nursing). Her main source of inspiration to become a nurse comes from an innate desire to help people and care for them in times of need. She is also a person who thrives on being challenged thus nursing offers her diversity and learning opportunities. She continues to practice as a nurse because of her desire to care for patients and their families. She is proud to be a nurse. Day 1: When I was in primary school, I helped to fund-raise for 57357, I am so proud now to see this hospital and the quality of care that is being provided here in Egypt. Mrs Monira Solyman is a Nursing Supervisor at the Ministry of Health and holds a Masters in Nursing Education. She became a nurse because she has always had a passion to help people and this remains the reason for her continuing to work as a nurse. She hopes to enroll in a doctorate program in the near future to support her mission to improve the clinical practice of nurses in Aswan. Day 5: I ve learned a lot from this training and now feel ready to make change to improve the quality of care Ms Seham Ebrahem is a Directorate of Health staff at the Ministry of Health and holds a Bachelor of Science (Nursing). She became a nurse to help those in need and improve the quality of care. She enjoys her work responsibilities some of which include assisting in training nurses and collecting and sending data to the MOH. Day 3: Shared with the debrief group the plans for change that she had begun developing for her workplace. We have to start in our Directorate of Health office with ourselves before we try and get others to change. 5
6 Dr Thanaa Diab is a Lecturer in the FoN, AU. She has worked in two other universities prior to beginning her work in Aswan just over one year ago. Her doctoral thesis focused on the effect of development of a clinical pathway for postoperative outcomes for patient undergoing colorectal surgery. Day 5: I want to support change in the FoN and to undertake research activities that focus on translating research into teaching and clinical practice. AKU team and Aswan participants with Dr Sherif Aboelnaga, CEO of The pre-conference workshops and conference have provided further opportunities to support the development of competency-based curriculum in Egypt. For each of the eight participants from Aswan, the familiarization/study trip was repeatedly described as amazing. This visit provided an opportunity to not only see what is possible but to observe first-hand the pivotal role that nurses have in the delivery and maintenance of safe and effective health care. Each of them have been empowered to begin the process of improving clinical practice in their workplaces.
