Sailors at Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (FRCSE) Detachment (DET) Mayport took time off from their busy aircraft maintenance duties to enjoy some fun in the sun with their families at the Summer Bash picnic July 5. More than 190 Sailors and family members enjoyed a day in the park eating barbecue, playing games and listening to music at Sea Otter Pavilion on Naval Station (NS) Mayport. The command s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) committee coordinated the annual event designed to bring families together and enhance camaraderie. Activities included the corn bag toss and sports, such as basketball and volleyball. Children enjoyed jumping in the bounce house and playing on the water slide. Everyone was entertained watching Sailors take a dip in the dunk tank. At the picnic, Cmdr. (Sel) Michael Barriere, the unit s officer in charge, took the opportunity to praise the Sailors and Page 1 of 5

He reminded everyone of what the command s goal was for the upcoming holiday weekend. We work hard, and today we play hard, he said. Our goal for this 4th of July weekend is to use ORM (Operational Risk Management) and have everyone back to work safely on Monday morning. Barrier also thanked the MWR Committee and the First Class and Second Class Petty Officers associations for putting the event together. Chief Aviation Electronics Technician (AT) Luz Silva, the command s MWR committee coordinator, and her successor, Chief Aviation Machinist s Mate Carlos Rodriguezrodriguez credited their team of outstanding Sailors whose skillful planning made the picnic a great success. The team prepared hundreds of hot dogs, hamburgers, side dishes and garnishes. Silva also thanked the MWR assistant coordinator, AT1 Paul Mowry for his part in coordinating the dunk tank, a real crowd pleaser. Barrier, along with Command Master Chief Leonard Gage and Maintenance Master Chief Kevin Holden, the senior enlisted advisor, raffled off several summer prizes. Rita Hammerstad, NS Mayport s MWR coordinator, presented the Captain s Cup Soccer trophy for the second consecutive year to FRCSE Det Mayport s soccer team captain, ATAN Darnell Langston.
