1 United Nations Mine Action Office (UNMAO) Weekly Sitrep: Ref # 31 (29 July 4 August 2007) 1. Highlights Kadugli: On 2 August, four of the Pakistani Military Demining Company s (PMDC s) Mine Detection Dogs (MDDs) were accredited as Explosive Detection Dogs (EDDs), to work at security gates in UN compounds in Sudan. Also in Kadugli, DCA s Explosive Ordnance (EOD) Team 2 completed bunker clearance at Katcha. Yei: NPA completed Battle Area Clearance (BAC) at Mundri. 2. Security Yei: The Tore area in Central Equatoria has been reduced to Level 2 as of 1 August, following a reassessment by UNDSS. 3. Recent Mine/UXO Accidents/Incidents NSTR 4. Programme Mine Action Portfolio submissions, UNMAS Portfolio Projects and EC proposal ongoing. 5. Operations/Khartoum (Operations/Quality Assurance/Plans) Plans NSTR SSO Demining Updated Force Headquarters on the progress of demining and related issues. Medical Liaised with private par tners in Juba regarding access to AME.
2 Updated summarized medic s accreditation result in preparation for the forthcoming accreditation/qa database. Update ongoing of the Sudan Mine Action Medical Evacuation Plan and medical IMSMA forms. Attended joint HIV/AIDS UNCT Coordination Meeting. Reviewed UNMAO treatment protocols and CASEVAC plans for the northern region. 6. Operations/Field Assessment trips: Malakal: An assessment trip to Pultruk was conducted by the Cambodian Military Demining Company s (CMDC s) survey team, in conjunction with scheduled UNMO patrol to the area. UNMIS related issues: NSTR Mine action coordination El Fasher : Further discussions conducted with AMIS regarding e xplosive storage space on AMIS property. AMIS has agreed in principal to allow WRMAO space to build an explosive storag e facility within their main camp at ZamZam, situated 4 kilometres south of El Fasher. WRMAO will supply the storage container and pay all costs involved ; AMIS to provide 24-hour security. 7. Status of CPA Implementation (in relation to Mine Action) NSTR 8. Progress of UNMIS Priorities Kadugli: Task dossiers ready to be issued upon the arrival of the new contractor. 2
3 Damazine: Mine clearance operations in Kurmuk along the Ethiopian border have been suspended until the arrival of the new contractor. Juba: MAG Clearance of Customs Market: To continue with the destruction of the removed UXO at a temporary Central Demolition Site (CDS) at a later date. FSD FSD LoD 1: C learance of one DA east of Anyidi Airstrip. Task Dossier issued, work suspended due to weather constraints. QA handover attempted, however road impassable at this time. Progress of TCC demining Sector I: Juba The Bangladeshi Military Demining Company (BMDC) is tasked to clear the Rajaf minefield and its Mine Detection Dog (MDD) team to clear access lanes around its perimeter. A new Task Dossier will be issued shortly for the clearance of an area of land close to the River Nile, prior to the sinking of water boreholes. One of the BMDC s explosive ordnance (EOD) team s continued with clearance of the Central Demolition Site (CDS) near Juba - containing numerous UXO in various conditions - while their second EOD team completed clearance of a UXO Dangerous Area (DA) at the Ministry of Animal Resources an d Fisheries Dairy and Poultry Farm. Sector II: Wau The Kenyan Military Demining Company (KMDC) continued with work on their new tasks (SS 447) seven technical survey tasks within SS-1275, the technical survey of a suspected Dangerous Area (DA) near Busseri Bridge. Sector III: Malakal The Cambodian Military Demining Company s survey platoon conducted a General Mine Action Assessment (GMAA) of Phom el Seraf on 3 August. Sector IV: Kadugli The Egyptian Military Demining Company s (E MDC s) teams worked on clearance of Andullo m inefield near Um Serdiba, while their EOD team worked on spot tasks in the Kadugli locality. Secto r V: Damazine. Mine clearance operations resumed in Kurmuk A minefield along the Ethiopian border with the newly accredited incoming demining teams of the Pakistani Military Demining Company (PMDC). 10. Progress of other UN-funded mine action projects Kassala: FSD - All teams demobilized. Juba: ArmorGroup MCT 1: Technical Survey (TS) of m inefield at New Asiro. Task Dossier issued, work planned. 5

7 SAC/MAG Landmine Impact Survey (LIS) Central Equatoria: the recruitment process for Central Equatoria is underway. Wau: SAC/MAG LIS - Western Bahr El Ghazal, Lakes and Warrap: for Western Bahr El Ghazal, survey is ongoing; awaiting deployment plan for Warrap and Lakes. El Fasher: Preparation of Task Dossiers for the incoming contractor ongoing to date, four Task D ossiers relating to the clearance of open DAs have been prepared for North Darfur and four for the technical survey of suspected minefields in South Darfur. 11. Progress of non-un funded mine action projects Kadugli: DCA Conducting operations in South Kordofan: EOD Team 1: o n scheduled stand down from 25 Jul to 14 Aug. EOD Team 2 (SKILLS): completed bunker clearance at Katcha village (and destroyed 29 x 82 mm mortars, 19 x 60 mm mortars, 38 x mortar fuses and 7 x RPG propellants. New task to be issued on 5 August.. Damazine: MAG MCT/DfiD: Mine cl earance operations in Kurmuk task suspended - report not received. MCT/Consortium: Mi ne clearance operations in Kurmuk task suspended - report not received. Total number of beneficiaries: 1,753 people; DCA Team 3 (SKILLS Consortium) conducted MRE safety briefing at Kadugli bus station and supported their EOD team in the villages of Daloka and Katcha. Total number of beneficiaries: 108 peopl e AAR/FPDO: The team operating in Kadugli locality conducted MRE community presentations in the villages of Belinga, Tuku, Al Sarf, and Katcha, in addition to a meeting with community leaders in Tuku. Total number of beneficiaries: 368 people. FPDO Team 02 F conducted community MRE in the locality of Kassala, covering the villages of Glad and Tshotyay. Total number of beneficiaries: 986 people; Team 03F conducted community MRE in the locality of Kassala, targeting khalwas and basic schools in the village of Wad Sharifay. Total number of beneficiaries: 1,565 people. JASMAR teams continued their work in Kosti, while MAG and DCA teams operated in Blue Nile. MRE Teacher Training was coordinated through a meeting held with the Ministry of Education and UNICEF. The training targets approximately 800 teachers from all Kassala localities and is to commence on 8 August, in six training centres at different localities. 9
10 South: MRE/VA Assistant travelled to Malakal from 31 July to 3 August to monitor Handicap Inter national s MRE activities. Also provided one-day training on the use of the Life Skills Modules and conducted one QA visit in the field. Minutes from last MRE WG meeting have been distributed. Twenty MRE/CL teams are conducting MRE activities in the south at present, while five teams are on stand down during the rainy season. Handicap International is conducting regular MRE activities in Malakal. MAG MRE teams have been working in Wau and Juba. 4,396 people received MRE this week, in accordance to reports received from MRE partners in the South. LSP LSP induction briefing given to 59 new UNMIS staff members and 18 NGO staff in Khartoum. LSP training conducted for 22 incoming members of the Bangladeshi Contingent. LSP Trainer travelled to Malakal on 31 July to monitor an UNMIS LSP trainer trained by UNMAO; also conducted an LSP briefing for the HI teams in Malakal on 2 August. 15. Victim Assistance (VA) HSTF Project - Needs assessment: data entry and verification ongoing for ISCO, while SEM completed its part. Socio economic reintegration activities: preparation of documents for the CAP meeting on 7 August. National VA Workplan: Organization of the workshop is ongoing and meeting held with the Federal Ministry of H ealth for feedback on the document. Selection of Candidates for the TATCOT one-year wheelchair course. Candidate selected from Juba. Preparation/collection of proposals for the Mine Action Portfolio.
