1 LAKE-SUMTER CHAPTER OF THE The Lake-Sumter Gazette Editor: Bob Beightol From the President s Desk by Ralph D. Nelson, Jr., March, 2016 Somewhere Behind the Scenes Sometimes your dues money and member time is spent without being noted in our monthly meeting or newsletter. It is buried in the details of the Annual Budget and Treasurer's Reports, but not very visible to members. Below we lift the curtain on some of these significant, but often unheralded, actions. Read it and be proud! Who knows or appreciates the many hours that our Registrar, John Moore, spends with prospects, sometimes working for days to find and document the lineage of a patriot only to have the prospect decide not to join. The reward for helping those who do join is developing a new friend who appreciates your genealogical skills. We should have John give us a talk on how he breaks brick walls in genealogy. Our budget includes a $250 donation to the Boy Scouts of America. It also includes money for certificates and a cash prize and medal for the chapter winner of the Eagle Scout Scholarship competition. Our Eagle

2 2 Scout chair, Bill Hayes, has over fifty years of service to Scouting and leads our program for personally presenting recognition certificates to each new Eagle at his troop awards ceremony. We try to get photos of the presentations for our newsletter, but the $250 check may be sent in without notice in our minutes or newsletter. That particular check was recently sent in and will help maintain safe, clean, and fun camps for the Scouts in the Lake District of the Central Florida Council. We should publish an article on how our donations help the Scout program. At every Florida Society Board and Annual meeting (three per year, total) the Lake Sumter chapter has provided a ($50 value) basket for re-sale or the equivalent as a check. This is generally done without notice in our minutes or newsletter, but it provides the FLSSAR Ladies Auxiliary with income that they use to supplement significantly the state awards to winners of the youth contests. We should post a photo and note about a Ladies Auxiliary' award presentation that involves our donation. Our chapter has a small Speakers Bureau of members who give talks or provide service to other historical, lineage, and genealogical organizations. Several members are now listed on our chapter's web page through a new link called "Guest Speakers List". We need to expand that. And let's remember to get a photo and to write a brief summary of our service. Examples are State Registrar for the S of R, website manager for a national historic trail organization, speaker at a DAR meeting, visiting a grade-school class, etc. We are blessed to have a meeting place that is spacious, designed for meetings, provides for a good and inexpensive lunch, and has friendly faces to greet us each month. We make periodic donations to Post 219 in gratitude for allowing us to use the hall. This helps support their many outreach programs to veterans nearby. We ought to have a newsletter article about our hosts and their programs. As you can see, our time and money support a wide range of productive activities. Our members and others who read our newsletter should be made aware of these actions. Let's take the time to write something up and share the joy of service.

If you aren t registered on either, send the information of our Chapter Secretary Ed Riley, at apej2313@yahoo.com. He can then update the appropriate data base. Ft Mason, FL and the Ocklawaha DAR: During the period of 1821 thru 1845 the First and Second Seminole Indian Wars were fought in the Florida Territory. To that end, a series of logged encampments were constructed to provide a place of rest, security and resupply for soldiers. One of these encampments was named Fort Mason and was located near Umatilla, FL. In 1934, the Ocklawaha DAR Chapter dedicated a bronze historic marker, mounted on coquina rock, at the site of the old fort. Sometime in the 1960 s during widening of Hwy 441, the historic maker disappeared. Early in 2016, the marker, less the coquina rock, was found buried on private property in Sorrento, FL, and ultimately returned to the Ocklawaha DAR. Research regarding the marker is ongoing; however, the marker will be on display at this Saturday s 100 th Anniversary celebration at the Osprey Lodge, Eustis, FL.
