2 Governor Samuel W. T. Lanham, Camp 586 Merry Christmas! COMMANDER S CORNER By Larry Martin Commander Governor Samuel W.T. Lanham Camp 586 December, 2017 I hope each and everyone of you have had a very Merry Christmas and know your new year somehow will be bright. Janet and I had an excellent Christmas and we delight in making one another gifts. Handmade comes from the heart. I am making her new Bedroom Furniture starting with a new dresser for her. And she will be making Me new shirts and things I need. Her custom shirts are outstanding. Our Christmas party was great, I know many of you had other commitments that evening, we did miss you. The food and fellowship were superb. I want to especially Thank Diane Lindsey for making the beautiful decorations and everyone who brought food, well we feasted well... We held our annual elections that night. Once again it was a vote of confidence in the current leadership. I was reelected Commander, Gary Rozzell 1st Lt., Devin Lindsey 2nd LT and Chris Lusk 3rd LT and Chris is, also taking over the newsletter. Be sure and Thank Chris for doing this and Thank Jerry Puckett for all he has done for our Camp. I want each and every member to please sign up for our Lee-Jackson Banquet. It is our years highlight and will be special again this year. It is how we raise funds to purchase markers for cemeteries honoring the Confederates buried there. Our goal is two a year, one near Memorial Day the other close to Veterans day. With 165 cemeteries in Parker County we have a way to go. We will properly dedicate them with rifle salutes and mortar salutes and we can get the press to cover them. Positive press is good for the Camp, good for the Division and good for the SCV. I will hand them press releases that are approved by the Division PIO and we will reap the positive benefits for our Camp. (Continued on next page)

3 Governor Samuel W. T. Lanham, Camp 586 COMMANDER S CORNER So please send your reservations with names to the Camp. I sent each of the flyer with the Camps P O Box and make sure your names are on them, so we can send you the tickets via . Remember kids under 12 are free. We have music, great southern food and a wonderful speaker coming. The ATM commander, Division Commander and the 2nd LT Commander have said they will be attending. This is an honor for the Camp and we will present our party manners and post & retire colors and make sure all have a great time. Beginning at the February First Monday (02-04 FEB2018) we will be returning to our spot in the new tent and make our presence known to the public. We have great success doing this and I need more Camp members to please make time to come help. It will take 4 men to set up and strike the tent alone. We need 2-3 men per shift for the entire weekend and on Sunday an extra man or two to break Camp. We have over 70 members with cadets and will be growing more. Our Camp is one of the best I have ever attended, and it is because of each and every one of you, and no I am not forgetting the Ladies, they make the Camp even better. Please thank them for helping make us shine guys, without them we would be lost. As Winter passes we will show Parker County we deserve the reputation our Camp has with the community. We are always cheered in parades. And speaking of parades we need to begin planning next Christmas now, inviting new participants and making the annual event better each year. I also want to add that I am well and truly honored you placing faith in my leadership again. I am very humbled by this. Thank You! Larry Martin Commander Gov. W.T. Lanham Camp #586 Weatherford,

4 Governor Samuel W. T. Lanham, Camp 586 ADJUTANT S REPORT To each and everyone, I wish you all a Happy New Year. With the new year we have many great things ahead. First being the Lee-Jackson banquet. Hope by the end of January we see things improving for us all. Thank you for trusting me as your Adjutant for the coming year. Best Wishes, Jeff Western Adjutant Gov. W.T. Lanham Camp #586 Weatherford, Jeff Western Adjutant

5 Governor Samuel W. T. Lanham, Camp 586 Editor s Soapbox This will be my last edition as Editor. Christopher Lusk will be taking over come January and I am sure he will do a superb job. There, that was easy to say. When I sat down to write this farewell piece it almost felt like I was about to write an obituary! I m not going away, just stepping down from this. To be honest I was getting a little burnt out but mainly I felt it was time for someone with new ideas to take over the job. Time to pass the torch, or such. I feel it s time for a new perspective/view and I m sure Chris will do it well. For sure I will offer any assistance. When I inherited the job it was so easy due to Dan Dzivi having laid the groundwork with his excellent layout. Commander Larry Martin has been a pleasure to work with and for. Any idea I ever had he would usually say something like it s your newsletter Jerry, to which I would reply NO, it s the CAMP S newsletter. I guess that if I had one thing that I m kind of proud of, it is our Wall Of Honor, and I ll be honest, keeping it up to date can be a challenge with the growth of our Camp, and once again I feel we can attribute that mainly due to our great Commander and all he does for our Camp and the SCV. Sometimes I feel there s a little jealousy from other Camps but to me that s just being pettiness on their part. Just my opinion and as Editor you re allowed a little of that..opinions. It has been a great honor to have served the Camp in this capacity. I cannot imagine a Camp without a newsletter. I ve always felt a newsletter could be our first contact with someone not familiar with the SCV or our Camp and as they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression. As I said earlier, I m sure Chris will do a great job. PLEASE show him your support. Feedback, or more likely the LACK of feedback is the bane of most Editors. God bless us all and long live the South! Humbly Yours, Jerry Puckett
