Last year we had a very productive year and I hope we can continue that into this coming year. During the last staff meeting held in September, I asked each section head to come up with attainable goals that could be accomplished within 3 months as well as long term goals. I was very pleased in the goals that were set and I firmly believe if we work together and support each section we can not only achieve the goals set but exceed them. I also set some goals for the squadron to achieve and again I believe we can accomplish these goals. First, I would like to see an increase in squadron membership by at least 10 new members in the next 12 months. Second, I would like 75% of squadron membership dues paid by June Third, I would like to establish a mentoring program for new members. Forth and not last, I would like to have all staff personnel participate in 2 events (Sarex, Airshow or other outside Squadron 5 event) within the next 12 months to get the word out about Squadron 5. I believe we had a very productive staff meeting that will guide us into a very productive and positive new year. Look for more information about the goals set in the near future. Favorite place to visit/vacation: Gunnison, CO and Sierra Nevada for fly fishing. Hobbies/leisure time: Other than Flying, skiing in Colorado. 3 PAGE 3 Are you a member of the Caterpillar Club? While going through some personal items of the late Lt. Col. Russell T. Kaufman that were donated to the squadron after his death in April of 2014, I found this certificate. I had no idea what it was and did some digging around on the internet. The Caterpillar Club started with an army test pilot named Harold Harris. On October 20, 1922 he was flying a Loening W-2A monoplane fighter in a mock dogfight with a friend. His plane had been equipped with experimental aerodynamically balanced ailerons. After taking off from the test center at McCook field, Dayton, Ohio, near where the Wright brothers tested their plane, his plane started to rock violently and Harris found he could not control it. He had to bail out. Standing in the cockpit, he was sucked out by the slipstream. After three tries he found and pulled the rip cord. This main chute opened about 500 feet above the street of Dayton. Looking up he admired the beautiful silk from which the parachute was made and at how white and clean it was. He was the first American known to be saved by a manually operated parachute in an emergency jump from a disabled aircraft. Two newspaper reporters from the Dayton Herald, discussing the event, suggested that since there would be more jumps with the chute, a club should be formed to recognize these brave airmen. Several names were considered but they then selected the Caterpillar Club. Why? Because the parachute main sail and shroud lines were woven from the silk made from the caterpillar, Bombyx mori. These caterpillars use a spit-like substance in their mouths to spin a long silk thread that they wrap around themselves, forming a cocoon that they live in for several weeks until they become moths. Those long silk threads can then be unwound from the cocoons and woven together to make silk cloth. During World War II there were several companies involved in manufacturing parachutes and maintaining records of the life-saving "incidents". The Switlik Parachute Company and the Irvin Air Chute Company were two of them. Along with our very own Lt. Col. Kaugman who carried a Caterpillar Club membership card are former President George H. W. Bush, General Doolittle, and Colonel Lindbergh, to name a few. Are you a member of the Caterpillar Club? Let me know. 1 st. Lt. Carolyn L. Payments can be made online utilizing the squadron website (Paypal), or by paying with cash or check at the meeting. If you have paid a portion of the yearly dues and still owe an outstanding balance please pay the remainder as soon as possible. Its important to pay your dues to help finance the great facility that we do have. Facility: As a reminder we do not have a cleaning service. We must police our own. If you see something is dirty or out of place please help out and clean it up. Our Facility speaks pride about us and what we do and stand for. Remember we are what we represent. 4 PAGE 4 Aerospace Education: The United States Air Force and Boing is studying aircraft wakes to use them in formation flying in order to save fuel. Similar to how surfers use waves to ride the surf, USAF transport planes can use the lead planes wake to increase fuel efficiency up to 10 percent. For more information go to the link below. Miscellaneous information: Remember when wearing the CAP uniform, refer to the uniform manual The uniform (dress, corporate, flight, etc..) is to be worn in its entirety and within regulations. If you wear the corporate uniform (polo shirt) with anything other than gray pants (i.e. blue jeans, shorts) you are out of regulation. Our image is a direct representation of who we are representing (the CAP and Squadron 5). If you are not in the proper uniform at a Sarex or other event you may be asked to correct the uniform or leave until it is corrected. This is not a punishment but keeping within CAP regulations.
