2 Department Commandant Jim Stone The National Convention is over now and the MCL is marching forward. Some of the things we were told that were to happen, have happened and others are still in the works. The new proposed By-Laws that were voted and approved at National are now on line in the National Library. The new database is online and the new instructions for the improved Marine for Life Program is out. There is more to come. I think all of you can, again feel proud of the Marine Corps League. All this, and we are debt free and in the plus column for our budget. Things continue to move in the right direction. We have just survived the hurricane and it seems, at least for now, there is only a few of our members that have been seriously affected. I have heard only from a few around the coast so far. I spoke with Greg Hunt on Friday and he has just finished a conference in Myrtle Beach, and he says the roads are clear, the business are open, and the tourists are there. According to Greg, It s almost like they didn t have a hurricane! One of the reasons for the call was to ask if Charleston had re-submitted their bid to host the 2020 National Convention. He said they have, but they re-submitted at $139/night. He also said that 2 other cities have submitted bids and both hotels are lower priced than Charleston. The decision as to who will host the 2020 National Convention will be made by the National Board of Trustees at the Mid-Winter Conference in March. We still are hosting the SE Division Convention in Charleston in March It will be at the Crowne Plaza in North Charleston. The rate will be $138/night with breakfast. There will be a lot to do there for spouses since it is located at the end of Tanger Outlet. In June, the 25th Anniversary of the Department of South Carolina will be held at the same location, the Crowne Plaza in N. Charleston. Please make your plans to attend. It should be a special time for all and we will celebrate our 25th together. Remember the Quarterly will be on 13 October at the Scottish Rites Building located at 7230 Garners Ferry Rd, Columbia. We have met there several times. We will discuss a lot that happened at National in August. Come and enjoy, learn, tell us what you think and pass what you learn on to your Detachment members. See you all on 13 October. S/F Jim Oct 2018 Department of South Carolina Page 2

3 Dept. Sr. Vice Commandant Jerry Holt For the most part, those of us here in South Carolina dodged the bullet when Hurricane Florence hit the coast. Several of us who live inland had contacted Commandants of SC Detachments along the coast to offer shelter to those who needed a place to stay. Fortunately, it seems that anybody who needed a place to go was already covered. We ve followed up after the storm, and it seems that we have had no League families in the Department who have suffered significant damage. Back in September 2016, Louisiana was hit by a major storm which affected many League members. The members of our Department approved an emergency contribution of $5,000 to assist those League members who lost their homes, or incurred significant damage. We also provided similar aid to members of the Department of Florida when they were impacted. On September 21, we received a posting on the Department s Facebook page (yes, we do have one in addition to our website. it s Marine Corps League Department of South Carolina). It was a message from Richard Gordon, the Adjutant / Paymaster of Detachment That s a small Detachment of 34 members in Madison, Maine. Marine Gordon was looking for contact information so they could send us a check to aid any of our members who were in distress because of the storm. They were sending a similar check to the Department of North Carolina for the same purpose. Needless to say, I was extremely impressed by this gesture from a relatively small Detachment to reach out to assist Marines in another region of the Country. I shouldn t have been surprised, because after all, that s one of the reasons we belong to the Marine Corps League. Since, at this time it appears that we don t have any members seriously impacted by the storm, I contacted Jeffrey Jones, Commandant of the Department North Carolina. You ve undoubtedly seen news reports that show that North Carolina did not fare as well as we did. North Carolina had 10 Detachments that were severely affected, including 15 members whose homes were devastated and not habitable until major repairs are made. These Marines can use our help. We ll be addressing this issue at our upcoming Quarterly meeting (October 13 at the Scottish Rite Center, 7230 Garners Ferry Road, in Columbia). We hope to get member approval to send financial aid to North Carolina. Following the example of the Maine Detachment 1361, it s worth the consideration of your Detachment to also consider sending a contribution. Here is the contact information: Please send your checks to: DoNC MCL Paymaster % Randal Rempfer Strickland Rd Box-114 Raleigh, NC Remember - our Mission is Marines Helping Marines Semper Fi, Jerry Holt Oct 2018 Department of South Carolina Page 3

4 Dept. Sr. Vice Commandant Larry Frelin Report from the office of Jr. Vice Department Commandant, I am personally looking forward to the busy Marine Corps League season we have ahead. I enjoy the Marine Corps Ball that we put on and attend, I enjoy the kickoff of the Toys for Tots Campaign that we lead each and every year for Aiken County, and I enjoy the Veterans Day Ceremony that Detachment #939 puts on in Aiken South Carolina, and finally the distribution of the toys we've collected and the Christmas Parade. So its a busy time of the year. I am still working on putting together a team to work on the development on a broad recruiting tool that I hope works for all of South Carolina Department and maybe with more scope than just the Department. Several have told me that they want to work on this task together and it is my desire to work with all Detachments interested. Timing is always everything and my timing with a current Sr. Vice up state hasn't gone as well as I had hoped, I hope to rectify that situation soon. MSgt Sandy Thompson seems to be a wonderful person but she is enjoying life to the fullest (just kidding Sandy). When We are all said and done with this effort I will no doubt find out that she is the brains of this proposed effort. I hope each of you have a wonderful Fall Season and that each of you remember to keep our Veterans in your thoughts and prayers and help out where ever you possibly can! God Bless and Semper Fi, Larry Frelin Jr. Vice Department Commandant Oct 2018 Department of South Carolina Page 4

16 Around the nation Hurricane Relief Scam Donating Support an Experienced Charity Donating to experienced disaster relief organizations is your best bet to provide emergency help for victims of Hurricane Florence. Be on the lookout for posts from individuals claiming to raise relief funds. Even if sincere, such efforts may risk lives, complicate access by professional efforts and potentially divert donations. And too often, such solicitations are fraudulent. How the Scam Works Facebook pages and crowdfunding campaigns requesting donations spring up in the wake of natural disasters like Hurricane Florence. But if the fundraiser isn't associated with an established charity, reconsider donating. Some fundraising efforts are outright scams: con artists pocket the donations or use scam donation forms to collect banking information. Others are created by well-meaning people or groups. They may intend to do good with the donations, but they lack the infrastructure of an established charity. Still others are "click bait" designed to create a large number of followers that can later be sold to a new page owner. Tips to avoid these cons: BBB Wise Giving Alliance suggests that donors keep the following tips in mind to help avoid questionable appeals for support: Verify the trustworthiness of soliciting relief organizations by visiting Give.org to access free reports that specify if the charity meets the 20 BBB Standards for Charity Accountability. See if the charity has an on-the-ground presence in the impacted areas. Unless the charity already has skilled operations in the affected areas, it may be difficult to provide assistance quickly and effectively. Find out if the charity is providing direct aid or is raising money for other groups. Some charities may be raising money to pass along to relief organizations. If so, you may want to consider "avoiding the middleman" and give directly to charities that have a presence in the region. More information: Read the full article on This includes a list of BBB Accredited Charities raising funds for hurricane assistance. 17 SOME HISTORY Late in the afternoon on March, 10, 1966, Colonel Charles A. Chuck House led 16 UH-34C Choctaw helicopters into the A Shau Valley to evacuate U.S. and allied soldiers from the besieged Special Forces camp there. Landing in a hailstorm of fire and chaos, they successfully pulled out 69 soldiers. But two UH-34s were shot down and seven other fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft were damaged. In the two days following, Colonel House s squadron brought out 161 of the camp s 186 survivors, including 10 of its 12 Special Forces advisers. More than 400 allied troops were lost. House s squadron also suffered heavily. Twenty-one of his squadron s 24 UH-34 helicopters had to be replaced. The mission exhibited the versatility and durability of the Choctaw. The Choctaw first flew on March 8, 1954, as the XHSS-1, essentially an upgrade of Sikorski s successful H- 19 used in the Korean War. Production versions came with a 1,525 shp engine, giving it an impressive lift capacity for its time. Initially ordered for the Navy, it was adopted by the Army in 1955 as the H-34 Choctaw, and in 1957 the Marines ordered it as the HUS-1 Seahorse. The Air Force and Coast Guard also acquired the type. Sold extensively overseas, it saw its first operational employment in the French-Algerian War where it was used primarily as a troop transport. Designated UH-34C (Marines) and CH-34C (Army) after 1962, the Choctaw served in Vietnam with USMC and South Vietnamese forces. The U.S. Army did not deploy Choctaws to Vietnam, but did supply more than 100 to South Vietnam. The Marines used them extensively through Their simplicity made them more reliable and popular than early UH-1s. The Marines armed some UH-34s on a trial basis with two M- 60C machine guns and two 19-cell 2.75-inch rocket pods. Called Stingers, they were America s first attack helicopters. The trial wasn t successful, but the kits were modified and became the model for kits used to arm UH-1E helicopters late in the war. The Marines withdrew the last UH-34 from Vietnam in August 1969, but the 34 soldiered on in Reserve and National Guard units until Although more powerful gas-turbine-powered helicopters rendered piston-engine types such as the Choctaw obsolete, the UH-34 s simple, robust design made it one of the most popular commercial and military helicopters of its day. Some 1,800 were produced, serving in the military and security forces of 27 nations. Britain built a gas-turbine-powered version called the Westland Wessex that remained in service well into the 1980s.
