4 Mission Statement Improve the provision of emergency medical care in Ghana through innovative and sustainable physician, nursing and medical student training programmes. To increase the number of qualified emergency health care workers and retain them in Ghana. 5 Increasing Capacity Train 41 EM Residents and graduate 27 to faculty or fellowship positions with expertise in providing EM care and training through: Train-the-trainers methodology Innovative educational modules, clinical simulation and integrated team training Research Training Administrative and operational training Train and graduate 80 Nurses through Emergency Nurse certificate training program Similar training methodology Train current EMS providers on management of trauma, mass casualties, patient transport and basic skills required for effective prehospital care of emergency patients.
6 Promoting Retention Train-the-trainers model in-country Recruit and train residents and nurses from different regions of the country, who are committed to their local populations to become leaders and trainers Prepare graduates for EM needs of Ghana and local communities Rural EM EMS Team membership Develop leadership, clinical, administrative and research skills of trainees to enhance their advancement within hospital or university academic structure Develop an EM community of peers Research Community Advocacy
7 Country Relevant Research Integrate multidisciplinary, locally-driven research in EM Develop research skills within EM faculty, residents and nurses to conduct locally relevant research that influences improvements in patient care and provides foundation for community advocacy in the prevention of injury and other EM related diseases. Each resident will conduct a scholarly research project as part of residency focused on locally relevant clinical or operational issues.
8 Improved Collaborations Integrated approach in EM residency planning in needs assessment, curriculum development, approval process with involvement of relevant stakeholders Ministry of Health (MOH) - including KATH Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons KNUST and other educational institutions Similar approach with nursing and medical student training programmes Ministry of Health (MOH) - including KATH Nurses and Midwives Council KNUST Provision of training facilities by MOH
9 Role of University of Michigan Clinical bedside teaching, didactic lectures and simulation training in EM related procedures for early EM residents and nurses will be provided by faculty from UM EM Dept. and Nursing School. Team, administrative and operational training to develop skills necessary for trainees to function as EM and hospital leaders. Research training and mentorship for senior residents and junior faculty to develop dedicated research careers. Curricular expertise including the use of e- learning and OER.
10 Year 1 Projected Outcomes Residency Training 13 residents (six in Year 1 and seven in Year 2) commenced training with intensive didactic, bedside clinical teaching and simulation training 30% Didactic Curriculum developed and delivered to 1 st and 2 nd year residency classes Nurse Training Program Curriculum for Certificate Programme developed and approved by KNUST, Nurses and Midwives Council and National Accreditation Board
11 Year 1 Projected Outcomes (contd) EM Medical Student Training Developed curriculum, didactic and clinical training materials for 4 th year mandatory EM clinical rotation Develop Team Training Curriculum for EM Residency, Nurse and medical student training programmes. Develop initial components of infrastructure for enabling technologies and simulation training.
12 Year 3 Projected Outcomes Residency Training Program 13 residents graduated to EM faculty or fellowship positions and additional 14 will be engaged in their residency training. 100% of residency didactic materials developed and available for training at KATH or other clinical sites within Ghana Nurse Training Program 80 EM Nurses trained using developed EM nursing curriculum 100% of training materials developed and available for future training in other sites in Ghana. Nurse preceptors identified to serve as future educators of certificate program
13 Year 3 Projected Outcomes (contd) Medical Student Program Two years of medical student rotations in EM 100% of EM curriculum materials created for medical students EMS Needs assessment completed and training curriculum developed
14 Year 5 Projected Outcomes Residency Training Program 4 Classes (27 residents) would have completed EM resident training and graduated to faculty or fellowship programs Additional 14 residents commenced EM training EM junior faculty created in substantial numbers to continue EM training program at KATH and form additional nascent training programs at additional sites within Ghana 100% didactic materials developed for export to other EM training programmes within Ghana and West Africa Nurse Training Program 100% of current EM Nurses at KATH would have completed EM certificate programme EM Nursing curriculum material taught by Ghanaian nursing preceptors identified during previous years of training programme
15 Year 5 Projected Outcomes (contd) Medical Student Training Program 600 medical students will have completed clinical rotation in EM EM Junior Faculty will take lead on medical student training programme and will ensure sustainability of medical student training EM Interest group will be developed by junior faculty to stimulate EM career mentorship 100% of Team training modules delivered with identification of junior EM faculty lead for conduct of future team training 100% of Current EMS providers trained in basics of EMS transport, trauma management and pre-hospital care. Enabling technology and Clinical Simulation Infrastructure created with full on-site computer lab and clinical simulation lab with low tech simulation materials
