CYBER PATRIOT A COMPETITION A most exciting and innovative program in AFA history is in its third year. It is the premier national high school cyber security competition.

In this 2010-2011 Cyber Patriot III, the competition has been expanded from high school Air Force JROTC units by accepting JROTC units of any Service (AF, Army, USMC, US Navy, and CAP).

There are several items to download and read - a cyber primer, a check list, a fact sheet, talking points, a draft media release, and a PowerPoint presentation on the overall program.

3 CYBER PATRIOT A COMPETITION A most exciting and innovative program in AFA history is in its third year. It is the premier national high school cyber security competition. Last year's competition demonstrated that we could effectively extend the competition to a large number of teams participating from as far away as Alaska, Hawaii, and Japan. In this Cyber Patriot III, the competition has been expanded from high school Air Force JROTC units by accepting JROTC units of any Service (AF, Army, USMC, US Navy, and CAP). JROTC and Chief Campos' outreach Kenneth Wofford ( ) Kenneth Wofford, Col USAF (Ret), a Tuskegee Airman, passed away Sept 5. He was 87. He was a member of the Gen. E.W. Rawlings Chapter of the Air Force Association and strongly supported and guided the Aerospace Education's Vision of Exploration program. He was a great Airman, Educator, Citizen and always a Gentleman. He had approximately 6,000 hours of total flying time. He received the Congressional Gold Medal from President Bush in And in 1999 was inducted into the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame. His commitment to volunteering was at the forfront of his tireless efforts. For years, he spoke to many, especially to students, introducing them to aviation. He always refused any honorarium, insisting instead that any money due him be sent to Redtail.org to support the P-51 Mustang project. Memorial services were held on Oct. 10, and again on Oct. 11 at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery. He will be missed. (edited from the AFSSC and MCMOAA rememberance notes) This past August the Air Force Junior ROTC Units at Park High School in Cottage Grove, and Woodbury High School, in Woodbury merged classes and offered a brief 2 week course in Survival for 29 cadets. The main intent of the course was for the cadets to be able to handle different types of situations that they could possibly be involved in or exposed to, such as a car accident, hunter falling out of a tree, getting lost in the woods, what type of plants are edible, how to build a fire, how to build a shelter and first aid. MSgt Vaughn Hanson, SRA Elizabeth Hanson, A1C Stephanie Hayne and MSgt Rob Buresh of the 109th Aero Medical Squadron from Minnesota Air National Guard, assisted with the Medical Training. SSgt Ryan Anderhold and Amn Nicholas Strand also provided excellent insight and exposure to aircrew life support emergency equipment. 4 Military ID Card (Retiree) Update 02: Under a new initiative customers can schedule an individual appointment and circumvent the waiting line. Walk-in customers at ID card facilities can experience wait times of two hours or more during periods of peak demand. Under this new initiative, civil servants and contractors are now filling customer service roles previously handled by active-duty personnel at Personnel Support Detachments (PSD) and Customer Service Detachment (CSD) Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and Real- Time Automated Personnel Identification System (RAPIDS) sites throughout the United States, Hawaii and Guam. An emphasis on prompt service and customer satisfaction is the focus of this new initiative. The vast majority of patrons who arrive at a scheduled appointment with proper documentation are in and out in less than 20 minutes. Making an appointment is fast and easy via the online appointment scheduler located at: Having all the necessary documents is key to a successful visit to the ID card office. At a minimum, a valid state or federal government issued picture ID is required and additional documents are often necessary to fulfill certain requests. A listing of required documents can be found on the appointment scheduler website or by calling the local office for clarification. Local office phone numbers are listed on the scheduler website. Customer service hours are between 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. except the Navy Exchanges in Norfolk, Va., and Oak Harbor, Wash., which are open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Patuxent River, Md., Pass & ID with operations between 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weekend hours vary by location. 5 Note that you can get Rawlings Chapter meeting notes online at Minnesota Civil Air Patrol June and July are big months for cadets with the annual encampment at Camp Ripley and the annual Flight Academy in Mankato. The Encampment consisted of 86 Basic Cadets, 17 Staff Development Squadron Cadets, and 28 Cadet Staff members. Nearly 30 senior officers and volunteers were also there. Cadets and staff from Missouri, North Dakota, as well as a dozen from Iowa, participated in the event. Second Lieutenant Carol Hinkle, from the Burlington, IA's Composite Squadron, said Minnesota has a wellearned reputation as one of the best run encampments in the nation. The July flight academy drew 25 cadet pilots in training from Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Georgia and put them behind the controls of either a Super Planik L-23 glider or a Cessna 172 aircraft. Nearly 30 Senior Officers supervised the activity. The Ground Training activity trained 90 officers and cadets in search and rescue operation. They had instruction on land navigation, tracking ELTs, conducting a line search working with search dogs and first aid training. Several days were spent in Camp Ripley's 53,000 acre reserve practicing the new skills under a variety of search and rescue scenarios. The Ground Team Academy is an intensive event designed to help prepare CAP members to deal mentally, physically, and technically for life threatening emergencies. In 2009, the MN Wing logged 75 actual or training missions totaling nearly 15,000 personnel hours, 469 sorties, 789 air hours and one save. Wreaths Across America Wreaths Across America places wreaths on the graves of fallen service men and women. They have mission and a service to provide wreaths at most all cemetaries. In addition, Wreaths Across America has a wide number of participants using this forum to raise money for their unit, or for donating money to a favorite charity. Last year, our University of Minnesota Air Force ROTC Detatchment 415, suggested the Rawlings Chapter members could buy wreaths that would be placed at the National Cemetary at Ft. Snelling. We have planned again to work with the Detachments at the Univ. of Minn. and St. Thomas. The cadets at both units want to have a program that gives them as much flexibility and options as possible in both contacting and meeting with Mentors. Having a one-to-one meeting isn't always feasible but they would like to have the option to scan the Mentor roster and contact more than one person. We also talked about having some sessions where Mentors from different career fields would hold a panel discussion, then break into small groups and have cadets be able to go from one table to another and ask questions and/or listen to the conversations with others. If any of you have ideas about how to improve the program, I'd appreciate an . If there are other officers and NCOs who are not on my mailing list that you think might be interested, have them me.
