1 Dysphagia education sessions 2014 The development and delivery of a new model of training focused on dysphagia management to nursing staff and health care workers from a variety of services across the Kerry area Speech & Language Therapy Department, Kerry General Hospital QPS Awards October
2 Background : Increased number of referrals from clients in community hospitals, residential nursing homes and service providers within the county. Wider range of disciplines involved in clients care. While SLTs identified need to provide dysphagia related training, historically there had been a low uptake of training sessions in the acute hospital in this area. We needed to develop training to meet the needs of the clients as well as the multiple service providers and care teams involved, doing so with reduced staffing levels, and balancing service delivery in the acute and community settings. 5 Salient features identified: founded on IASLT Standards of Practice 2012 Outlines the variety in members of any given multi-agency team will vary according to the local working context and particular circumstances Programmes of training and education should underpin policy, protocols and practice Recommends core features to be included in dysphagia related training: The Normal Swallow Risk factors for FEDS disorders Early signs of FEDS disorders Onward referral for SLT for further assessment. Increase awareness of normal swallow mechanisms and the signs and symptoms of dysphagia, as well as the actions to be taken if you are QPS Awards October concerned regarding a service user s swallow function.
6 Salient features identified: National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare - Effective Care and Support Effective care is about ensuring that each service user receives well coordinated care and support at the right time and in the right place. 7 Dysphagia Education Sessions 2014: Output 198 nurses and healthcare workers attended training sessions during January to July 2014 A further 358 home helps attended training sessions during May to July All attendees sat an exam, and on completion received a certificate to aid recording of competencies. 8 Dysphagia Education Sessions 2014: Outcomes The speech and language therapy department has successfully shared information regarding the effective care and support of clients with dysphagia with: 358 home help staff, nursing and health care staff from 13 nursing homes, nursing and health care staff from 5 community hospitals / community nursing units, nursing and health care staff from 3 day centres, nursing and health care staff from 10 health centres / PCCCs, nursing staff from mental health services, students, nursing and health care staff from Kerry General Hospital.
