5 LTJG Alcides Sanchez ABH1 (AW/SW) Joseph Loera FROM THE ABMA PRESIDENT Aviation Boatswain s Mates are assigned to critical, mission essential tasking around the world each day. I would like to recognize the continued dedication of each sailor and their families while additionally providing a few thoughts on how we can strengthen our role of support as an association. Leading Forward - Congratulations to our newly selected FY19 LDO/CWO selectees! With each career promotion, an increased level of responsibility and authority is vested in each individual. Transformational leadership, involving elements of moral responsibility and identity-based motivation, can be matured by your initiative to take on leadership roles at every opportunity. Each year, nomination for leadership positions open within our local and national ABMA chapters. I ask each of you to consider sharing your valuable experience whether it be the important step of strengthening our association by initial or renewal of association membership, or accepting nomination as a candidate for election to a vital position. Innovation New ideas, products, or processes are examples of innovation. How we articulate our needs as a community and add valued input to suppliers is key to success. One of our most valuable resources within the ABMA is the opportunity to have face-to-face interaction with our vendor sponsors at the annual professional working group. Each of our vendors provides a valuable resource of support and information regarding upgrades in their designated specialties. Additionally, they get to hear feedback and resource requirements directly from the customer. This interaction between vendor and customer ensures they know what we need and that it makes sense. We greatly appreciate their time and attendance at these events. Continuous Process Improvement Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) Strategic Goals are directly aligned with those of the DoD, CNO, USMC, NAE, and NAVAIR. These goals are focused on improving current readiness, future capability, and personnel requirements. With the advance of mechanical media communication capability (social media, ) and physical media (in person, video teleconference), there is increased capability to improve. The TYCOM ABMA Agenda Item process affords each of us from the newest Airman to the most senior active duty or retired AB, ability to provide valued recommendations that may improve safety, work efficiency or quality of life. The key to a successful agenda item process is to achieve the goals of all stakeholders while establishing better acquisition practices and incorporating an enterprise culture concentrated on identifying potential gaps in areas such as; technological superiority, human interface requirements, software based design 5

6 infrastructure, cyber vulnerabilities, logistical superiority, metrics accumulation, maintenance history documentation and distribution of organizational talent. As we continue preparations for the 47 th annual ABMA Professional Working Group in San Diego, I look forward to working with each of you with a stated goal of listening to and sharing each other s comprehensive experience while providing the AB community with an improved level of preparedness to safely take on future missions. 10 GULF COAST CHAPTER-PENSACOLA, FLORIDA Greetings Fellow AB s, The Gulf Coast ABMA Chapter has done a lot of great work and organized numerous projects for AB s in Pensacola Florida. We are also proud of the commands and Sailors in our local area of their accomplishments and would like to take the opportunity to recognize them. ABE1 Shannon at NATTC Pensacola is a Margaret Flowers recipient for community service for Pensacola. ABH2 Huoy won NATTC Instructor of the Quarter for 1 st QTR FY18. ABFCS Robert Statam was selected as CWO2 Aviation Boatswains Mate. Our newly elected Officers for Gulf Coast ABMA Chapter includes: o President ABH1 Roderick o Vice President ABH1 Kirby o Treasurer ABE1 Compton o Secretary ABHC Santos o Board of Director 1 Year ABECS(retired) Rick Kiesau o Board of Director 2 Year ABFCS (retired) Damien Lazarus Please take the time out to congratulate these AB s for their outstanding work! The Chapter would like to bid farewell to CDR Lawrence who was the Air Boss at NATTC Pensacola schoolhouse from December 2014 to February Thank you CDR Lawrence! As we bid farewell to our old Air Boss we also would like to welcome aboard our new Air Boss, LCDR Stanley. As the Navy moves forward with Sailor 2025 Initiatives, the commands in Pensacola has been working diligently with ensuring that AB Sailors are prepared and successful in their career paths. Below are some of the great work that has been occurring here in the local area that plays a big impact in the fleet for AB s. NATTC Pensacola: The 89-military staff assigned to the AB school house continues to train ABs and APACT Sailors to meet the needs of the fleet. Please check out their Facebook page NATTC Air Department to see all of the new AB s graduating from the schoolhouse. (NAC) Navy Advancement Center: At the Navy Advancement Center, several working groups are driving to meet CNO s initiatives that will change the Sailors advancement exams in the future. Starting in 2019 PMK questions will be removed from the 175 advancement examination and will transition into a 100 PMK electronic examination. Sailors will have the capability of logging into the system with their 10

11 military ID in which an examination will be generated to determine eligibility of advancement. The occupational portion of the advancement exam will still be distributed thru paper exam and will currently remain the same. Another change that is being worked on is the new Electronic Worksheet that will generate points for each factor of the Sailors Final Multiple Score. Ultimately Sailors will be responsible for ensuring that their electronic records (NSIPS, ESR, NDAWS, etc.) are up to date to meet eligibility and advancement opportunities. In January 2018, NAC has been working with TYCOM in selecting Fleet Subject Matter Experts, Chief Petty Officers (E7-E9), to attend our yearly Advancement Examination Readiness Reviews. Nomination packages will need to be submitted to TYCOM and those who are selected, Navy Advancement Center will pay for all expenses (travel, vehicle, lodging, and food). For further information regarding advancement exams and AERR s please check out the Navy Advancement Center link on My Navy Portal or our Facebook page. CNATT: Last year a working group of Subject Matter Experts in the ABE community along with Carley Corporation began on a new C School curriculum for the Arresting Gear ARC System. The awesome work continues to ensure that excellent training are provided to our fleet Sailors. Finally, we would like to remind everyone that the Gulf Coast ABMA Chapter will be hosting the 2018 Spring Jam on April at Blue Angel Recreational Park, 2100 Bronson Road, Pensacola, FL We have a lot of activities planned for the 3-day event so check out our attached flier or Facebook page (ABMA Gulf Coast Chapter) for updates and information. For reservation and park information check out the webpage or contact the Navy Gateway at Hope to see you there! ABH1 Roderick Gulf Coast ABMA Chapter President 11

25 The Evening Prayer I am convinced, Our Father, that your fondest feelings are reserved for the least pretentious and most genuine of us. I am sure that Aviation Boatswain s Mates are some of your favorites. Certainly Aviation Boatswain s Mates have yet to find the virtues of humility, or softspokenness or gentleness They do lead with their jaws. And they always seem to be more ready to fight than to switch. They can be singled out by their red eyes, and by a grubbiness which is a mark of their trade. But their wills match their strong backs... And their love of each other is a wondrous thing to behold. They are the salt of the deck And the saltiness is honest and open And they are uniquely Your sons & daughters. We are grateful for them As you love them specially, we mark them particularly tonight. Bless them every one And forever keep them from harm and hurt In Christ s name, Amen. R. W. Bedingfield, Chaplain (USN) Modified by Stoney Burke July 1,
