Saluting veterans and flag image in masthead supplied by istockphoto.com/lifejourneys Commander s Call Wow, yet again another absolutely fantastic month at the Poway VFW Post. I am so proud of all the wonderful things happening at the Post and your fabulous contributions. As the Post CDR, thanks for all of your hard work and effort. I m so proud of all the accomplishments happening at the Post and all exciting things coming up in the next month or so. No surprise, VFW Poway is in the top 10% of VFW Posts in California. The POW/MIA event was quite something else! If you missed it, suggest you come out next year. CDR Don Stonecipher did a super job putting that together. Special Thanks to amazing voice of Joylani singing, yet again, the National Anthem. She will be singing again for us on 11/11/11. Also, I ve have secured a Veteran s Day guest speaker - CAPT Trey Glaze, US Navy and new Poway Post member. Speaking of Fundraising, currently, the Post has two fundraisers going on. One is the Sycuan Casino Bus Trip set for Oct 13 - ALL proceeds benefit our House Fund (whether for a new ice machine*, bathroom upgrades, new ATM machine, etc.). Love to have you come with us - only $25 per person. The other ongoing fundraiser is our Solar Project which is about 90% funded. If you know any corporate donors, please let me know. The target goal is 12K. Break Break * Thanks for Robert Fenter and Chiefer for fixing the ice machine which we thought needed to be replaced and avoiding another fundraiser for an ice machine. Bravo Zulu. Let s talk about another significant accomplishment by our Membership Committee - 10 new members in one month and I m hearing 10 more coming this month. Absolutely unbelievable - Thanks Greg, Richard and QM Alan. Remember, we are all recruiters for the VFW and the VFW AUX. As I have said numerous times, we can rebuild Poway VFW one burger at a time one new member at a time. When you see a new member, please welcome them at our Post. The MCAS Air Show was hard work, fun and a smashing success (but for the District Aux President falling and breaking her wrist) passing out thousands of VFW Buddy Poppies, VFW Airplanes and getting new VFW members. Thanks to my Friday crew, Alberto, Pablo, Melissa, Allan, Alan, Fernando, Leroy and the VFW District 1 CDR Steve Williams, the Saturday crew, Bobby, George, Bud, Chad, Ana, Allan, District 1 Aux President Kathie, and members from the Mission Valley Post, State and District Chaplin Wright and the Sunday crew, Bill K, Ed, Leroy, and the Sunday reserve crew of Loida, Pablo and Cindee! Looking forward, the Post has many fun events coming in the next 6 weeks - Friday Night Burger Burns continue to be a great deal (please come on down, bring your favorite side dish or desert). Check out a Saturday College football game or NFL game on Sunday or come to a Meeting to get involved. We have a Navy/Notre Dame VFW Poway continued on page 2 The Patriot October

Chad, thanks for securing the MCAS Air Show space. I look forward to seeing you at the Post, meeting all the new members and Navy beating ND. Bill Morrison From the Senior Vice Commander Comrades, It s that time of year when we look for talented student patriots in our community through essay contests conducted by the VFW. Specifically, I refer to the Patriot s Pen and Voice of Democracy essay competitions which award students who express themselves through patriotic and democratic themed essays. Patriot s Pen is open to all students in grades 6 8. Voice of Democracy is open to grades Students attending Public Schools, Charter Schools, and Home Schools are welcome to enter the competition. This year s theme for Patriot s Pen is Why I Honor the American Flag, and for Voice of Democracy, Why My Vote Matters. At the Post level we offer $100 to First Place in each competition and the winning essays are forwarded to District to compete locally for a $500 cash prize. District winners are forwarded to Department to compete State wide for up to $1000 and those winners compete Nationwide for up to $5000. If you know patriotic youths in grades 6 12, why not encourage them to express themselves through writing and compete for cash prizes. Deadline for entering is October 31, 2018 so don t wait. For more information contact Edward Lapating at edlapating@gmail.com or Vernon DuMolt at vernon.dumolt@cox.net Vernon DuMolt From the Junior Vice Commander Thanks to the crew who passed out thousands of Buddy Poppies at the Air Show. I really appreciate the support of the District 1 Commander, District 1 Aux President and comrades from the Mission Valley VFW Post at this event as well. We had a great time at the Air Show! Leroy, Bill K & Ed. We will be distributing poppies again at the Navy/Notre Dame game on 27 October, at Poway Veterans Park on 11 November and again at Walmart on 12 November. Volunteers are needed for all these event please contact me if you can help out. Remember all the proceeds from the Buddy Poppy sales go to build up our relief fund to give away to needy veterans. Thanks for all your support. Bill Kimble The Patriot October

3 From the Surgeon Comrades, I would like to bring attention to the La Jolla VA Hospital visit later this month on Sat, 27 Oct. Just a few hours of your day supporting this worthwhile event can truly make a difference to Vets who are having to spend any significant time at the hospital. The VA is limiting the number of volunteers they ll allow at one time, but it would be fantastic to reach that number! If you are unable to attend, please consider donating needed items. Special thanks to the VFW Auxiliary for this event! There are flyers around the Post with more information. Movie quote of the month (free beverage of choice to the first person that corners me at the Post with the movie title of origin): Chad Axel Foley chad.g.foley@gmail.com From the Chaplain Gracious good day, comrades. Brilliant. So now we got a huge guy theory, and a serial crusher theory. Top notch. GEAUX SAINTS!! (also hint, hint) Most people have probably been taught that anger is something we should avoid at all costs and that to succumb to angry feelings against another is always an evil thing. Surprisingly, Holy Scripture teaches us otherwise. While anger is certainly not among the commendable virtues, it is nevertheless a reality of the human condition. The sin is not in the anger. On the contrary, the sin is in holding the grudge. Psalms, chapter 30, verses five and six: Sing praise to the Lord, you faithful; give thanks to His holy memory. For His anger lasts but a moment; His favor a lifetime. Saint Paul wrote this powerful admonition in his letter to the Ephesians, chapter four, verse 26: Be angry, but do not sin, do not let the sun set on your anger. Powerful words indeed. It is OK for us to be momentarily angry with one another. We just have to let it all go before our heads hit the pillow. In comradeship, Barry Cronin From the Judge Advocate Comrades, Happy Fall. The Post has a few activities planned for this month including a bus trip to Sycuan Casino on 13 October. We will be celebrating the Post s 61 st Anniversary on 12 October during the Burger Burn. Finally, we will be having a great tailgate party at SDCCU Stadium for the Navy vs. Notre Dame football game on 27 October. So come on out and support your Post and enjoy getting together with your comrades. Bob Parks Bravo Zulu of the Month The Post is very pleased to recognize the fantastic work of The Patriot s editor and designer extraordinaire, Sara Salazar. Her work each month in creating a fantastic and informational product helps ensure all members are spun up on the latest happenings at the Post as well as providing useful and relevant knowledge. Thanks for all you do, Sara! From the Quartermaster Beta testing of Quickbooks is going well. I m preparing the first quarterly financial report using this tool. We have installed a new faster WiFi modem so your internet experience at the Post will be lightning fast. Also Lotto sales are up. Alan Helton From the House Committee Chairman Dear friends and family: I would like to provide an update of recent activity and improvements that we have been working on for our post. Renovation of the Quartermaster s office is now complete and Alan is ready to move in. Jason did an outstanding job with the renovation and we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks. Please drop by to say hi to Alan and admire the new digs. We would like to remind everyone that we need volunteers for working parties every Saturday at 9:00 am. A little work followed by a beer or two is good for the soul. If you need a list of projects that need to be completed, please feel free to contact me. After a lot of hard work by Alan Donovan, the new Point of Sale system is almost complete. The system will provide numerous benefits, including improved budgeting, reduced costs, and increased efficiency. We ll continue to provide updates on the project, but we are almost at the finish line. We would also like to thank Melissa Law for completing an intensive cleaning and sanitization of the post kitchen. Please remember to clean as you go, and help keep the kitchen up to military standards. Don t forget to join us for football on Sundays and Thursdays, and as always: Thank you for your service! 5 From the Service Officer Comrades, Unfortunately I am assisting an ever growing number of your requests for Pensions (Aid and Attendence) in support of the Veteran or his/her surviving spouse. Often it is due to Alzheimer s, Dementia or crippling ailments. This of course leads to the need of Fiduciary requirements. Thus I want to direct attention, for those of you that are affected, to the newest ruling concerning Fiduciary. The VA recently updated its regulations related to how it governs the oversight of beneficiaries, who, because of injury, disease, or age, are unable to manage their VA benefits, and therefore has to appoint an oversight/fiduciaries to manage their vulnerable affairs including their VA Benefits. Managed by VA s Veterans Benefits Administration, the new regulations, which took effect in August, update and reorganize fiduciary rules consistent with current law and VA policies, and clarify the rights of beneficiaries and the roles of VA and fiduciaries in the program. These new regulations clarify the protections in place for Veterans and family members who apply for or are currently part of our fiduciary care program. Among other things, the new regulations clarify beneficiaries rights, including the right to appeal fiduciary appointments and other fiduciary decisions, the 4 percent limit on fiduciary fees, and the procedures to remove a fiduciary, for instance, when a beneficiary demonstrates the ability to manage their own funds or when VA determines that the fiduciary misused VA benefits. For those of you who are Fiduciary for your Veteran or Surviving Spouse please go to: documents/2018/07/13/ /fiduciary-activities and make darn sure you re up to date on this program The Good Deals For those of you currently serving, did you know: Purple Heart Recipients Exempt from Some GI Bill Transfer of Benefit Limitations. The Department of Defense recently issued a memorandum (DTM ) to provide an exception to Post-911 GI Bill policy for active duty Purple Heart recipients. This will allow you to transfer your education benefits without requiring four more years of service. VA Home Loan For you folks looking to jump into the CA real estate market; VA loans are a great way to utilize the VA s benefits for eligible active duty military and Veterans. When looking to purchase your dream home, consider these benefits listed below: No Private Mortgage Insurance - You don t have to pay for Private Mortgage Insurance! The main characteristic of the Veteran home loan program includes the mortgage being insured by the federal government. Lower Costs - The VA prohibits some lender costs! Veterans financing homes via the VA possess the flexibility to negotiate expenses right with lenders. The VA home loan program or the participating lenders don t set interest rates, the quantity of closing costs or additional charges. Thus, veterans will be free to research the closing costs, rates, and mortgage terms provided by additional lenders. But, the VA limits the closing costs that lenders charge veterans. For instance, the VA will prohibit lenders from charging veterans for lawyer s charges, brokerage charges, or inspection charges upon new construction. The VA is very flexible - The VA permits veterans to buy various properties via an array of financing choices. For instance, Veterans purchasing a house which requires energy-efficient improvements might raise the quantity of the Veterans mortgage loan by a max of $6,000 if a veteran expects to save cash on utilities by putting in energy-efficient improvements like cooling and heating systems, solar energy insulation or systems, and weather-proofing. Refinancing Options Available - The VA permits Interest Rate Reduction Refinancing Loans! The VA Home Loan offers $0 Down up to $453,100 with no PMI. If you re a qualified active duty member lenders can count your BAH as income. As always, I stand by to serve you. Bud Lichtenstern Significant Donor Appreciation Special thanks to the all the organizations that gave or raised significant donations for our Solar Fund: Atlas Crane Service, Inc.
