While the editors and contributors strive to provide accurate and timely information, please consult local chapters and the Indiana Society web site for updated and additional information concerning specific meetings and events. Honored Compatriots, As descendants of the patriots who sacrificed everything in the American War for Independence, we will soon able to celebrate a unique event. While it is not our final countdown, it is hard not to hear the popular song from the 1980s band Europe running through my mind. We have one opportunity to maximize this event honoring those patriots. 92,264 hours 4,011 days 573 weeks 131 months 32 Indiana SAR HOD Meetings 10 Indiana SAR Annual Meetings That is all the time we have to prepare from our upcoming 11 July 2015 State Wide HOD & Strategic Planning Meeting until the celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Together we must begin planning the activities and events honoring and celebrating this event. Once 04 July 2026 is over, it will be another 50 years until the 300th. We must get this right. As a child I remember the events around the 1976 bicentennial well. One of my favorites was to go visit the freedom train that traveled all across the United States. Children were wearing tri-cornered cocked (or tricorn d as they called them) hats, adults collecting all kinds of items, and there was a sudden fascination into the history of the founders. Many people began looking in their past to see if they were connected to those founders. During this time, the Daughters of the American Revolution saw their membership more than double. The SAR was not so fortunate. We have a great opportunity and responsibility just 11 years ahead of us. We need to make sure the story of the patriots are told, that Indiana s role in the Revolution is highlighted, that the children of this great state learn about the sacrifices of the patriots, and we must be prepared to increase our membership. We must begin asking men to join the SAR now. We must unite and work together as members and chapters. That pride you feel deep inside you, the passion for our country, liberty and history, is the blood of your patriot ancestors heating up with excitement. It is through you that they will celebrate 250 years of the Declaration of Independence. 11 July 2015 is in important day for each of us as members of the SAR in Indiana. We will come together and begin planning for our future. With just 11 years until the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence it seems proper to remember those closing words of that powerful document. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor. Will you make that same pledge to your brothers in the Indiana SAR? Will you please join us on 11 July 2015 in Muncie hosted by the Continental Chapter to begin planning for the future of the SAR in Indiana? United We Stand. YMHS, Wayne 1

5 At their May meeting in Fishers, Indiana, the Alexander Hamilton Chapter had the pleasure of hearing Don McAllister present some of the works of his organization the National Veteran's Historical Archive, a national non-profit 501(c)3, whose main goal is to capture the life histories of our Veterans. His work has thus far resulted in recording video interviews of hundreds of military veterans stories across 22 states. This work is primarily to provide a cost-free video narrative of the veteran's life story for the veteran's family, but the archive is also provided for public preservation. As this work is so aligned with many of the SAR's principles the Chapter presented Don McAllister the Bronze Citizenship Medal for stepping up and doing this vital work before these men's memories are lost forever. Through his work and organizations with similar goals history has a chance of being more than a date and place to be memorized. 11 NSSAR Veterans Recognition Comittee Currently we have five Veterans Corps. They are WWII, Korea, Vietnam, South East Asia and the newest - Military Service Veterans. We are actively beginning a Corps on "Special Ops" i.e., Cuba, Dominican Republic, Panama, Bosnia and many others in which the US Military participated. We are still looking for INSSAR Veterans. If you have not received a NSSAR Certificate or INSSAR Certificate you need to fill out the Veterans Recognition Form and have your Chapter President sign it to certify that he has seen your 214 and forward it to me for the INSSAR Certificate(s). I will forward the form on to NSSAR for your National Certificate(s). I have listed 133 INSSAR Veterans by name that have received a certificate(s) or will in the near future. If you served in any branch of the Armed Forces but were not in a Combat Zone, you are eligible for the Military Service Certificate. If you served in Korea after the War You are eligible for the Korean Defense Certificate. You must document the date, unit and location where you served in Korea. Arnold NSSAR Veterans Recognition Committee Member INSSAR Veterans Recognition JimIndySAR@aol.com State Veteran s Programs Committee Summer is upon us and I am sure many of you will be conducting, or attending patriotic events. June 1 st kicked of the program year for the Partners-in-Patriotism program. The Guidelines are simple. Conduct a joint program any program that supports an SAR objective with any veteran s organization then submit a reports to the Chairman and receive a certificate from the President General. Reports should include: When, Where, What and Who with photos and newspaper articles if possible. A complete description of the event with names of the SAR Chapters and Veterans Organizations. Why is this important? Maybe you would like some help with your chapter program or meeting. Many veteran s organizations have speakers, color guards, buglers, and can perform rifle salutes. Get to know them and share the load. On the other side, ask if you can provide assistance at one of their events or meetings, they will gladly accept the offer. We share common missions and our events and will be stronger by working together within our communities. Finally, there are multiple programs within the umbrella of the SAR Veteran s Programs Committee. The committee requires a few volunteers to step forward and join the committee this year to ensure we continue to connect to past to the present. 12 Americanism Elementary Poster Contest Compatriots! This is your chance to communicate /create future leaders of our Glorious Country; a chance to direct them to leadership. The AEPC is directed to the 3rd-5 th graders studying the American Revolution. This is the opportunity for children to step out and show their knowledge, creativity and leadership. Each year a new theme is appointed by National Society. The students do their own research and create a Poster of the years subject. The students start at the Chapter level, then advance to the State level and the State winner advances to the National Contest at Congress. Awards are given at State and National levels.chapter level awards are at the each Chapters digression. A New Manuel is being combined and will be available soon to help. The Official rules are on the National website Americanism_Poster_Contest. All Chapters are welcome to participate. Chapter Presidents and Secretaries consider a AEPC Chair! Some members of the Alexis Coquillard Chapter are raising funds to commission one of the iconic south shore poster depicting the battle of petite fort (Battle of the Dunes)The south Shore Poster series date back to the 1930 s marketing the south shore line Chicago to South Bend. Over the years the posters have become iconic and a collector s item. The artist s commission fee(s) is $10,000. As you see by the fees it is popular. Posters can be sold to recoup fees and can be redirected to the INSSAR, and the original painting may be sold to a collector as well. Please consider a donation to this historic project! 16 Operation Ancestor Search Chairman, Richard Steckley Vice Chairman, Ron Darrah Operation Ancestor Search (OAS) is a joint project between Ancestry.com and the SAR. It is a free genealogy program offered to injured service members in military hospitals, Veterans hospitals and armed forces retirement homes across the country. Its goal is to help veterans, their families, and their caregivers discover their roots and better understand themselves through family history. The Cook Chapter has been able to get the program established in the Roudebush VAMC in Indianapolis. OAS is currently setting up regular schedules to provide the program to the injured service members. The first sessions have just begun are they are having some success. They have also just added sessions at the VA s Domiciliary. Indiana s OAS is looking for additional people to become members of the genealogy team that works with these Veterans. Just recently a member of the DAR asked to help out. If you know anyone who loves genealogy and is willing to help OAS, please contact our team and we will help them get involved. In January 2015 the Cook Chapter received a gracious donation of six laptops for their OAS program. Those laptops are making it possible to also provide the OAS program at many Veteran Services locations outside of the VAMC, and they are in discussions to add several of those locations around Indianapolis. It is our hope by October to have a program outlined complete with information so that the SAR Chapters of the INSSAR can also become active in OAS in their local areas. 20 INSSAR LADIES AUXILIARY Indiana Society Color Guard The Indiana Society Color Guard is probably best known for the color and pageantry their uniforms and flags bring to a parade, grave dedication or other community event. Emotions can range anywhere from children's questions and smiles to tears from a veteran's pride and memories. While all of this is true and important, one cannot overlook the wonderful side effect of fellowship with others who share common interests and passions. New members are encouraged for local and statewide participation. There are loaner uniforms available and participation and travel is limited only by your own time and energy. Please consider serving in the Color Guard and experiencing the fellowship of your compatriots and the appreciation of your community. Contact Stuart Hart for more information (317) or sar.stuart@gmail.com The Indiana Ladies Auxiliary Sons of the American Revolution, assists Indiana Society with programs, fund raising, historical education and carrying out its mission of inspiring patriotism and informing others of the contributions of our patriot ancestors. Membership in the Auxiliary is open to the wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces and other women relatives of members of the Sons of the American Revolution. The Auxiliary meets quarterly during the INSSAR House of Delegates meetings. In addition to conducting business, the ladies often have their own programs and speakers.
